It may not be too exciting for a lot of you, but Sega has just released screens of their Virtual Console games.

Is that only cropped because it's on a widescreen TV? Will regular aspect TV's be cropped?

Hmm...I like Sega. I cannot wait.

Doesn't look cropped to me. They're being displayed in their original aspect ratios on a 16:9 set.

shit. cropping.

Yep, my sentiments exactly.

No reason for these to be cropped unless it's a situation like Evilmax said.

Yea, let's stretch it, and really fuck it up.

Are people really this goddamn whiny?

Yes.

Then again, my 42 inch Toshiba stretches images without any noticeable distortion. Hopefully it'll be an either or situation.

Or Nintendo can add a little finish to it, like XBLA.

No need to have black bars all over, that looks like shit.

Valid point, but how do we know that's not left up to the developer themselves?

You know I don't give a shit about the wrapper, I just want the sweet Starburst within.

I think I remember seeing a video demonstrating the Virtual Console where the user was able to resize the screen... in fact after a quick search on youtube I've found that same video. About 30 seconds in they explain that you can resize the screen with one of the analog sticks.

Well that seems like a pretty nice feature. Case dismissed!

that wasn't very reassuring...Sonic still looked smooshed and it looked like there were only 2 settings for screen size.

actually it's a pretty legit criticism. If they want us to pay $8 for old games, they should at least put some effort into emulating it. Anybody can download an emulated game and put it on their tv in a shitty aspect ratio. They should at least make some adjustments, whether it's making the games run in true widescreen or putting a border on it.

With all the compilations that Sega's released, I still see no reason to care about this...

Yeah that's true... I imported that compilation so I guess I forgot that it never came out here.

Gunstar Heroes improves the quality of life.

Well, to be fair, the Sega Genesis Collection looks like a bucket of pure sex on my HDTV, since the games play in progressive scan and full screen, and the disc was $20.

You have fun with your VC, puddin'.

(To be fair, XBLA SFII and UMK3 both were cropped with a border, but could be resized to fit the whole screen - it made a major difference, IMO, in the games.)

Maybe I just don't understand, but why is the border even there to begin with? If I hook up my Genesis to my tv right now the games run in full screen with no border, why is there a border here?
