Here the first set of pics when unwrapping a prototype package of the PS3 system with it's accessories (from IGN's UK office):

In addition, the office of PSM magazine received the same prototype bundle, and was able to give some preliminary insider info on what consumers can expect from the PS3:

1) It's SUPERQUIET. Yes, we've said it before but we're still surprised. It makes less noise than a PS2 - just a thin, quiet whirr of a fan.
2) It gets warm - but not hot. The fan blows air out of the back and out of the top of the machine (when it's in its upright position). It's a bit weird. You certainly couldn't 'fry an egg' on the top of the machine while it's stood on end, but you could 'thaw a bagel'.
3) Loading discs is a quick, no fuss operation.
4) Screen modes up to 1080p are available - but the games we currently have don't offer 1080 modes.
5) It's see through. You can see all the innards through the smoked black plastic exterior
6) It creaks when you pick it up. The panels groan slightly with the weight of the innards
7) The power supply is built it - which accounts for what heat there is and makes it a single self contained unit (as opposed to 360's game of two halves).
8) The menus are very easy to understand. It's literally just like a PSP.
9) Games seem to leave a data folder behind on the HD disc (some kind of swap file?) We played Resistance, stopped, looked at the disc from the PS3 menu and found a 33Mb file on there (not in the save game directory). We played MotorStorm, looked again, and it had gone.
10) The pad isn't quite as classy as you think it will be. The console looks very special. The pad is a bit, well, ordinary. Dull plastic, and, because it's so light, it feels a bit unsubsantial. The new triggers are a bit rubbery too (though do have an 'L4' 'R4' 'click' at the end which we haven't noticed before.
11) We've got code for MotorStorm, Resistance and Genji so far. With more to follow.

I also heard that the PS3 actually weighs less than the original beefy PS2. Give me some more good news!

What will ship with the package?
The packaging will contain:
# PlayStation 3 console
# SIXAXIS wireless controller
# AC cord
# USB mini-cable (for charging the SIXAXIS controller)
# Ethernet cable
# Multi-AV cable with composite connectors Note that the PlayStation 3 does not come with HD cables of any sort, be it component or HDMI. The main reason for this is obviously a matter of cost, but as the PlayStation 3 uses the same cables as the PlayStation 2, if you already have component cables for the PS2 they'll work with the PS3. As a bonus for early adopters, the first 500,000 PlayStation 3s will ship with a copy of Taladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby on Blu-ray. Interestingly, the movie won't be released outside of this until December 12th, nearly a month after the system's launch.

IGN updated, no HDMI cable

Good to know that it uses the same video port as the ps2 though. IN that aspect Sony is much nicer than nintendo.

Will the retail one be transparent, or just the prototype?

I'm going to bet that the retail version's case wont be transparent.

I believe the retail version will have the same semi-transparent casing. All the system components are finalized and revving for mass production/shipment now. It's only a "prototype" because of the brown box packaging and some added accessories/game demos for PR/mag editors.

looks nice!

I'm very happy to hear about the power supply and fan noise.

what the hell's up with that Microsoft??? damn 360 has a loud ass fan inside, a monster of a power supply, the power supply has a fan, and the whole thing is still pretty damn hot.

I don't think those are demos, just early code of the games.
