Oh, yeah... I have another question. Is it normal for GS to make an imprint of your CC if you make a reservation by CC? I have -NEVER- had this happen before, and I feel really uncomfortable about it. If anyone could provide some feedback, that'd be terrific. TIA.
probably did that for cross-referencing purposes, in case they think someone is ordering 2 under different addresses, but using the same card.

I got the feeling that if the EB games only got 12 in, then they would call the 1st 12 pre-orders (in order) to pick up their PS3. They said that we had to pick it up by the end of the day or they would move on down their list.

everyone is like myself and only preordered $100 down on it. If sony releases news that bans the use of ebay for their systems, they'd be shooting themselves in the face because 3/4 of everyone who preordered would be going right back to EB/GS for refunds. This would be a horrible business move on Sony and Ebay, because face it...no one wants an overpriced crappy system, unless as others have pointed out they are rich or crazy.
Your logic makes absolutly no sense, and here is why:
You return the ps3.
Someone who actually WANTED one will buy it for the Retail price.
They then save all of the money that would have gone into your pocket.
They use that money to BUY MORE GAMES.
This may come as a personal attack, but come on... don't call people crazy when you clearly aren't all there.

Still waiting to see what they are going to do about this Power Seller:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170037994945&fromMakeTrack=true
Well, his listing was removed but he wasn't banned, nor was his Power Seller rating removed... HMMMM...

IMO, this is the auction to keep an eye on right now... this guy is a 1000+ power seller. If eBay pulls his listing and bans him, there is something seriously fucked up going on.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170037994945&fromMakeTrack=true
Well, it looks like the auction's been deleted, but so far nothing to his account.
Edit: Gah, too slow....
I don't like to cross paths with ebay. I once shillbidded (yes I know it's wrong). My gf bidded on my 360 to raise the price by 200.00. It worked and I sold it for 200.00 more at the last minute, but we were both banned for 30 days and my powerseller status was permanently removed. I don't need the powerseller thing anyways.
I wouldn't go around and admitting that. Shill bidding is not only against Ebay's policies it is a federal crime.
For everyone wondering about the Ebay presales they are breaking 2 Ebay rules. You can't put a preorder auction up untill 30 days before release (not ending 30 days prior) and you can't auction something that is not in your possession.

This should only happen if they can't read the card through the scanner thingy. In that case, they'll imprint your card and input all the info into the computer manually. Otherwise, there's no reason for this. I did this once when I worked at GS, and only because the card was old and it didn't read through the scanner.

Either way, I'm forced to get there super early or camp, which pisses me off.
LOL, I thought the whole point of the pre-order was so you didn't have to camp out.

Yeah, and this all stems from noone being able to tell exactly what the allocation from Sony will be... they might be short on production and fuck everyone over. My only consolation is that I have elminated my competition from walk-ins. Now I just have to worry about those few others that were able to pre-order. I really hope that fool employee didn't take more pre-orders than he was supposed to though... he didn't seem to really know what he was doing.

TIA.In the store I work at, sometimes the receipts just require a card imprint. If it's done manually, it is everytime; I think other times it's just random. It's all autmated basically, employees don't choose when to do imprints (unless they run it manually, OC).

go to the ebngames 48 hours after the ps3 is released, u may get one that the preorders didnt pick up
btw, do these preorders mean that i cant camp out at ebgames at launch anymore? ie will they any for walkin customers?

If you plan on selling on ebay be extremely cautious of chargebacks. Also If the ps3 has problems with the blueray, overheating etc. The buyer can complain to paypal and if they send it back to you, you will be required to give a refund.

I hope they just do what they did for the Xbox 360 and if they get less than they preorder those who got there preorders first get theirs. It's only fair that they do it that way. I want to be able to make other accomodations if my preorder doesn't work out at EB.

Wrong. People buying on eBay at launch will be protected by Sony's manufacturer's warranty. If their Bluerays fucks up or something dies, they have to take it up with Sony, not with the seller.

Thanks to those who provided feedback regarding the card imprint. It still makes me uncomfortable, but at least it seems legit. I just don't like the idea of my CC info being hardcopied and not in my possession.
It's weird that that one guy only had his listing removed but nothing else when all the others seemed to have their accounts suspended/banned.

I was about to say the same thing. It's an unopened item that is sealed new, and ownership transfers to the buyer. if the buyer has a problem with the item, they'd have to take it up with sony because you never used the item, you're just re-selling a new item.

I think those that got a pre-order in are fine. The pre-orders were based on the allotment given to them from the 400,000 figure.
However
If Sony comes out in Nov and says there's another problem, and only 300,000 will be available, all bets are off. But as of now, we should all be fine.

Yeah, both people in front of me and a couple others that came later were all vocal of their plans to put the system on eBay. Where are all the people that actually want a PS3?
Those people right now are driving their BMW or Mercedes Benz thinking about their next trip to Europe...

Maybe... That is assuming that all EB/Gamestops respected their pre-order limits (I don't think the guy at my store even had any kind of inkling as to what that limit was). If your store had a dumb employee or an overzealous manager taking pre-orders, the 400k figure goes to hell.
I guess it should also be mentioned that the employee at the Gamestop I went to only made a list of our names and what number we were after we pressed him about it... "I'll pass it on to my manager" is all he said... I'm so fucked!

BUT purposefully buying a limited supply product in order to rape potential buyers out of sheer greed is f'ed up... just my opinion. I don't look down on anyone trying to do it, but I certainly question their morality.
Oh, I do. And to whomever that pisses off...good. You and the hapless, spineless parents who try to buy their kids' love and their irredeemable brats all deserve each other. Oh, and the impatient-but-procrastinating hardcore types that just can't fucking wait one minute past Launch Day, let alone two or three months down the road.
P.S. And just how do such 'hardcore' gamers year after year not only miss preordering, but also show up two hours before store openings, expecting to score a system. Aren't gamers supposed to be inherently cerebral and Vulcan-like in their thinking? Well, we were in the '80s, anyway. Before GTA...before the dark times...before...The Mainstream.
EDIT: LOL, I thought the whole point of the pre-order was so you didn't have to camp out.
Well, for most people waiting for these preorders, the amount of time invested linesitting was a mere fraction of what it will be when the system actually launches. I could have shown up at my local Gamestop today after open and preordered one with no problem. Now, having said that, I would've shown up at least two hours early, based on what I was reading on the 'net, but the point is that the camping for this was not nearly as intense as this news dropped pretty late and the $100 deposit probably scared many away.

I got to my Gamestop at 7am and I was #1, by 7:20am I had to take a crap so I came back home and then rushed back to Gamestop to find out that now I was #2 in line. The third dude arrived at 8:30am and then the fourth one arrived at 9:55am. Fun times talking about games and college.
My wife went to another Gamestop at 9:30am and there was nobody in line so she was #1. 2 moms arrived after her and they bought ps3 for their kids (so the first 3 people in line were girls... how strange is that!:bouncy:)
So, I am set to have 2 ps3... I am expecting total profit of around $2K per console (considering that 360s were going for as much as $3200)...:D

You know what I don't get......I pre-warned EVERYONE I knew last night at midnight and at 7am that if they wanted to pre-order a PS3 and get one for little hassle on launch day that running down to their local EB/GAMESTOP an hour before it opened. And that AT BEST....each store would get 16 (8 of each type)
Now I'm getting numbnuts calling me at 5:30pm....asking "You think they have any pre-orders left??"
My response.... "You're an idiot"

Same thing with me I think... dunno if he wrote down the phone number, but whatever. The way the did it at the GS I went to was they gave 16 people a piece of paper that showed all the ps3 games available for preorder. That paper also had a number written down on it which was your prority/what place in line you were. The manager didn't guarantee that everybody would get a ps3, but he said that they should be getting 16.
They took down everybody's phone numbers and the two workers (who both camped out for ps3s) told us that they would hold a release party at midnight 11/17.

Yeah the EBgames manager did the same thing but without the numbers on the sheet of paper. They also mentioned the midnight release party too. I can't wait, the people in my line were really cool, it will be great to see them all again when we get our PS3's.

In Phx, I drove around last night to various stores to see what the line situation was and found 1 store with a guy out at 11pm 8-[. I then checked out a few more spots and didn't see a soul. When I woke up at 7am I chose to head out to one of the empty locations I scouted out the night before and luckily discovered I was the first one there. I went and got some breakfast and chilled in my car til the manager showed up around 8:30. A few peope started to arrive after that, so I got a lawn chair out of my trunk and posted up by the door. By 9am 7 people were waiting in line, but fortunately the manager decided to allow us in one at a time to pre order. I got the 60 gig version and Resistence. A lot of people seem to have eyes on ebay, but I'm going to keep mine. This is my first Sony console ever and I'm going to sit on it til it, inevitably, breaks a month later. Then I'll exchange it for a new one and start the process all over again. There were a few Gamecrazy workers there but they seemed to be the most uninformed bastards I have ever met. They were planning on getting MGS4 at launch and didn't have a clue what Motorstorm or Resistence was.
I'm glad that it was a school/work day for most people because if it was Saturday then I wouldn't have been so lucky. I'm a teacher and have the next two weeks off, so its been all kosher so far. I know not to count my eggs before they've hatched, so I'll be taking a wait and see approach on all this.

At my Gamestop, whatever spot you were in line is the spot you are for getting a PS3. The manager has the order of who was where, and said Nov 16 he'll be calling and telling the people in order they are on the list if they are getting one or not.
Also, he gave everyone the phone number for the person in charge of the PS3 systems/launch and told us to call him and tell him we were very happy with how pre-orders went so that he'll give our Gamestop all the consoles promised

Did anyone else's GS/EB ask them to sign a statement that said that they will not be guaranteed one at launch? At the GS I went to, they had everyone sign this before they preordered...I guess it's to save their asses in case they don't have enough for launch day?

I wouldn't doubt it. I went to four stores, and *just* got in for the fourth one (they were getting 16 in).
I find it funny how the article states that they sold much quicker than the 360. Duh. They were taking preorders all summer for it, and took at least twice as many more preorders than consoles they actually recieved. It's nice that they learned from their mistake and handled this one so well.

As I was first in line and paid in full........i inquired to the manager as to what the deal was and whether I had to arrive early before the 17th to guarantee my place......or needed a piece of paper.
His quote to me was : "You have one...guaranteed. You'll have 48 hours to pick it up after release".
Guess it helps to pay for it in full.

the store probably got 8 and they already took at the two employee systems, you'll be fine you might not get the exact one you want but you should get one.

No the two employee spots were already taken. That's why they only had 6 instead of 8.

Did anyone feel that this whole thing was handled with upstanding mediocrity?
When the employees arrived @ around 9:30 or so they knew how many preorders they had. Instead of simply going to the line and cutting it off they let people into the store making them wait an aditional 45 minutes for nothing. In addition they didn't have any signs in store stating how many preorders they were taking (which is probably why the guy in the front of the line got away with telling people there were only 7 preorders when there were really 8)
also I don't see why the didn't take a list of names for a 2ndary preorder list with no specified time that they would get the console. I'm sure that wouldve made a ton of people in line more happy than just sending them away after a few hours of waiting............

Does that mean the remaining 20,000 stores in the country are splitting 300k units? I just don't recall EB stores getting 2 or 3 times as many 360s as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc. Though I guess if they're only distributing to the major retailers this time through, that would be more understandable.
There are 3500+ Gamestop/EB stores, at 8 to 16 systems a piece, you end up with an allocation of 28,000 to 56,000. They will probably get double that by years end divided over weeks. If supply goes well, then all pre-purchasers will get one by Christmas.

sooo today my friend and I got to our local gamestop at 7 AM and found no one there, so we spent the next 2 hours waiting for anyone to show up while making runs to mcdonalds, target, walgreens...whatever we felt like doing while the other waited
almost right at 9:00, 3 people show up, and by 9:50 we've got a line of 20 people ranging from high school students enjoying a sleep-in half day (so convenient) and businessmen in full business attire....
I get up to the register after the manager gives us the "you aren't guaranteed a system at launch" speech, and I'm first in line so I'm thinking I've got it made
but of course the employees have the first 5 spots in line....I'm still 6th, but still, that's bull, they were only supposed to get 2 if I'm not mistaken

What happens long term though? The company sees pre-orders going for sell, what makes them not decide to just make it first come first serve on all new systems?

I can't wait to see the next episode of House Of Carters where Nick gets in a fight with Aaron over the last PS3 reserve at their local EB and then raps about it.

To people saying that pre-orders are never guaranteed, I was told by my local manager that they were told not to go over their specified unit allotment or there would be serious reprecussions. Such is why I believe that my store will actually get its 8 units.
So I stopped in this morning and preordered, #13 or so of 16.
I stopped in later to exchange a game (first time I don't inspect a disc, and sure enough, it looks like it spent it's previous life on the interstate), and recalled that they had a legal pad with PO names on it.
There's 16 names, but mine ain't one of 'em. I inquire. The manager clacks on the keyboard for a minute, then sez "seventeen. I just lost my job."
I *think* he was kidding, but he seemed deadly serious. At any rate, to shorten the story, he crossed the first name off the list (confirmed double-preorder at another store) and put mine on there. Evidently his DGM gave him the a-ok to do so.
I hope it works out for him. While I'm not responsible for the oversells (PO #17 was), the guy'sa genuinely good dude and has always been good to me. I'd hate to think overselling by one would cause such, er...massive damage.

Yeah, I haven't heard -anything- about that. Some guys who were standing in line with me at Gamestop told me they told their cousin who works at Best Buy to hold one for each of them, but apparently they're doing some kind of raffle thing? Idunno, it was kind of confusing, but it sounded LAME. Like they were going to hand you a ticket, and it would pretty much be random as to who would get to do it... I have NO idea. I'm probably talking gibberish. It was early.

lol Gamestop learned from the 360 mishap, yet Best Buy is determined to create the same exact scenario from last year. My BB did a raffle for the 360. It didn't matter if you were in line for 12 hours or 10 minutes, you got a ticket. Theoretically the last person in line could have walked with a system while the first person went home empty handed. Which may have happened, I know it came close...
Two of my friends were one of the last few people to show up and out of 100+(?) people in line, they BOTH ended up in the first 10 people in line after the raffle. They got really lucky.

just so you know those arent real SKU's. EBgames makes up thier own skus which makes life for me a big pain in the ass.
So what was the deal here:

I count at least 27 people in this line, with probably more in the back. What the hell were they thinking?
Anyway, not that anyone cares, but I got my one reserved - definitely didn't go for 2 though I probably could have (at a particularly isolated GS store). Not worth the risk.

LOL. Today I went to EB to pick up Tales of the Abyss and asked the manager how it went there. He said there were 40+ people in line and they had 16 preorders to go around.

As amazing as Resistance looks, I'd probably be crazy not to sell my PS3 when I get it if its going to sell for as much as people are speculating it will.
Knowing myself I might end up keeping it though :-P

I passed by that EB in the morning before I went to the one in the mall. The first eight had sleeping bags and there was even a tent. I think there was a lot of people because it's in Los Angeles. Bigger cities meant bigger crowds.

Yeah, but you'd think anyone that knew about this in advance (to camp out or get there at all before the store opened) would also know they would have no more than 16, and most likely even less than 16 - so being 25th in line is kind of pointless .

i would agree with you if I wasn't there. Must of the people there didn't find out through the internet, they were the ones who were called because they had PS3 preorders. One lady in line was quoting numbers, and saying theirs going to be 30 systems. I told here probably only fourteen because its 16 and 2 for the employees. She said no it's gonna be 30 I know i work for sony. (mind you she did because the sony studio isn't far away, but she's not from the video game department)

for those who actually got a preorder for a ps3,when your pick up the system on release day bring couple friends with you.I heard several employees discussing stories of people being robbed of ps2 and xbox 360 on release date

I see - well I hope the employees came out AS SOON as they got there and saw the line and dismissed anyone over the allocation number :D.

That's what they did at my Gamestop. The employee waiting before the store opened took everyone's name down, and as soon as the list was full anyone that came he told them they were too late.
