I imagine Sony has a few set aside for warranty service.

More like WHEN you get a defective PS3 :D

1) You buy an extended waranty when you pick up the system, whether it be from Sony or from the store itself (Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, EB/GS, etc.). If it breaks before Christmas, you'll [eventually] get a replacement since the system will be in short supply. But, if and when it breaks, it's usually a matter of "hand in the broken, get a nice new replacement".

2) Send it back to Sony and pay a pretty penny for them to fix it. It'll take a good amount of time and they'll rook you while you wait. In other words, they will apply the same ol' PS1/PS2/PSP policy where you pay and they ~may~ fix the problem.

3) Cross your fingers and pray for the problem to go away or for industrious techies online to poke and prod their way through the system and figure out how to fix most of the system problems themselves. Then again, as with the PS2, this could take up to a few years. ;)

Buy the extended warranty. Or buy it from Wal-Mart which includes something like a 6-month return policy. The thing is just too expensive, Sony has a bad track record, and generally game consoles the past few generations have a bad track record.

Buy the extended warranty...generally non-Nintendo game consoles the past few generations have a bad track record.

no fanboy accusations, please - I'm still getting one. With a replacement plan.

Obviously, get a warranty. Butwhen it comes to getting a replacement from BBY or CC, etc, talk to a media person instead of customer service. Have them get your name and number and then call you when one comes in. This is what my store does atleast.

i know it must sound like it, but its a pritty true statement. Xbox, PS2, Xbox 360 all had problems. Likely the ps3 will have problems. Game cubes almost never broke, at least i havent found many complains on the internet, and the wii is just a upgraded game cube people jest... soo....

what about those people who buy them on ebay? can you actually get an extended warranty in that case?

My GameCube started giving disc read errors before my launch PS2. However, I have a used NES and SNES that are still going strong. Of course, my original PSX and PS1 still work wonderfully.

It all boils down to luck and personal treatment.

Right, but unless all 3 consoles have the exact same failure rate, then one of them is going to have a higher or lower rate.

It is factually accurate to say that one of them is less reliable than the others.

Get the service plan for sure. The kinks in Blu-Ray are just there. I've had two BD players on display at CCity break on me. The first one lasted about 5 months before it got DRE. No use on having this thing on display if I can only show customers regular DVDs on it. The second one went about 2-3 before also going DRE, but this one played continously all day. The first one we only switched on for to show customers a demo every so often.

there was a DRE problem on account of a laser manufacturing error with early batches of Gamecubes. I don't think it was as widespread as the PS2, but it was there. It could be fixed with some manual calibration.

tried googling and this thread came up:

tried to fix his DRE by rubbing the lens with beer

hahah OMG that was YOU!... sorry dident mean it like that... it was a simple mestake. I am not saying gamecubes dont break, just that thier are not oodles of threads like the xbox, or the 360. a ps2 can break dropping it at waist hight , while a gamecube can be dragged a few miles behind a pickup and still play games. Im not saying they dont break, i just dont find whole websites dedicated to ps2 and xbox breakage. or at least i havent found any.

The PS3 will most likely come with a 1year warrenty like previous systems from Sony. Negatives on this is having to wait for the system to be fixed and returned via mail (which you may have to pay for).

The problem with extended warrenties where you can exchange it for a new system at some places is that during launch season, they most likely won't have any system to replace yours with. They are really for later on when the systems are more plentyful.
