First off, I am a Nintendo fanboy. But Insomniac's last two video game series were Rachet and Clank, and Spyro the dragon. If Insomniac keeps it up. Resistance will be fucking awsome. I kust felt like posting that.
Edit: Cheapy D says that RFM will notbe fucking awsome. Can I get a confirmation?

It looks like it's being overshadowed by Gears of War which is part of the reason for the lack of hype, since they are both the same kind of game (aliens attacking earth).
However, it looks to be really badass. I cant wait for it!

Resistance could be a good game. Looks like it's trying to be Halo and Call of Duty rolled up into one game. Sony is just now starting to hype it since Killzone is no where to be found. Gears of War will probably be the most bought game this holiday season. It has the hype but it's also looking flipping sweet too.

i think its the gameplay vids thatve really got people (at least on this site) crazy about gow.
that said if youre selling a top rung nextgen game it better look better than current gen stuff, so in that regard, yes visuals mean a lot.

I really haven't been impressed with Resistance. Every video I've seen shows me an average, run-of-the-mill FPS with nice and shiny graphics. It doesn't look like they tried differentiate their game from any other FPS very much. It seems like they just wanted to throw their hat into the FPS arena. However that being said, I am still a HUGE FPS fan and I'd be willing to give it a try.

What's Diakatana?
John Romero was one of the guys behind Doom and Quake when he worked at id. He then left to make his own company called Ion Storm, with his flagship FPS game being called Daikatana. It centered around a character time travelling to different stages. It was started in the early 90s and was thought to be the first ground-breaking FPS to appear after Quake, said to include things like advanced lighting, shadows, shaders, and all the other pop technology buzzwords of the time. Essentially, the biggest game in the world.
But it got delayed forever. And then forever some more. Much like Duke Nukem Forever and Prey, it was thought to have become vaporware (although, of course, DNF is supposed to still come out, and Prey was just released).
Romero had a huge history of being a rock star game designer, preaching about developer freedom with his Fabio-esque locks of hair and whatnot. I think he might even have spent time arguing online with gamers.
There is a famous print ad that ran that I quoted - "John Romero is going to make you his bitch."
Long story short, after being in limbo for a while, it got released, and was less than mediocre. Washed out palettes, shitty graphics, nowhere near as comparable to contemporary games like Half-Life, and essentially as bare bones as you could get.
It sucked. It still sucks. But it was hyped to be the biggest game ever for a long time, when it just sucked.

The reason why this game is going to be good is due to the fact that the ps2, really didn't have any great FPS games... the xbox and Halo set the par so high for FPS, that the ps2 couldn't really match it.... but now.. with the PS3 here's the first game that even has a shot of being as good, or better than Halo(1 or 2). -Like I always say: Launch is a time, where "killer-apps" are born... and hopefully this game will be one of those games.

And I have a little bit of trouble with your launch titles = killer aps thesis. I can think of about 5 games that are considered classics at launch. The rest pretty much blow ass. Care to elaborate?

This one just has the full force of the Sony hype machine behind it. They are trying to pimp it so people don't defect to the 360 and Gears of War.No, it's because Insomniac is really good and they never made a bad game before. If the Ratchet & Clank series was the best 3D platforming series ever (although I can argue about Jak being that way too), I wouldn't be surprised if they made this one of the best FPS to date. Anyone who played it, said it was awesome.
IMO, Resistance will own Gears of War.

You asked the question and here are some of the things that could be the answer. Please don't flame, I'm just trying to help and point out some of the things I've seen mentioned about this game.
Well first off it is by Insomniac. They have been making some great games.
The game features really unique weapons. Like the rocket you can shoot into the air, let it hover there and then redirect it towards a target. Or the "bullet tag" where you can "tag" a spot ont the battle field and all your bullets will fly that way no matter what direction you are aiming. You can also tag an enemy and your rounds will chase them down.
Along with those Insomniac as tried to provide tactical uses for all of the weapons so you might have to think about different ways to use your weapons to get past a point in the game instead of run & gun all the time.
40 player multiplayer. Complete with rewards (medals/badges Battlefield type stuff), full stat tracking, unlockables for high ranked players (I know you can get unique skins for example), 100 person clans.
Also like other FPS they'll be putting their spin on new multiplayer game modes. I saw one that reminded me of R&C, where your team takes over a "reactor core" (there are several scattered throughout the level) which earns your team unlockables that will spawn in and around your main base. Things like guns and mines will pop up to defend your team, the more cores you have the harder it will be for the other team to defeat you.
Single player is said to be rich and deep. Insomniac is known for great story telling and seem to be rather proud of how strong the offline mode will be (which you can play co-op with a friend btw).
Russia as gone black. They've shut themselves off from the outside world and for some reason weird creatures have started to emerge from the country attacking Europe. Slowly working their way towards England which you have to defend having some how survived. As you progress through the game you'll learn more about the creatures and why your character survived, along with what happened to Russia and just what your country and the world knows about the enemy. This game is said to be just the "first part" of whatever epic story they are trying to convey.
Back to multiplayer, the "aliens" (I'm not really sure if they are real aliens or some experiment gone bad...) have ablities. Where in some games, you just get a new model and skin, in R:FoM these guys actually will feel like your different then humans. They can see through walls and run faster during their "rage mode" (drains your life if you use it to long), along with some other stuff I believe.
There is more, but those are the items I can remember off the top of my head that I see Insomniac mentioning when trying to express what'll make their game a different experiance then other FPS.

You should check your sources before making claims. Insomniac (http://www1.gamespot.com/pages/company/index.php?company=12886)'s first game was a pretty good FPS on the PS1 called Disruptor (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/197133.asp).

You're right, I probably should've researched more, I've edited my post. But I honestly do not think that very many people at all know off the top of their head that indeed Insomniac has made a FPS. It means that they have the experience to be able to pull off a good game. Add in their work on shooters for the past four years and there's not really much reason to doubt that they can pull it off.
They're known for making solid franchises (Spyro and Ratchet) and Resistance shouldn't really be any different.

What game was a "killer app" at launch.. for any system? when sonic came out on the genesis, no one considered it a killer app at the time.. not till sonic 2 came out, we said, "oh sonic is a killer app" not till a long time after launch we said "oh lumines is a killer app" because at launch we didn't know.. on the ps2, some people assumed that Bouncer was going to be a killer app - the game floped...
but in regards to launch titles.. you don't need a bunch of definite killer apps at launch... even if Halo 3 was ready, you don't need or want that game at launch. you just need a variety of decent titles, from different genres and usually you might get one to become a killer app. Then you bring out your big guns like Halo 3, and Heavenly Sword, or Gears of War post launch like in March, or April. That's why the 360 isn't doing as well as it should, cause during the summer when it had no competition there was no killer app game released for it.. If gears of war, or Halo 3 would have been released around april or may, then a lot more people would be xbox owners. Now gears of war has won't really have a chance to sell as many systems as it could have.

heck you might be right... what's bad about game.. maybe we missed something.. i definitely don't want to waste 60 dollars.
The last 2 Ratchet games Insomniac made were great. The last 2 games Epic made were Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict and Unreal Tournament 2004. I would say Insomniac has the edge.

I saw some videos of the multiplayer on GI.com and it looked really impressive. The multiplayer maps looked really great, and the bases look like they will be really cool (even though the cooling rods don't really make sense). The difference in powers between the races looks just OK, but it looks like more than your average FPS. Plus, with 60 ranks on the online mode, it should entertain for quite a while. Can't vouch for the single player, but multiplayer looks like it will really be fantastic.

The fact that they made an FPS 10 years ago doesn't really mean anything. FPS games have changed so much, whatever experience they had back then is worthless. Not to mention the fact that it was just a good game for being an fps on playstation, it was quickly forgotten. It was no Goldeneye or Halo. Just because they've made good platformers like spyro and ratchet doesn't mean they can make a good FPS.

Killzone in the sense that it was a huge disappointment? Or Killzone in the sense that it's really not that bad of a game (I think it blows, but alot of people seem to like it), but it did not deserve the amount of hype it received?
I can totally see Resistance being a game like Killzone, in the second sense I gave. Looks pretty, cool idea, but plays just mediocre.

There's a difference. Look at how long and how many platforms Kameo and PDZ were in development for and you'll see why they didn't have much of a chance to be great games.
The Ratchet series gave them plenty to build upon for Resistance, from a pure gameplay stance to solid online play and the unique weapons. Just because Disruptor's old and the genre's grown since then, it doesn't mean that they don't have anything to build upon from looking back at that game. They have plenty of experience to draw upon when trying to create a good game, regardless of how long it's been since they've touched the genre.

Whenever there are events like TGS or E3 they are always LAN hookups with no lag for MP portions of games, I HIGHLY doubt a 40 player online game would run smooth and that fact thats its a FREE online service is even scarier. Maybe the single player is ok perhaps but i dont know

The only Insomanic game I've played is the first Ratchet and Clank. It was pretty good, but I never felt the need to pick up the sequels. Resistance could be good, but at this point it looks kind of generic. I hope for the best, so when I do pick up a PS3 I have a good FPS.
It seems kind of silly to compare Gears and Resistance since it looks like they are two very different games, but I have more faith in Epic to put out a good product, since I bought Unreal Tournament 2004 when it first came out and I still play it a few times a month.
Heck, look at Rare. Its a company that made awesome FPS and platform games. Yet, Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero were overall dissappointing.

My pointless 2¢:
I hate Ratchet & Clank with a passion. Hate the gameplay, hate the graphics, hate the characters, hate that it's frequently referred to as a platformer, when it's a shooter. I was happy to hear Insomniac was finally doing something new, since I did like Spyro pretty well, and Disrupter was GREAT for the time. (It hasn't aged well, but then neither have games like Duke Nukem or Doom.)
Technically Resistance looks good. I mean it's a clear cut above 360 games (aside from Gears of War). But it does look generic to me. Not bad-I think it looks like a solid rental at worst.
But Gears of War also has the technical aspect down-and has an art style I *love*. No idea which will play better though, if either will be decent. I like that Gears seems to be things coming up from inside the Earth rather than aliens coming down. A bit of a twist. And geez, that trailer was actually cool-had some actual impact versus just being "here's shooter 4213".

Doesn't Socom 3 have 32 player online games? Is there lag on those games?
There is. I would hope insomniac would put up a few high player count servers for the 40 player mode to run smooth, Bungie and Id did that for Wolfienstien for Xbox.

Where did you hear that? I've read in two different previews that the AI is one of the coolest highlights of the game. Why the fuck is it so cool to bash everything PS3 says and does?

Depends on where you go, this forum has a more anti-ps3 sentiment than I usually see elsewhere.
