View Full Version : PS3 will not have "Gamerscore"

I've got a decent-sized interview with SCEA's executive VP Jack Tretton that I'd like to publish in its entirety later. For now: I asked Tretton if PlayStation 3's online service would have a functionality roughly equivalent to Xbox Live's "Achievements" feature, which lets other players see how well you're doing with your Xbox 360 game library, both in terms of individual accomplishments and an aggregate "gamerscore."
Will PS3 have something like this?
The short answer: no.
The long answer: sort of, but it'll be game-by-game rather than "pan-platform."
Read on for the exact quotes.
Wired News: Will there be an "Achievements" or "gamerscore" style feature in place?
Jack Tretton: We didn't mention that, but it is our intention that we would have it -- although I think it would be game-centric. It's very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples' success on Madden.
So the publisher will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis. The intention right now is not to have something that is pan-platform. We do intend to do that with our [first-party] stuff.
WN: Do you have a name for this?
JT: No, not at this point.
WN: And it's not in the launch titles.
JT: No, not to my knowledge. There will be 19 online games available day one, but I'm not aware of whether or not that service will be available in any of those.

Althought I dont give a shit about my Gamerscore on 360, It just feels like its nice to have.
I dont really care to bad, but it would have been a really nice addition.
good move by sony. There are many people cheating with gamesave for the X360 achievement anyway.

It's more sad then anything else since Gamerscores don't mean anything.

Good news. I dont want my game designers worrying about points external to the game influencing their designs.

Gamerscore is a loss, not a huge one, but a loss none the less for the PS3. Sure, people cheat with their gamerscore, but I know that it'd get me to play PS3 games rather then keep them wrapped up in the plastic for trade bait. I liked the idea of Gamerscore, and it's sad to see it go. Hopefully Sony will reconsider and toss it into a firmware update.

Achievement points were a loss opprotunity for Microsoft.
If ONLY they fricken had the ability to convert your achievement points into Microsoft Points...
It doesnt have to be a huge Conversion either. It can be like 100 MP for every 1000 achievement points. So the game you spent so long getting 1000 ACHIEVEMENT points for you can then buy some extra goodies for your game. Or some pictures or wallpapers.

No we don't, please explain. The gamerscore is not tied to save games, it's tied to the profile.

Um no. Lets use madden 2006 for example. Someone got all the achievement, save the game and then ulpoad the save file. Someone download that save and transfer it to the HDD. When the save file is loaded, all the achievement is unlock. Most of the on the top player on theglobal leaderboard at mygamercard.net are doing this. And the fact that you can go online with backup games probably didnt help.

i believe the gamesaves thing only works with some games where it automatically unlocks acheivements, otherwise you still have to play
