So who here pussed out and started on Casual? Or are you a bit more daring so you chose Hardcore? Or are you flat out dimented and chose Insane?

Well, you can't pick Insane right off the bat. You got to unlock it.
But, me and Trak beat it on casual first to get the hang out it.
Now, were playing hardcore.
Then, we'll beat it on Insane. Looking forward to it.

Started on casual because I was playing with a less experienced friend, but I got into Hardcore before finishing the game on that difficulty and then went back to it when playing with that first friend.

I'm playing hardcore because you can't play insane untill hardcore is done... Just about through with act 2 I think, i'm loving it after finally prying myself off the multiplayer. :D

Not really because when you complete an act on hardcore you get the casual achievement for free. :)

I started on Casual, but I'm not much of a FPS guy. Not only do I prefer them with mouse and keyboard, but I'm mainly playing to see what all the hype and talk is.

Currently on our way through ACT 1 on Insane

Whoever said Insane is lying.
Picked hardcore. I usually do the second hardest setting on my first time through to try to get a bit more out of the game ("heroic" on Halo/Halo 2, "hardened" on CoD2, etc). Since there are only two choices I went for the harder difficulty.
I'm apparently not that good yet, still not used to the controls. I've had a limited time to play. Being able to aim where I want to run and using the chainsaw correctly consistently is a problem. Hate the grenade system. Still enjoying this more than I did Halo on the XBox though.
Playing by myself for now. Maybe I'll try a level I've already beat later on with a friend.

Hardcore. I'm just that way with my single player games.
Casual is for casual multiplayer games, not for experiencing a game like this for the first time.

I started on Hardcore... am currently at the start of Act IV. There have been some points in the game where I wished I was on casual because of the difficulty. I don't even think I will attempt Insane unless I'm in co-op mode...
Did Act 1 on Casual at first, then went back and started over on Hardcore.
I am on Act 2 right now, and it seems easier then Act 1 so far.

That's what I do/did. So I also chose hardcore. After not being able to get out of the prison after 4 tries, I pussed out. I think most of it had to do with learning the controls/weapons vs. wanting to actually make it somewhere the first hour I played it.
I'm going to work through hardcore on co-op.

Beating hardcore gets you the casual achievements.
I started on hardcore, just finished act I. The only place I've had trouble with was 'entering the house of sovereigns' because I tried to stay outside and fight instead of running inside and flanking :)

Beating hardcore gets you the casual achievements.
Sweet. I wish I knew that from the beginning. Oh well, I'll probably play through the first act again later on.
Hardcore, as frustrating as it is at times, is actually pretty fun.
There is a sense of accomplishment when you get checkpoint to checkpoint. It also creates a crazy amount of tension when you get Locusts flanking you or rushing you when you try to shoot at them from a distance.

I'm on casual and I totally suck at it so far. Hardcore is going to be a bit of a stretch for me and I can't even imagine finishing insane. What are the differences? More shots to kill? Less ammo? Better AI?
A Happy Panda
11-13-2006, 02:13 PM
On insane, it takes ALOT of bullets to kill even one grub. And the AI is ALOT more aggressive. And takes very very little for you to die.

Well if you are going for achievements you have to beat the game twice as Dom in co-op.

No you don't.
I played it on Casual the first time through. I'm working on Hardcore right now, whenever I get a chance to play.
I don't know if I'll have the patience for Insane or not.
There's nothing fun about dying 100 times a chapter. It's also lame how, as with most games like this on the higher difficulty settings, enemies bullets simply do more damage and nothing more.
Different, smarter tactics, plus more enemies to deal with each encounter would have been much better on higher difficulties, instead of the simple 'bullets do more damage' crap.

Same here. I'll be trying Hardcore to see how far I get, but I can't see myself running through the Insane difficulty.

I finished hardcore, so now I'm ready to try some insane. From what I hear insane is stupid hard on single player (because of the suicidal AI) but fairly manageable with coop.

Hardcore all the way baby. Casual is way too easy, especially co-op.
Many single battles have taken over an hour of replaying to get through, but it never really gets old, and I keep at it. Great stuff.
For those of you suck too much for hardcore, you'd be surprised how fast you get a lot better on hardcore.

i'd rather they make bullets do more damage for higher difficulties than lowering the AI for lower difficulties...it makes it so that you have to be more careful

My startegy on most games is this:
A few minutes on the easiest setting to get a feel for the controls.
Then restart on the 2nd highest difficulty and finish.
Then maybe, if it was fun, highest difficulty.
With Gears, I am almost finished on hardcore, and will definitely be attempting it on insane, although I seriously doubt I'll be able to do it. But I hope to try it insane on co-op.

Just finished hardcore a day ago. I was starting an online co-op game on insane and beat the first act. Then midway through act II we kind of got bored so we called it quits.

I started out on Hardcore. So far I've been breezing through the game. I've had my share of hiccups during certain parts, but nothing that's taken me 4+ times to replay. Usually I get it within 1-2 tries. Can't wait for Insane over Live.
