I don't know about this...I checked with the manager of a Gamestop earlier today and he said he didn't know when pre-orders start. He could be lying, but...who knows?

Little more info. PS3 preorder start tomorrow and you need to put $100 down. Wii POs start friday and will also need $100. First ome first served.

Anyone know about pre-orders online?
Regardless, I'm lucky I live on the West Coast. I have a few hours to confirm pre-orders before I trek to the mall.

I saw people camping out when I went to the mini mall to get some lemonade and a steak sandwich. I'll stop by a few EB's between my trouble call appointments.
There's too many of these "my friend's uncle's aunt's sister's wife's in-law's nephew heard it from his manager at EB in Kalamazoo" pre-order threads.
I hope some mod can lock these up and keep all the pre-order rumblings in one place.

I called a few local stores and they said they weren't allowed to share that information. I'm guessing it's confirmed and they don't want to cause a panic.
Just go to your local EB tomorrow morning at opening.

yikes at a 100! if they are certain and sure that you will get one at 100 down then im probably down for this
I was given the "we get to choose" (who gets preorders) line at my favorite EB a few days ago. Supposedly, I got chose :D, and they will call me when they are taking the preorders - no call yet.

I asked at EB at 10am this morning and they didn't know. They said they'd probably be getting from 2-6 PS3s through the end of the year, but since they didn't know the exact numbers yet, they couldn't do the preorders. Guess i'll call in the morning

I am so tired of all this. I bought into the hysteria last year with the 360, and it drove me nuts for a month. I'm not gonna bother with the PS3, even though there is money to be had.

I called a EB manager here in Austin and he says no on that, and he would tell me if it was confirmed but being kept secret. I guess it could be in select markets only, but that seems strange.

I called 5 (count em' 5!) Gamestops/EB's in my area and they stated to me PS3 preorders will start tomorrow BUT Wii will not be until betwen Wed-Fri (so no true date on that). So in PA it is confirmed that for $100 down you can get a PS3 if you are quick.

That's funny because the post right above yours (from someone in PA) contradicts that info :D.
Maybe it really is that the "store gets to decide" rumor is true and thus it will be different everywhere.

I think the most likely reason is that most of the people answering phones are the stereotypical ignorant employee, the same ones who don't know deals are extended, etc, etc. Or they're actually listening to corporate's dictum and not saying anything about it.

This may or may not be an official email:
"Attn Store Personnel:
On Tuesday, OCT. 10th 2006, you will begin taking reservations on the Sony PS3 under sku xxxxxx (Premium) and sku xxxxxx (Core). YOU MAY NOT BEGIN TAKING RESERVATIONS FOR THE PS3 PRIOR TO OCT 10th, 2006! Reservations are to be processed on a "first come-first served" basis for your customers. Under NO circumstances are reservation "places in line" to be held for customers. Our online reservation program will be activated at a future date: online reservations will be available as "bundle only".
No forced bundles or any other customer "requirements" are allowed (our online reservation policy may vary). Reservations will be limited to one system per household (customer is allowed to reserve one PS3 and one Wii, if desired).
As these systems are in short supply and high demand, all stores are being allocated on their reserve quantity. Stores are not allowed to reserve above their assigned reservation allocation for any reason.
Your assigned allocation for the PS3 is x units TOTAL between the 2 system choices. You are only allowed to reserve x units TOTAL of PS3. No more than 2 of these systems can be set aside to be purchased by store employees.

Just called 5 stores in Pittsburgh area, and here is what I got. Four said yes tomorrow at 10am $100 gets you a PS3 spot in line on launch day. One guy said I don't know but how about you call back tomorrow morning for more info on that, to which i responded "Do you really not know or are you not allowed to know" he laughed and said "The second one sir" and I said Thank you and hung up. So I would say this is pretty confirmed for PS3, but stores are not suppose to say due to not wanting to insight huge lines I guess. Let you guys know more as I know.

Email from GameStop.com:
GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store (http://clients.mapquest.com/eb/mqlocator?link=find&country=us&affid=3001) to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.
Our limited online pre-order program will be announced at a later date, after software and accessory availability dates are confirmed. Online product pricing and availability will vary and will be fulfilled independent of store reservations.I assume that what they're saying is they're allowing reservations for the allocation numbers they have right now, but those could change due to production issues, so theoretically they might end up getting less than that.

I think that memo is saying that employees aren't allowed to save a spot in line for people who haven't paid yet (i.e. friends that can't make it in first thing in the morning).
So you still get a place in line, they are just saying no "saving of places in line" and just first come first serve to get a place in line, and those that can't make it first thing in the morning are out of luck (which is the way it should be).

The EB I usually go to has their new releases by opening, 10 am, and I pick them up before I go to school.
Abnormally long lines and tons of phone calls means I can't get in and get out which will either a) make me late for school or b) I have to go out of my way after school to go to the mall to get the game.
Usually the store is dead at 10 am, I can get in and out and be done in 5 min, but if this is true there will probably be 4 people ahead of me preordering the PS3 while the one employee on duty figures out what the fuck to do while trying to answer the 1,000 phone calls at the same time, making me late to school.

Uh, yeah.... But I really wonder how many lines we'll see? Some places will probably be crazy, and others empty. Not everyone spends each day on the computer checking when preorders will start after all (unlike us CAGs :D). This is breaking late enough (as someone else pointed out) that it might not get around too much before the stores open.
Now, AFTER the stores open tomorrow and regular people start hearing about it first-hand (then reporting to their friends, etc), they will all be snapped up quick. But you *might* be OK showing up at 10am, at least in many places.

My local GS is only getting 4. I plan on getting there at about 7:45. If there is already people there, I'll head over to the EB a couple miles down the road. If no luck there, I'll just wait until launch eve and wait at Wal Mart.
Four? I wish you all the luck in the world, hopefully you'll be the first one in line.

ok so an EB games close to me already has at least 6 people waiting outside in their cars and the employee said they will have 10 pre orders. Also said they will open at 7am or 9am not 10am. So I guess I might just go now and start the waiting process. Fuck

Still, I'm not sure that I want to throw down $600 for this to sell it on ebay. Don't hate me, but I'm not gonna buy myself one of these until the price goes down. I would like to think that there could be some nice profit on ebay to be made, but how sure are we of that?
1. 500,000 or less at launch.
2. it's the playstation 3. take the 360 launch and multiply the hype.

My guess...they are lying to you. First of all the allotments are supposed to be either 8 or 16 per store. Secondly, the manager wouldn't want to open the store early (and pay salaries) for a few extra hours that won't generate any additional revenue. Its not like its Christmas or anything...

Yeah, hadn't thought of that (the salary thing) - plus it makes NO sense for them to open early as it will just confuse and piss people off (those who think they open at 10 as normal, anyway). Of course, if they have a crowd of 50 people out there at 7am they might want to open early just to get rid of them - especially if the store manager gets a call from the police :D.

Apparently, people are already lining up/waiting in cars outside of their GS/EB Games. That's insane, like you said, it's only for a pre-order.
I can't imagine how crazy it's going to be come launch day. There are going to be fucking riots.
"a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch"
Yeah, they are just covering their asses if Sony shorts them. I'm assuming they have preliminary numbers from Sony about how many they will get and they are basing this set of preorders on that number. If Sony sticks to it, everyone should be OK. However, we know there is a good chance that won't happen and it isn't under GS's control, so this is smart CYA language to throw in there so people don't get mad at them later.

shit...can't decide. do I wake up early and drive over, missing my spanish class?
I mean, this is a guaranteed free Wii or PS3 and games we are talking about, after ebaying the thing...
A preorder is not a guarantee... you'll have more luck camping outside Best Buy or Wal-Mart if you want to Ebay it. At least then you are guaranteed one.
Believe me, most EB's / GS's will get 2 at most and this whole xbox 360 fiasco will happen all over again.
They can say they are allotted 8 or 16 per store as much as they want but I will believe it when I see it.

Good luck to you all, hope everyone gets one to keep or resell if thats your plan! I'm officially out of the PS3 race before it starts. lol

VanillaGorilla
10-09-2006, 09:50 PM
Uh, yeah.... But I really wonder how many lines we'll see? Some places will probably be crazy, and others empty. Not everyone spends each day on the computer checking when preorders will start after all (unlike us CAGs :D). This is breaking late enough (as someone else pointed out) that it might not get around too much before the stores open.
Now, AFTER the stores open tomorrow and regular people start hearing about it first-hand (then reporting to their friends, etc), they will all be snapped up quick. But you *might* be OK showing up at 10am, at least in many places.
That is what I am thinking. If this news just came out tonight, and EB/GS clerks haven't been telling people in-store about it for days, then it might just fly under the radar. I live in an area that isn't exactly a video game hotbed, so I'm banking on getting there at about 7 a.m., and hopefully I'll be fine, since my GS of choice is only getting 4.

Possibly the stupidest park of the PS3 pre-order launch.
I'm sure you won't have any problem getting your $100 back either if you don't get a system.;)No, you probably won't. I took back $450 worth of deposits I had on the 360 at GameStop, and they gave them back to me, no questions asked.
So my question on this whole "1 per household" thing is this - and maybe PezRadar can answer. Will they cross-reference preorders at different stores and cancel anyone who has more than 1 order? Of course each store will only allow one per household - I'm talking about anyone lucky enough to get to 2 stores tomorrow, or if someone and their wife gets one, or whatever (that is NOT what I'm doing as my wife thinks the whole video game thing is crazy :D).
I might hit up 2 stores tomorrow, hoping the word hasn't gotten out too much. Now, chances are I won't get one at EITHER, but it is worth a shot. And I'm not necessarily trying to get 2 - but it would help to have resevations at more than one store given that we have a good chance of many of these preorders not being filled at launch!

Is it even worth the trouble of eBaying a PS3? What "precautions" could be taken for buyers who "never got the PS3." Insurance, delivery confirmation, only delivery with signature by receiver? Not that it matters if that is expensive as the buyer will front the shipping cost.

Fuck it, it's not even worth going through the trouble of finding a fucking needle in the haystack just to have my system a few months earlier than everyone else.
This is a pain in the ass, but MUCH better, as far as I'm concerned, than waiting overnight at a Best Buy/Circuit City/etc... At least with this I can go at 10am and have a decent chance of getting one. On launch day you'll need to be there 12-24 hours before, and I'm too old for that crap...
As for the precautions on ebaying a PS3 - well, I've never sold anything near that valuable, but I assume you'd have standard Seller protection via PayPal. You just make sure you send it with tracking info and insurance, and probably, in this case, signature required - then they can't pull anything on you. I *think* (and I could be wrong) that you would be covered, even if they said they got it but the box was empty or something. If that happens, ask them to help in filing the USPS insurance claim, as it *clearly* must have been stolen out of the mail - the fraud would be on them if they are lying.

Online product pricing and availability will vary and will be fulfilled independent of store reservations. http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/clear.gif FEATURED TITLES http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/clear.gif http://www.gamestop.com/gs/newsletter/combined/102x160/102x160_200180.jpg (http://www.gamestop.com/productmerch.asp?groupid=578&affid=3001&source=1010)

So even if you preorder there is a chnace you will get the shitty system equvilent to the 360 core system last year.

On the plus side this means I can skip my lit class tomorrow. I think I'll leave in a few hours to see if I need to camp it out tonight, if not I'll just wake up early so I can arrive a few hours early.
The ps3 actually kind of makes sense to me since I just got a 1080p tv and I don't own a ps2, so I'm getting a ps2, 1080p for some games and for movies, and it's a 100 cheaper than buying a 360 and HDDVD. I'm actually not sure if I'll keep it though. I want to, but I'm really going back and forth on this since I was planning on getting a Wii instead. I could sell the ps3 to get a Wii, but that just feels wrong. Meh, I'll probably keep the ps3 and get a Wii early next year when I have the cash.

I don't get it either. Pre-ordering is solely for those who do not wish to get in line for 24 hours. I only hope that it is only a "misinterpretation" from forums, and that if you pre-order 2nd in line, than a PS3 is guaranteed. It doesn't make sense if your the first to pre-order, but then you have to go back on launch day and wait in line to get your pre-order first.

If you are the 10th person on the preorder list, you are 10th in "line." So if they get 10 or more systems in on launch day you get them. If they only get 9 in, you don't get one but are the first to get called for the 2nd shipment when it arrives and are guaranteed one of those and so on.
Not sure how it will work with the $500 and $600 packs though. You might not be guaranteed which of those you get.

there should be different sku's to reserve the 20gb version or the 60gb version. just like when they held xb360 reserves you had the choice to reserve the core or the premium.
and dmall is correct as far as the "list" is set up. when you preorder a big ticket system it goes by who placed the order 1st. unlike when you preorder games there is no priority list since there is usually enough.

I was just curious as the blurb on gamespot said 8-16 per store (with employees getting no more than 2) but no mention of whether they new how many of the 20 and 60GB versions they'd be getting (among those 8-16).

its SUPPOSE to be one per household PERIOD. but then agian the only time ive seen anyone caught was @ the xb360 preorder where a customer had pre ordered 4 systems at diff GS stores and the District Manager caught on so he pulled all 4 reserves and gave the money back.
im sure theres ways around it if your really looking to reserve multiples. there going to take your name/addy/phone/ and method you have paid. im sure the reserves are going to be checked with all stores at one point since they are so limited.

In my area, all of the local stores pooled and compared their 360 pre-order lists together and any name/address that had more than one entry was bumped into last place... I only know cause I asked ;)

I don't understand this thinking. If you are 3rd on the pre-order list, you will get a PS3. I say 3rd because the first two slots at every store are going to be taken up by the employees. So there is no difference between being 1st in the line at Walmart and 1st in the line tomorrow at EB. You'll get a PS3 either way. Plus it is a lot warmer now than it will be Nov. 16th :applause:

Quick question because I'm too lazy to read the whole thread:
Does getting a preorder ensure your spot "in line?" I mean, if you're 5th on the preorder list and the store gets 5 units, does that mean for certain you will get yours at launch, or can the person who is 6th get it if they show up launch day before you?

I'd play it safe and camp out.
So if you're going to a store that is located inside a mall, would you just camp outside one of the mall entrances until the mall opens in the morning? And then once they open you'd have to get to the actual store, get in line again, and wait for the store to open... so that you can pay for a pre-order that doesn't necessarily guarantee that you will have a PS3 when the console is released in a little over a month.
I'm really just trying to talk myself out of doing this. So far, its working.

No, they don't and it's a major problem.
I worked as an ASM for EB Games/Gamestop for five years and this favoritism bullshit happens EVERY time. When the Xbox 360 came out the company tried to make employees give up their pre-orders, but it didn't stick. It's ultimately handled on a store level.
However, it's not just the employees in particular that you should be worried about. Pre-orders are far from first come, first serve. In most cases, favoritism is shown to friends, family, or even just "good customers."
The point of all this being that if you're not in very good standing with a member of management, you're probably not getting anything on launch day...at least not from EB/GS. If you really want one launch day, you're going to be "camping." Or you could just be smart and wait. It's not like there's anything good coming out for it this year anyway.

I'm going to make the preorder tomorrow morning anyway, but if I don't get a PS3 on launch day, I might just get my $100 deposit back.

I spoke with my local GS employees and they were able to confirm the pre-orders tomorrow, and that they were taking 16. What I found interesting was that they also said they're starting Wii pre-orders tomorrow as well, something like 30 for the store. Obviously I don't know how right he is.

damn.
can't decide whether to get up early for this or not. I'll miss my Spanish class...which is semi-important tomorrow...and the TA is hot.
on the other hand, I have a boatload of games at home that I saved up just to sell for a PS3 when they get into normal circulation.

there only going to take as many preorders and slots they have. once those inital slots are filled the preorder stops.
and as for making sure you get one if you preorder, i think its safe to say if your in the top 8 you should have a ps3 in your hands @ launch.
its all about what # you are on that list.

Jimmie needs to head out and check out the line and film them and whatnot. Like he did with the 360 junk.

So this is confirmed that they are doing pre-orders tomorrow, right? I'm too lazy to read the whole thread.
Also, how much money down are they going to require?
who knows... hehehe no pun intended

That "Quest for the 360" was a really enjoyable video. Crazy to see all the people in line.
I just hope that I'll be able to get a Wii. I'm organizing another drive to get one for another children's home this year, like my group did with the 360.

I called, and it is true that nothing is a guarantee... You literally have to camp outside twice for absolute guarantee.
Also, lets say you do get in line for the pre-order, you will probably end up with the core edition.
Is it really worth it? BIG FAT NO!
Edit:
Some people are thinking that there's a priority on the first person in line... however, I've confirmed that it is not true. Regardless of who's first in line, the first few that pre-order will not be guaranteed.
For example, lets say 12 units are for pre-order tomorrow...
Lets say you're the first in line tomorrow for the pre-order.
On launch day, 10 units arrive at the store.
You're 15th in line that day.
The other 11 people that pre-ordered are all ahead of you in the line.
Result = Collect $100, wait till next shipment.

Wouldn't that be the shits if someone camped out for days and they didn't even get a lame pre-order?
"We only have 5 systems, and you're number 6. Sorry!"
I had the same fiasco with the 360 but i got it the next day!

Ugh... You're right. Ending up with a core system would totally blow. And not even being guaranteed a system due to line placement of pre-orders is even more unnerving (in addition to the existing non-guarantee if what you say is true). I don't know if it's worth bothering with. I'll drive out there around 8, and if there's already a line, I'm just not going to sweat it.

That's total horsecrap and i find that highly unlikely to be true. If your in on the first shipment, you should be in, end of damn story. This how gamestops always done it out here, maybe its different out there.

unlike games system pre orders (think xb360) ARE numbered. and in ORDER of when the order was taken. why do i know? cause i work for a GS in CA. and unfortunatelyi have to be there in the AM for the preorder fiasco.
so say on launch date we get in 9 systems. we will call the 1st 9 people on the list and let them know there system is in the store and ready to be picked up within 48hrs. if they dont show or say they want to wait we will move on to # 10 and so on.
so it doesnt matter if you get in line on launch date, it all goes by your preorder slot #.
im not trying to be a dick or anything im just trying to let people know how it works.
