View Full Version : Do you ever feel chained to a console because of backwards compatibility?

I am going to get a Wii...and another console this gen. Now I am starting to look in the 360's direction but I have to admit having one system to play 3 generations of games is pretty sweet. I own PS1 games as well as PS2 games and it would just seem to make sense to go with a PS3 this gen. I would go with all 3 but as it is I don't have enough time for a Cube and a PS2 so I definitely wouldn't have time for 3 consoles. Does anyone else feel chained to BC?

no, i buy which ever console(s) has the games i want to play.
If i already have a console to play a game why would i need to have another.

Not really. I mean, I already have the previous console to play those games, right? The only real influence for me is how satisfied I have been with the company's previous product. For this reason, I am much more likely to buy a Wii than PS3 or 360.

Yeah, I tend to just keep the systems I've got. However, if there was a lot of PS2 software I wanted to play and didn't have a PS2, or a lot of GC software I wanted to play and never had a cube, I could see the reverse side of this coin being true. Having missed out on games and being able to "catch up" could be a selling point of a new console, especially as games for the previous gen get cleared out of stores and you want a new (hopefully more reliable) disc drive to play them on.

But, as every CAGer will tell you, we don't get through backlogs anyway.

uh, i just bought shenmue for the DC, i forgot how much time this game involves, i love it, but no other console has it. plus when you play with BC, you lose that feeling, like playing SMB on GBA and not the NES.

Somewhat. The reason is that it gives me a backup of a previous console I own (just in case mine breaks down) and when I'm away at college (such as right now), I don't have to clutter my tiny apartment with several consoles (can bring as few as possible). That's why I like the PS3, since it will be able to play all my PS2 and PS1 games (The two best consoles ever IMO), and I don't have to haul my PS2 and PSOne with me.

That's a bit different though. In the case of Super Mario Bros on the GBA, you're not playing the original game. Playing Playstation games on a Playstation 2 is no different than playing on a Playstation. You can even use the original controller.

Yeah, I also keep my consoles (the only time I sold a console, I bought it back, and swore I wouldn't do it again). So, no, I never feel the need to buy a console that has bc to systems I already have. If I want to play an game, I have no issue hooking up a console to play it (I usually have 5 hooked up at a time anyway, more for show than anything, since I'm rarely ever using all 5 in a month anyway).

Now, if you never owned a Ps1 or 2, and you have interest in those games, getting a PS3 might make sense (though, you could argue it might make more sense just to buy a PS2 and play them through).

So, my console decisions are usually only based on the games out for it.
