The core doesnt come with the harddrive (which i believe is necessary to play XBOX 1 games), hasa a wired controller instead or wireless, doesnt come with HDTV cables anddoesn't coem with a headset.

They'd lose a couple thousand dollars but they'd get around $100,000 worth of free advertising out of the deal from all of gaming websites on the web sending traffic to them. It's no different than Best Buy selling a computer they pay $400 for for $200 on Black Friday, just to get people in the door. If I ran Amazon, I'd do a crazy deal like this on a daily basis, where they sell a limited number of something expensive (video camera, video game system, tv, etc.) for dirt cheap, but only like 100 per day. The thousands of extra people that would start visiting Amazon on a daily basis waiting around for these deals to drop would more than make up for the cost of what they're giving away.

I don't know why people put so much stock in Internet rumors when maybe 1 in 10 pans out to be true. Then again it is the internet and it's not like anyone can write just anything on here, everything is checked for trueness after all. Though that photo definately confirms things since Photoshop was never invented and no one would dare try and pull the wool over someone elses eyes with a doctored photo. I'm hoping against hope that this ends up being true, as this would end up being the greatest deal of all time. I mean, even after buying the HDD and the headset (the wireless controller is superflous), that's only $220. And shit, if MS releases a bigger HDD for the 360 for around $100-$150, that makes it an even better deal, as you weren't stuck buying the 20 GB one with the system.

Personally, I'm just happy if I can bad a Premium for $300 AR from MicroCenter, although a $100 possibility is equally intriguing. But, while Amazon tends to keep their overhead astonishingly low, eating nearly $280 per dump of a Premium seems a bit too much unless it's in extremely short supply (as in 50, maybe 100 or so in the hopes that one large purchase will spur other, smaller 360-related purchases) or it's just a $180 dump on the Core.

Let's be realistic here - how will Amazon benefit by selling even the core 360 for several hundred off of its retail price? Yes they will clear out their inventory of them in a few heartbeats but then they will have FLOODS (and I mean FLOODS) of very pissed off customers who didn't get in on the deal.

Now yes Amazon can use a disclaimer like "limited supply" and what not but after all my years of working in retail I can tell you that there are people out there who will either not notice that or will blatantly ignore it since, after all, they want an XBox 360 Core for $100 and will stop at nothing to get it.

I can realistically see the original XBox being clearanced out for $100 however. Its not much of a price drop and the only people who would snap them up are either people buying it to use as a media machine (ie: music/video streaming, game emulation, etc) or those who want a somewhat dated gaming system on the cheap. And let's face it a brand new XBox for $100 is not a bad deal by any means.

Like I said tho while I'm not going to rule out Amazon clearing out the 360 Core's for $100 at the same time being realistic I just don't think it is going to happen. If it were to happen then I too would grab one... but the likelyhood of me scoring one are niltch to nada anyways. ;)

Nah, it's highly unlikely that they would state a time. By getting people to check constantly, both gamers and non-gamers alike, they have the opportunity to sell other items that pop up during a regular search or through straight access to the single website. In that time they can be enticing people to pick up gifts, other things they may want for the holidays, and so forth.

And if they gave a specific time and date then everyone is just going to wait for a half an hour to an hour right beforehand and camp the page without caring about anything else save for the price change. They lose that ability to gain additional sales from making people wait and browse since everyone is going to have tunnel-vision they're going to deal with a good several thousand people at the minimum try and nail the price. Don't go with my estimation, though, because I'm playing it safe with the assumption that this has only hit, well, Kotaku, eventually Joystiq, the originating Tech blog and probably FW, SD, and other deal sites. Since it's still early this rumor can possibly hit wider media as well if it doesn't occur for at least two or three weeks (ie: newspapers, gaming magazines, business magazines) and, well, that number would skyrocket.

Besides, most retailers online are pretty big on offering huge discounts on unexpected products without telling anyone beforehand. You blindside some of your loyal customers and random passerbys, they stick around to see if anything else they wanted is cheaper. And, if they are typically B&M shoppers, they may find that an additional savings between the online store and a B&M price is amazing! We know better, but most people don't. They just don't shop online...unless it's the holidays. Better to keep it unannounced and SHOCKING rather than get us blokes (as wonderful as we are ;D ) who are already in the know, are savvier as shoppers, and people who won't just pick up something on the cheap and walk away.

There are deep pockets this holidays season. These retailers like people who will spend as opposed to us who...well, we'll spend, but spend wisely. ;D

I guess it's possible. But I have a hard time seeing why Microsoft would need to lower their prices at this time. Most of the people who want a PS3 won't be able to get one. The only real alternative is the Xbox 360, which is already $200 cheaper than the PS3. What good would dropping the price do?

Don't forget the $10 off $30 coupon at CDUniverse-- I got component cables for $29.99 and a wireless controller for like $39.99. It helped keep the "core upgrade package" a bit cheaper. (and I didn't NEED the wireless controller, the wired one was fine, I had been wanting to buy a wired unit for my PC though, so it moved there... I don't count that money against the Xbox's price..)

I'm thinking about picking this up as a X-mas present for my 2 cousins (they are deprived of next-gen gaming for at least another year). But I hate the fact that it is a Core. Giving a Core as a gift just says, "I'm too cheap to get you a Premium."

i don't have a 360 yet, so this would be the ideal way to obtain one. 100$ for a core system is fantastic, regardless of what i'd be required to purchase otherwise.

I believe you could play Live Arcade games if you download them to the Memory Unit. Really though you're better off just adding on the HD. Also I believe the HD is required for saving the drivers for backward compatible games.

That isn't really accurate. Come on man, this is CAG. You are listing everything MSRP. Headsets come with many other cheap kits or are often found for under $10 on deal sites. Component cables can be bought from third party vendors for around $10.

This is a deal I cannot refuse.

I have little money and time to play games nowadays. That's why I've been a single console owner for the last 2 generations (N64, GCN). I had no intention to break the habit, but this deal is insane. I might give this to my younger high school sisters as an early X-Mas gift, since I'm keeping the Wii and college hates games. I can imagine getting no more than 10 games in the system's lifetime.

A few questions for those that own 360s:
1) How many non-sport games will the Memory Unit hold? Does anyone know a site that easily shows these figures per game? I do not intend to ever get Live membership b/c of my current/future situation.
2) Besides Live and game saves, what are the perks to owning a Hard Drive?
3) What's the likelihood that these systems will fail to work? I remember there being a huge fiasco with dead 360s.
