View Full Version : Joystiq: gaming "news" website or Anti-Nintendo hype wagon.

I usually check out a couple sites for news and info for gaming, and Joystiq is one of them. I know this has been talked about a little before, but just reading some of the articles today, kinda pissed me off.
They seem to be going out of their way to bash Nintendo like a Pinata lately. I mean i suppose people could call me a fanboy, but I have never been solely a Nintendo player.
A couple gems include, "Is Nintendo the spin doctor of video games?"(though this wasnt written by them they still felt necessary to post it), "Nintendo doesn't like next-gen optical discs".
I guess my biggest problem is they try to act like a video game news site (remember the gaming journalist have to act professional and not cheer when seeing a Smash Bros Brawl trailer), and an opinion/editorial site. Unlike say a paper which has it on different sections, they cram it all together. Thus mixing their opinions with real news.
Though maybe this all just me, let me know.

I refreshed the previous topic 3 times wondering why the fuck I couldn't post.
It is a blog styled gaming site, in response to the previous thread. And as of lately most news has been blatantly anti-nintendo.

I don't think so.
Just because someone isn't as excited about the Wii as some of you, does not make them an anti-Nintendo hype wagon.

if anything Joystiq is typically too nintendo fanboy.

they are all about Nintendo. It's been that way for a while, just look at their userbase-- all their users compare EVERYTHING, every single bit of news to something Nintendo related. except epobirs. Seriously seems like every single post comes back to Nintendo, though.
I would say they are typically nintendo-centered, but will pull any stunt to get more hits regardless. thus, the Zelda thing.

I don't think they are anti-Nintendo, just a poor quality blog. They seem to complain about every platform and spark flamewars in their comments.
Joystiq was my introduction to videogame blogs, and for while I loved it. Then around E3, their terrible writing led me to other blogs that I now check regularly instead of Joystiq. For a blog that considers themselves news journalists (read the post when they called out the IGN user), they write the most unprofessional articles/posts.
Don't even get me started on their Zelda shit.

that's why blogs are blogs. They're made to be unprofessional.

I think you are just a fanboy to a huge level and a little bit of a dumbass.
The site is much, MUCH more antoi Sony (and mostly for good reason) than Nintendo. I think they are rather fair to Nintendo and MS, and really anti Sony. I hate Sony and I think theyare much more anti Sony than normal sites.

This should be posted when ever a blog is brought up. Crap is crap no matter how you look at it.

EDIT: Bleh, I'd rather not discuss this. My point was, in terms of qualty video game blogging, many other places do it better.

The only people on that site who are anti-nintendo are Vlad Cole and (to a lesser extent) former writer Robert Summa.
Everything Vlad Cole posts is a bunch of "Nintendo sux I go 2 Wharton I m smrt" crap.
Thus mixing their opinions with real news.
Isn't that what all blogs do?

"Nintendo doesn't like next-gen optical discs"
How is this "bashing Nintendo like a Pinata"? Also someone posted on another topic how joystiq was taking excerpts from the Wii manual, and that was also "bashing" Nintendo. wtf?

When the 360 came out I remember people accusing them of MS bashing when they reported on the system crashes. And not to long ago when Sony went through that span of bad news, people accused them of Sony bashing. Right now, it's just Nintendo's turn.

If I didn't visit sites that turn out to be either anti-Nintendo or anti-Sony, then my internet really would be used for nothing except porn. At least in the sites I happen to visit, it looks more like Sony's been getting the short end for the most part, so I wouldn'tlet it get to you.

Joystiq is the poor man's National Enquirer of vidgames.

It's not that they are biased, it's just that their articles are so inconsistent -- Which really, is to be expected. At the end of the day, Joystiq is just a blog... a shitty blog, but a blog nevertheless.

They hate Nintendo so much that they host the Mii-maker?

I'm not even going to humor the topic poll question, but I will say that both Joystiq and Kotaku seem pretty big-headed about their status of highly popular gaming 'blogs' that still maintain more 'cred' than big-time gaming sites. I check each occasionally, but I'm not exactly a proponent of either. Smugness concentration levels just a little too high for me.

Joystiq as a whole is not anti-Nintedo, but Vlad (the head blogger for Jokestiq) is biased against the Wii. Cheapy even talked about it on one of his podcasts.
Vlad uses that bias to generate a ton of hits by posting inflammatory topics about the Wii so that the Nintendo fan base will go apeshit in the comments. They fired Robert Summa for comment baiting, yet Vlad does this on almost a daily basis.
EDIT: He does the same thing with the PS3 as well. Is it any wonder Vlad recently interned at Microsoft?

Gamers will never learn. They just time and time again play right into the hands of those posting inflammatory threads or blog entries. Try to discuss something with journalistic integrity, civility, and evenhandedness, and you get ignored like "Ugly Betty" hanging out with the Victoria's Secret models. Be 'provocative' and you're a fucking "Ice Cream Man" in Hell.
More proof that humans gotta have their drama, I suppose. Particularly the stupid ones.

Joystiq used to be good or at least some what decent. I rarely go to them anymore for video game news. mostly just check them for the weekly web comic rap up and that's it. I prefer Kotaku to them anyday, but go to other gaming sites anyway.

Vladimir Cole is a smug idiot who lets his M$ Fanboy show way too often.
Other than that, Joystiq is okay, though I like one of their spinoff blogs (DS Fanboy) quite a bit more.
