View Full Version : The Wii, so much more than a casual gamer's system

Ok, back in, oh say Pre E3 I was not interested in buying any next gen consoles whatsoever, except for maybe a 360. I had heard odd rumors about the Nintendo "Revolution" and it really did not spark my curiosity whatsoever. Well, E3 came around, and with it, the Wii was introduced, and it changed my views upon next gen and mainstream consoles forever.

Just by looking upon the system I thought to myself, what a ridiculously genius idea, a perfect controller for a great system, and it works according to those that have tried it out. Games such as Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption made me feel very good about the system, but one game locked in my vote for the system, Super Smash Bro Brawl. The trailer that they created was flawless, energetic, well thought out, and had an aura to it that made me watch it 40+ times, no joke. So that is how my passion for the Wii began.

As time passed by and no news was introduced until mid summer, my desires had been somewhat shaken since hype had died down, but then information came out, story upon story about prices, accesories, and MORE games. This brought my hopes back up to when E3 introduced it and this continued until Sptember, in which the heavy news began to come out.

Now before I get in to the rest, I have to say I bought a DS in August, and oddly, I was actually amazing, baffled, but my Mom actually played my DS, Brainage of course. Now she had had no prior experience with V Games, except maybe Pong or Pac Man, and she keeps up with, and she does play it. Then my bro played it, and soon my dad, and this began bringing up a new spark of amazement, what if the Wii had the same effect.

Never before had my family played video games together before, except me and my bro of course, but my parents, never want to touch a console. The Wii however leads me to believe that this could be the console that brings gaming mainstream to people of all ages, people that can play together, come together as a family unit, friend unit, or community. Crazy talk? No, it is not just a hopeful dream, but when I heard about big Multiplayer pick up games such as Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, and Elebits, which are both so easy, it leads me to believe that this sytstem can breathe gaming life in to some non gamers, creating a ripple effect, one non gamer telling other non gamers in the workplace, and suddenly in becomes huge. Is this just a far fetched idea or can it become reality, and do you want it to become reality, a system that everyone can pick up and play that does not need extensive learning, hard to memorize combos, and 1000 buttons? Answer my question and discuss this as much as possible, and we can talk sometime, ok, cya.

Just seems like a pretty intelligent new user who is a Nintendo fan. I say "welcome aboard"!

Anyway, yeah, assuming Nintendo can scoop up the casual gamers and rope in non-gamers, this is gonna be huge. Just don't know if those audiences are willing to sink hundreds of dollars and hours on a pasttime so new and different from what they've been used to.

Just getting mom and dad to play your system isn't enough to put Nintendo over... they need your mom and dad to play it and then go out and buy their own system or at least buy game titles that appeal to them on their own volition.

I love how new users all assume that the website didn't exist before they joined.

No offense OP but these points have all been mentioned a million times before in plenty of other threads.

this will end up cut and pasted in an email job application to nintendo power or another gaming mag in an attempt to show "previous writing experience."

Oops! I did it again.

So what, the guy wanted to share his individual thoughts, his individual experiences, and present a question he wants to discuss given everything else he presented. All of that is unique to him, not to the other threads in the past. I'm glad he shared, I enjoyed reading his post - always nice to see people that are excited, positive, and enthusiastic about something as cool as the Wii.

NoRestraint2k8, to give my thoughts on your question, I think it's very possible, but as Scobie said, it's not going to be easy. I do think, however, that given the hype that is already brooding, one or two mass-market killer apps could legitimately vault this console to a household-name status that few might have expected in the early discussions of the console. Most of the formula for massive mass-market success is already there...so it could happen.

Don't feel bad, NoRestraint2k8, most of us in the Wii thread feel the same way and have had numerous debates with "non-believers" for the many months since we learned what the Wii was. So we're all pretty tired of hearing how "The Wii will Rock!/The Wii will fail!!"

Welcome to the club and enjoy your stay!

And if all users just went ahead and posted a new thread everytime they had this kind of epiphany...

I respect all of the threads prior to this discussing this issue, and if I were to have gone through a large amount of the threads I would have known, but I didn't, so I made this one.

Anyways, do they usually begin commercials before the system comes out, or would they do it after release? I think it will be a "workplace" conversation, but it will actually take playing a Wii to get them to bite. But meh, it is so uncertain and depends on so many things, I know this had been discussed a lot, but more would be nice for newbs like me.

How dare he discuss his personal thoughts on the Wii - on the Wii message board.

Burn him - burn him at the stake!

I'm pretty excited about the Wii too but it's looking like Japan is going to get all the cool unusual software and the US is just going to get straight up games again. A shame.
