I was thinking of getting a 360 and hooking it up to my Dell Flat Screen monitor. The specs look like this:

Specifications: Dell™ 1901FP Flat Panel Color Monitor User's Guide

Screen type Active matrix - TFT LCD
Screen dimensions 19 inches (19-inch viewable image size)
Preset display area:
Horizontal 376 mm (14.8 inches)
Vertical 301 mm (11.9 inches)
Pixel pitch 0.294 mm
Viewing angle +/- 85° (vertical) typ, +/- 85° (horizontal) typ
Luminance output 250 CD/m ²(typ)
Contrast ratio 600 to 1 (typ)
Faceplate coating Antiglare with hard-coating 3H
Backlight CCFL (4) edgelight system
Response Time 25ms typical

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution
Horizontal scan range 30 kHz to 80 kHz (automatic)
Vertical scan range 56 Hz to 76 Hz (automatic)
Optimal preset resolution 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz
Highest preset resolution 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz
* Highest addressable resolution 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz

So would the 25ms response time be way too slow to game on it? I don't want to bother if its not worth it in the long run.

I got an LCD about 1.5 years ago, and was told that <12ms was required.

These days you can pick up 2ms screens pretty cheap, so I'd suggest as low as you can go.

For the record, mine is 8ms, and I never notice ghosting on it, so anything more seems just fine. I honestly don't buy arguments from FPS players who swear they "like, totally always see ghosting on LCDs."

Best bet? Just try it out, see what happens.

25ms is horrible. You will have alot of ghosting on that monitor. I see it sometimes on mine and its 8ms.

Yeah I kind of figured that...it was a free monitor so I can't really complain and I've only used if for my (non-gaming) computer up until this point so it hasn't been an issue. I guess I'll see what else is out there. I don't want to spend a lot though if I do get something else....any suggestions?

8ms is the highest acceptable response time for gaming. I bought a monitor for HD for my 360 blind, and I got pretty lucky. I have this (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Envision-19-LCD-Monitor-H191W/sem/rpsm/oid/147648/catOid/-12965/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) one. Games look great on it and there is no ghosting. I'm not sure how much you want to spend though. I don't use it for my PC, so I couldn't tell you how websites, etc, would look on it. 360 games definitely look great though.

Since you will be doing gaming, it's best to stick to 9ms or less.

For non-gaming or video applications, 25ms would be fine.

That monitor is small, low res, has bad viewing angles and a terrible response time. No gaming!

This thread is evidence that manufacturer's often fudge their numbers a little bit - meaning some people with 8ms say they see ghosting, while people with 16ms say they don't.

In general though, I'd say 25 is taking far too much of a chance. 8 should be fine if you buy a quality panel (Dell should be fine), and 6 would be great.
