Since the current thread is well over 1200 posts, I'll be starting a new free magazine thread. The old thread can be seen here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60670
This thread will be a tribute to mousin (http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Mousin), who was the first official magazine thread monitor.

This is the Ziff Davis Media Online Customer Service link: http://www.zdmcirc.com/service/index.html
Ziff Davis is the company that publishes PC Magazine, digital life, Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), Computer Gaming Monthly (CGM) Games For Windows, Official Playstation Magazine (OPM), and several other magazines. You'll find these magazines being offered free quite often.

How to tell when your subscription is up

By looking at this picture that I stole from GuilewasNK, you can see that the second number underlined is "OCT12".
http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/4373/testabf1dg7.th.jpg (http://img104.imageshack.us/my.php?image=testabf1dg7.jpg)
This indicates that the subscription will not expire until October 2012. This number varies for each magazine, but is usually one of the 2 underlined sections of characters. For Ziff Davis, you can also use their customer service link above.

Different Free-Magazine sites

These offers will require you to sign up for an offer, and/or go through several pages of declining crap that you probably wont want to sign up for. These offers are only recommended if you desperately want an offer. I'll usually put a warning or some sarcastic remark in parenthesis if I post one, or any similar offer. If anyone is curious as to what it takes to get one of these, just see what brianmoy had to say (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1931656&postcount=651). You'll also encounter a lot of spam, according to what Maklershed had to say (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2321564&postcount=52).
How long do these offers last?
Pretty long, in fact, I think they never end.

I highly recommend everyone to create an account with them. Once you have, you'll need to list your job to apply for each offer. It is not uncommon to get declined for a magazine. Every magazine offer has different job requirements to successfully sign up for a magazine. What one person puts might work for them, but wont necessarily work for everyone else. I've noticed that at first, I got declined for several magazines, but now (since I've been a member for a couple of years now), I get accepted to almost every offer.
By the way, you dont have to enter you correct/current job. I've heard that changing your job often might get you a phone call from them, but they'll just ask you what your job is.
Once you are approved for an offer, you will have go through a survey and decline several more offers (unless you're interested). They will sometimes offer more magazines, as well. You can select "no" for every offer, and you will still get accepted for the subcription. Once that is done with, make sure you change the shipping address to "Home". You will then be finished and will receive a confirmation email.
How long do these offers last?
Depends on the popularity. Comic Book Buyers Guide lasted maybe a day. Black Enterprise has been available for over a year.

Almost exactly the same system as freebizmags.com
How long do these offers last? See freebizmags.com.

These offers are difficult to get. They only want to survey people by a certian age and sex. After that, they still narrow it down pretty close. If anyone gets one of these offers to work, please hook up the rest of us with the information you used.
How long do these offers last? Depending on popularity, they usually last about a week, at least, since they're so difficult to qualify for.

These are very difficult to get. I think you really have to work at somewhere specific to get them to work. I never have. Also, I think they limit you to just magazines in your field, so that limits you to most likely just one magazine from them. I usually dont post these offers, and unless someone wants me to, I wont.
How long do these offers last? Fairly long, since no one can ever sign up for them, they last quite a while.

Random Info
-FHM will no longer be published in the US:
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2006/12/fhm_closes_and_the_sun_starts_1.html
(thanx CAG Maklershed)

-For Canadian residents who cant get in on a deal, try this link: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280910
(thanx CAG Firestorm and scoop, from RedFlagDeals.com)

-To inform a magazine of an address change, check this link: http://www.sjev.net/magazineaddress.html

-"Stacking" is the term used for applying more than one offer for the same magazine. For example, a few months ago, EGM had about 3 different free subscription offers. This allowed all subscribers to add 3 more years to their subscriptions by signing up for each of those 3 offers under the same name/address/info.

-Computer Gaming World is now known as Games for Windows
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/02/goodbye-computer-gaming-world-hello-games-for-windows-magazine/

-Official Playstation Magazine will not be published after the Jan 2007 issue. (thanks yukine and Chacrana). For more information, click here (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161694.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6161694). If you had remaining issues left on your subscription, they will probably be transfered to another Ziff Davis magazine (probably EGM). If you need more information, click on the Ziff Davis customer service link above.

10-24-06. I'm eventually going to add more to the original post, like info on the main sites that distribute the most free mags, and any other relevant information. If anyone has any advice, please post it here and let me know.
11-01-06. Special thanks to shrike4242 and CheapyD for stickying this newer thread and fixing the link on the main page (respectively).

I wont be going through the trouble of updating the original post with new offers, since they usually run out too soon anyway. New offers will be posted throughout the topic. If anyone has questions about different magazines, check the first 2 posts to look for a magazine that has been offered free before. If you do not see it there, just post and inquire. Your fellow CAGs and I will do our best to answer your questions.

Here is the original list of offers that are still good, and probably will be for a long time.

I probably wont update the OP unless its something thats been offered from that particular website and has been valid for like 3 months.
Oh, and your welcome to everyone else that said "thanks". LMK if there's anything else you want in the OP, like FAQs.

A classic CAG, who was (IIRC) the first official CAG magazine thread mod. http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Mousin
This thread is already giving him more recognition, which is awesome.

hey guys, i have a question. I went on the ziff davis media site (zdmcirc.com) because i haven't been receiving my EGMs lately, and logged into my accout. And in my account, for last transaction, it said "stop and hold," does that mean the reason i haven't been receiving my magazines is because somehow they got the idea that i wanted them to hold my subscription back?

PS: thanks 6669, for the magazine subscriptions:D

I got my first Tips & Tricks yesterday. I find the key with freebizmag subscriptions is to create a new account if it won't accept you when you log on using your current account. If you already have an account, they probably check to see if you were sent the offer e-mail, and deny you if you weren't. Versus if you are making a new account, they have nothing to check against.

At least, it worked for me with the tips & tricks sub.

Hi there, 6669. Nice thread, clearly spoken and very cleanly formatted. I'm honored there was a ref to me in warning about one of the particularly nasty "offer sign up" free mag deals. I was worried that was the wrong place to say that and people would flame me.

So I've gotten everything I've signed up for so far, and even ones I didn't somehow (I was on a lot of lists before I knew about this thread). Some go to me, some go to Eileen Dover, others go to her brother, Ben Dover. ;)

One I got "Cruising World" I thought was about cruise ship vacations as my aunt and uncle are a retired couple and that's what they do now. But it was on sail boats. :-P Oh well, guess I can pass em along.

Other people have had this problem as well. I have yet to get rejected for a Mercury Magazine deal, so I've never had this problem. It could just be their way of rejecting you. If anyone else has a solution, please let us know. They're relatively new, but we'll probably figure it out eventually.

I never knew about magazine subscriptions on ebay. They are really cheap. Have you ever had any problems with the delivery, and do they come on time?

The magazines usually come in the 6-8 weeks after you buy them, just like the standard processing time, so I guess they do come on time. So far I haven't had any problems with buying subs off ebay. I try to buy the subs from someone who has definitely delt a lot of magazine sales before (good feedback) so you'll know if they're legit.

I appreciate the quick response. I never believed those subscriptions on ebay to be legit because of how low they are for two years. If I wasn't currently subscribed I'd be down to doing that, but my subscription is just about to expire and I want to keep my espn insider login the same and not skip a beat. I know there are a few websites, but do you know of any that you can just renew for a few bucks? I'm not even sure how much it is through ESPN, I'm just getting e-mails that they want to charge my CC to renew.

soxfan30
11-06-2006, 11:09 PM
You can definitely renew your subscription through ebay sales. But I don't use epsn insider, so I just signed up for a renewal through a seller on ebay and it was all set.

Websites aren't different than the sellers on ebay because they all have that 6-8 week processing time, from my experience. Other people might know of the sites that you're looking for, but sorry I can't help you there.

When using discount magazine sites, there's a chance they will automatically renew your subscription if you use a credit card. And when they renew it, it may not be at the low price you paid for it originally. Thats something I'll add to the OP soon.

Might happen with PayPal too, if you leave enough in your account. I've only heard of it being a problem with credit cards though, so you should be cool.

Other people have had this problem as well. I have yet to get rejected for a Mercury Magazine deal, so I've never had this problem. It could just be their way of rejecting you. If anyone else has a solution, please let us know. They're relatively new, but we'll probably figure it out eventually.

I have tried in IE, Firefox, Opera using a free E-Mail address (Gmail) and a paid E-Mail address (AOL) and no go. I have tried various indutries such as Media > Art > Editor and Computer Tech stuff.

Anyone else have something to try?

Rolling Stone is alright... I like some of the articles, and I like how it comes every two weeks or whatever... I have always been looking for Revolver, Circus, Metal Edge, Drum!, Rue Morgue (God I'd love a free sub to Rue Morgue) or... Even.. Fangoria (IF it was free).

When you click on the link you should get a screen to fill out your info. When you hit submit you'll probably get a system error page (like I did). Just hit the back button and hit submit again. Keep doing that until it works. It took me a few times of trying but it finally went through.

Not at all. Stuff and Maxim have no packaging covering them at all and Playboy usually has a black plastic bag over it that says playboy on it.

In other words, yes, your parents will know what you are getting.

My sub was supposed to run until 5/09. Since Ziff Davis publishes EGM as well there is a fairly good chance that they'll transfer remaining subs to EGM. That would put me through until 2015. Here's hoping.

I dont think its the jobs that particularly get you the mags. I put retail for mine, and it worked.
The last link on the main page should still work. IIRC, after you sign up, it sends you to some other site, but I'm pretty sure it still signs you up. It takes 6-8 weeks till your first issue, or a couple of months usually.

January 2007 issue of OPM will be the last.

Cool, I'll add that to the OP. Its ironic though. I checked when my last issue of OPM is, and its Jan 07. I still have EGM till 2022.
This is basically Ziff Davis's way of admitting the only good thing about their magazine was the demo discs. This month's EGM didn't give the review for Resistance, even telling us to check out OPM for the review instead.

I've heard of Spin but dont know much about it. Is it any good? Do I dare clutter my mailbox even further with this sub?
Its kinda like Rolling Stone, but w/o all the rap, commercialism, and celebrities. Spin has more rock and indie to it. I subscribe and I like it. Its not that thick, so it shouldn't clutter your mailbox too much ;)

You have to be careful when ordering discount subscriptions, because sometimes they automatically renew your subscription at the end of it, and charge your credit card for it, at a price not necessarily the price you got it for. I need to include something about that in the OP.

I just emailed ZD about that. Over the summer, I stopped receiving my EGM and OPM, even though I still had eight months or so left in my scripts. They added the two missing issues onto my subscription, and then I started receiving them again...for two months, and then they stopped again.

So, I emailed them complaining again about missing issues and asked that what is left of my OPM can be rolled over onto EGM. I even mentioned that I received a renewal email from OPM a week before they announced the cancellation - even though I had six months left to go. I told them that at this rate, I won't renew any subscriptions with ZD...

Basically, they would recharge your credit card after the subscription expires, without telling you. Then can do it automatically, since they already have your credit card # from when you originally ordered it.

Does anyone know if PC Mag or Psychology Today worth while?

Well Psychology today is a decent mag. It doesn't really go into depth with most topics. It does have some interesting topics depending on the issue. But it is geared towards a mainstream audience, like reading the articles on psy topics written for time and newsweek but it's just a whole mag devoted to it. hope this helps.

PC Mag is a good read for anyone that uses a computer often.
PT is kind of a chick magazine, but still interesting.

Does anyone know if PC Mag or Psychology Today worth while?PC Mag is worthwhile, but I don't think I've ever recieved it from freebizmags. My current subscription is good 'till next October.

I've gotten two subs to EGM, CGW (or official microsoft whatever) till '08, PC Mag, and Dime out of this thread. I've signed up for alot more, but some just haven't gone through/don't go through. Well worth the price of free.

No, I signed up for that and Hollywood Life when I did the Upscale offer, and I never got a confirmation email. Thats odd, cuz they usually send them.

It doesn't really matter on the job. Sometimes it will work for someone, and not work for someone else with the same job.

A lot of people have had this problems with Mercury Magazines. They are kinda new, so no one knows how to get by it. It could mean that they are out of it, yes.

About two months to process. It certainly seems to be legit. But, I paid with Paypal, just in case, as they can't automatically bill me or anything. I haven't had any problems. They even gave me 14 issues, instead of 12.

Have you gotten your last (Jan 07) issue yet? Somebody who already got theirs said they got a notice saying it would be transfered to EGM. IDK when that happens though.
