View Full Version : Gah! Blasted Data Read Errors! (DC Shenmue II)

After buying it used at a local import store, I've been playing Shenmue II (The Dreamcast PAL version) for the past week, getting through the story line, and playing through the mini-games. Well, today I finally beat the final boss on disc 3 (The Kowloon disc, for those who forget), and went to put in disc 4. When I started disc 4 (Guilin), instead of loading up like normal, a screen that started off with the words DATA READ ERROR.

I had gotten this screen before during certain parts of disc 1 and disc 2, but a quick disc cleaning fixed those problems and allowed me to continue. However, even after a disc cleaning, the error still continued to show, though it would usually come up at different times, with different file names after the DRE words (FLAG1.bin, COLD.bin, etc.). There were times when I could access the menu, but I couldn't continue my game nor could I access the disc 4 features.

Well, a few hours later, as I was typing this post, I decided to attempt to start up the disc again. Surprisingly, I was able to access the menu and continue my game without the error popping up. I went through the opening cutscene of disc 4 and was even able to walk through the village. Unfortunately, when I reached the "Muddy Stream" area, where a cutscene was supposed to occur, the DRE screen came up again, this time a sound file was the culprit. Now the disc is having problems again, and I am unable to finish the game.

I have been reading other forums to learn more about this issue, and it sounds like the Shenmue II disks are fairly sensitive (Mostly because it packs alot on the already sensitive GD-ROM), and even minor scratches could cause the errors. It looks like the former owner of the game didn't take much care of it, as the outer cardboard cover was somewhat beat-up and smelled of cigarette smoke, while the discs had a few minor scratches. I'm surprised that it was disc 4 that wouldn't start, as it looked like it had the least amount of scratches.

*sigh*

Years of searching for this game, waiting for a chance to snatch it at a reasonable price, and this happens. Damn DREs. *grumble grumble*

And listen to the English voice acting? Blasphemy, I say! Blasphemy!

(Plus, I don't have an XBox, and Microsoft hasn't shown any plans to add Shenmue II to the 360's backwards-compatibility list)

Well, I actually prefer the English Voice Acting... plus it has a neat DVD with it too.... you should just snap that one up if those bastards at Microsoft actually consider putting it on the BC Xbox 360 list anytime soon...
