Alright, so I have been in the market for a new car for awhile and finally decided to take a drive out to a dealership where I had seen a great deal on a car I had been looking into for some time.

Btw the car is an 2003 Nissan 350z touring. Anyways, I get there start talking to the salesman and then he goes onto tell me that the car was stolen back in cali and that it was sold to some guy in Illinois and then sold to the dealership.

Ok so now my question is, how realiable do you think this car is, because the price is almost to good to pass up. But I do not want to get screwed, also I was told I would need to pay in cash for the car due to the stolen part.....but they are still aloud to sell it?

Ok and for my last question, is anyone here familiar with the 350z? I have been looking into the car for awhile, but would just like to hear what the CAGs think of the car.

Hold on, you're thinking about knowingly buying stolen property?

:dunce: is right.

You actually have to ask about this?

nuff said. If you got questions, just call the local PD about it. Just get the vehics VIN # and have them run it to make sure everything is legit on the dealers end.

It's fast and sexy, but damn right get the vin checked and also the car checked by a mechanic friend or someone who knows a lot about cars, make sure it's not refurbished n sheeznit !

It's probably a theft recovery, and probably has a rebuilt title, which is perfectly legal but will significantly decrease it's value. There may be nothing wrong with the car, but I hear some insurance companies may have issues with insuring a vehicle with a rebuilt title. I'd double check via a Carfax first and make sure nothing is up. I find it hard to believe that a dealership would knowingly sell a stolen car, but I've seen stranger things happen.

BTW, the 350Z is a great car. They are affordable, have a nice solid power band, great brakes, and they'll corner great too. I don't own one myself but I've driven a friend's and it was a joy. I do however own a 1970 Datsun 240Z, the patriarch of the Z family.

It could be perfectly legitimate. A car gets stolen, the owner gets money from his car insurance company who sells the car at auction once it's recovered. It's not uncommon for a used car from California to wind up being sold at a dealership in another state (a number of the used cars in Washington are actual trade-ins from California).

In any case run the VIN with the local PD to make sure it checks out and always be wary of a car being sold for cash only, dealers love to do that with cars that need (or will soon need) expensive repairs so people don't default on their payments.

Yes, this is exactly what it is, I must be out of it.....:dunce:, because I guess what I typed didn't really make much sense lmao. Thanks for clearing up that up for me gofishn, and I already had a carfax report and this is exactly what it said, a theft recovery.

So I guess that really answers my question. And I plan on getting my mechanic to check it out fully tomorrow. I also called my insurance company and I gave them the vin# and everything was good on their end, so I guess I will be able to get the car fully insured.

Btw, one more question. I was told at the dealership that I would need to pay for the car in cash and that you can not get a loan on a theft recovery vehicle, is there any truth to this, or is this dealer trying to make the deal sweeter for him?

Edit: Ok, 1 more question, is there any truth behind cars coming from cali have a different emissions test than say Illinois. I mean, I really have no idea but I heard just around that because the car came from cali it might not pass emissions....this can't be true...can it?

So once again thanks gofishn for the input :D

I would assume Cali would have a the toughest emmission test to pass.

How much cash we talking here. Are you going to the car dealer with $20 grand in a suitcase. I would just make sure the car dealer is relabile more then the car.

Thats what I thought, about cali being the toughest....so does that make a difference for when I would need to get my emissions test done here in Illinois or do I not need to worry about something like that?

And cash wise I plan on bringing $14 on a check to the guy.......Its listed at $16, but earlier today I told him I would see what I could do, and said nothing higher than $15 out the door.

So tomorrow I plan on going there tomorrow and seeing what they will do with cash in face method. I am also going to make sure they throw at least some kind of warranty in there. At least being 1 year, but would rather get 2 years thrown into the deal.

Thanks for all the positive reponses guys, any more help is always welcome. :D

Well it should easily pass emissions test since California does have to the best of my knowledge the toughest test from everything I hear when I go to get my smog check. Why wouldn't you be able to get a loan for the car? It's just a used car, that well was stolen. Just make sure everything is in proper working order. This dealer seems real shady to me, cash only, no loan. Anyways, Good Luck.

no there is a financing way for you. if you go through credit union or capital one. they will give you the blank check. whatever you paid for it is what you will finance the check . the rates average about 6.5 percent which i saw last month. thats the a little easier than carrying a boat load of money in a sack.

as for the 350z. its a good car. it performs solid, great power, turbo charged, real wheel drive and you have the touring ed. which probably has the 18inch rims, spoiler, and other cosmetic changes on it.you will be happy with the purchase. the ride comfort is there but can get a little rough if your driving long distances thats how i felt atleast driving my friend's Z. if things go right..its a great deal but if you do buy the car...dont sign the contracts until the car is completely fixed. get the carfax report and try to get the repair history on it. no matter what car your getting this is a must in my book. i know that is what dealers must do as part of the lemon law here in jersey. just becareful with these buys. take every precaution thats necessary to ensure you that you come out of the lot with little to know problems. good luck and if the sale goes through have fun with your new purchase.

Good info, but there is no factory turbocharged 350Z, just a naturally aspirated V6.

Thanks again for the info, and like gofishn said there is no turbo charged Z yet, but anyways how long would it take for me to get this check through capital one or credit union? That interest its low to so that makes me even more interested.

Yes, as everyone said, Cali has the toughest emissions test to pass.

As for the Z, a great car. I very much wanted one, but yeah, kids shouldnt have sports cars at 17. I drive an Altima though, so still a Nissan. GREAT cars. Very little problems with them. You'll love it. What color is it btw?

well according to them it takes only 1-3 days for the check to arrive because once you finish the online app...approval time is almost instant.

there are some really good articles here at edmunds you may want to read before you do any type of financing.

here are a couple others i found

E-Loan
https://www.eloan.com/s/show/auto?context=auto&user=edm&mcode=edmhomt134ahpp

Capital One
http://www.capitalone.com/autoloans/faqs_blankcheck.shtml?linkid=WWW_Z_Z_Z_AC1_C3_04_T _FBLN

this link links you to the faq about their blank check system. i sure you can navigate to the application screen easily.

there should be credit union located in your state. what state do yo live in?

it seems like the used rate when up to about average 7.5-8.9 depending on how long you want to finance. tha blank check is a better system because you will get teh average rate instead of the bloated dealership rate. one thing is dont let them know that you have a blank check. it will make negotiating harder for you because it seems like you can pay any price you want. get as low as you can on the Z and dont sign the contracts until they fix the problems anyway good luck and keep us up to date on your situation.

EDIT: just read the others about insurance. its going to be expensive if your by yourself. i bought a mazda 6i and they should full covereaged would run me about 2500 and im 24. im still under my parents and with the added 2001 maxima we are paying 2000 all together. if you do get this..get it under your parents plus if you have good grades send that to the company..i dont know if you know that already but it will take a couple hundred bucks off.

Thanks for all the good links and info, and yes I did know about insurance. I had already called the insurance company even before I took the drive out there and it would only be another $300 on top of what I pay already.

So it would be around $800-900 a year for full coverage under my parents of course. And I have good grades so that always helps with the insurance and since I have never gotten a ticket or in any kind of accident, knock on wood, my insurance is pretty low for my age.

Btw I ended up going over there earlier today to check the car out again, and I took the car onto the highway for a nice spin and I must say, the car is dam fast and a very nice ride. Well considering my 93 Ford Explorer is so dam loud (hole in mufler or its about to fall off) and the fact I am lower to the ground is actually fun.

So tomorrow, my dad and myself are taking another trip there to hopefully bring the car back to our town and have my dads friend (mechanic) check out the car and make sure theres nothing wrong with it.

I will post some pics of the car in my driveway tomorrow and will keep this post updated with what happens, and thanks again to all the CAGs that have been a huge help :D

I say blow off the 350z and get a Sierra. The gas mileage isn't that radically different, you'll get fewer speeding tickets, and you could haul stuff!

Although honestly, the G35 is sweeeeeet. The ride is smooth, and though I think you get slightly lower HP, it'll still go fast enough for the ladies. Ignore that it doubles the price.

The G35x and 350z are pretty much my two favorite cars :/
Dont get a Sierra.
