View Full Version : Necessary to camp out for the wii?

Is it necessary? Still possible to get one on sunday without camping? (excluding midnight release for those smart asses out there :D )

it depends. It seems like most stores are getting 30+ which is good. Especially places like BB, TRU and Target, some of those stores are getting 100+, in which case it definitely wouldn't be necessary.

Your best bet is to call the places you're looking to buy from, ask to speak to a manager and see what they are expecting. In any case, show up about 2 hours early just in case. Not like there's anything better to do on a sunday morning.

worst case scenario is a rash of dumbasses, who think the Wii will pull in the big bucks on ebay, spamming the stores. That'll happen in a few places, no doubt.

I'm showing up and camping for a while, but that's mostly because the game store I want to buy it from is getting only about ten or so in. It's more of a "I want to support game store X" rather then it being a necessity.

My worst case scenario is that no stores around me have it so ill end up calling my dad in the city to pick one up at the Nintendo Store...

But I wont be camping out....it shouldnt be neccessary with the numbers weve been shown (which might not be true)

No.

Nope, most stores are getting around 50, these are large stores... GS/EB will get less because they are more of them scattered. So while you might have a Best Buy somewhere... there might be like 3 in the area around it so those get split up.

well the reason i ask is i have to be at a work meeting that's mandatory sunday morning at 8am regarding black friday so.. i don't have the option of camping out

Well you can walk into a 24-hours store near midnight, or after that meeting head to where you think you have the best shot. TRU is getting a lot of units, so they might be your best bet.

yeah, sad thing is i work at CC, but of course they aren't allowing employees to buy them, but a TRU is right up the street so i might run up there.

Also, will they release more wii's every week? or is that just some rumor?

I doubt it'll be necessary to actually camp out. Might have to run around to a few stores, but you'll be able to get one if you really want it.

And, yes, they'll have new shipments every week, as fast as they can get them to the stores.

I'd just show up an hour or two before launch at a store you know is getting a lot in.

I think these will be farily easy to find sunday morning, and will be much tougher to find after then due to the x-mas shoppers.

Luckily I have a preorder so I don't have to worry about it.

is it necessary? a big NO.

what i hate or what i'm gonna hate for launch day would be the long lines. it's like everyone in my area knows about the launch, and would love to get one at opening.

why can't it just be like when i saw a last box of TMX Elmo sitting on a quiet shelf at TRU then I walk by the register and got it?

I'm really confused. I hear people posting reports of their Walmarts, Best Buys, Meijer's etc saying that they are getting between 20 and 30 consoles. My Best Buy said they think they will get over 100 (N. Oklahoma City). Someone over at FatWallet said his Walmart said they are getting 25 Wii's but that they got 42 XBOX 360's. As best as I can remember, XBOX 360 launched with less than 400,000 consoles. It's just not adding up.

I don't have a pre-order and I'm worried. I plan on going to Walmart SuperCenter around 6 PM and seeing how things look there...

the TRU numbers are nice, but all over the place.

it looks like most stores will be getting an average of 70-80 units, with half of those being pre-sales (all TRU's took a minimum of 40 pre-sales). where as the TRU's that are opening at midnight are getting 200+.

if you are planning to go to a TRU, I would definitely call before Sunday, as most stores have gotten their allotted numbers already.

I stopped into a local Best Buy last night and they were telling people that waiting... probably won't be necessary. They said they would have over 100 units at their store...

He might have just been blowing smoke... but I think waiting in line is not really going to be necessary.

Okay, I've been on the phone all morning.

Every SuperCenter I called is getting 29 Wii's.

My Best Buy told me yesterday he expected over 100 consoles.

TRU guy said he had no idea if they'd be getting any amount above what they pre-ordered until they actually arrive in store.

Either
a) He knew and just didnt want to tell you

or

b) Nobody had told him and he didn't want to check the computer or ask somebody else.

Most stores know at least how many Wiis they are getting. Not so much with the PS3 because of the shortages.

When do you think they will actually arrive in the stores? Obviously, they aren't shipping them there on Saturday night / Sunday Morning. I'm sure they will start popping up tomorrow sometime during the day. HOPEFULLY. My brother is security at Kmart and has access to where they store those. He should be able to get me a unit early. I was pissed about the Sunday Launch but now it looks like it could work out. Either way, if not there, than Meijers is my target at Midnight Saturday night. I should be able to save 10% at both places.

I talked to the manager of the local circuit city and he said they're expecting "plenty" of units to satisfy the lines. He, too, didn't have an exact number, though. Said they'll know their exact allotment by either late today or early tomorrow. He said camping out probably MIGHT not be necessary, but from the number of calls they're getting...being there at opening, at least, pretty much will be. I told him my plans and he said he thought I'd be fine.

I'm going Saturday afternoon, probably around 2 PM....and they open at 8 AM. So about 18 hours...

There's no way in hell I'm staying overnight anywhere. I have a wife that I prefer to keep me warm at night, not some pimply faced teenager. ;)

My plan is Walmart SC at around 6PM. If that fails or the line is longer than the 29 units they are getting, I'll be heading to Target around 5AM to see what their line is like. If that fails, it's Best Buy or Circuit City.

I would go to TRU before you go to Target, BB, or CC, as they're supposedly getting the biggest alotment and took a relatively small number of preorders at many locations.

I'm starting to wonder how accurate those inventory trackers like wiiseeker.com are. I heard from a target employee near me that his store is getting only 8 wii's. Hes not a gamer so I pray hes wrong and thats the PS3. But it kinda has me in doubt now.

Necessary to camp out for the wii?

Define "camp".

If you mean a handful of hours, then I'd say, yes, it's a good idea. Why not err on the side of Caution?* If you mean literally pitch a tent for a Wii, then unless you live in an area where the population far exceeds the options, I'd say no. Sure, many will walk right up to the back of a line within an hour of opening and luck into a Wii, but I really, really, really think the Launch Day demand is going to be greater than most message board posters care to consider. I call that typical gamer myopia and hubris.

The thing is, many people are probably already adjusting their holiday strategy to eschew the PS3 and get the Wii instead. Smart parents that aren't insanely rich will just tell their kids to buck the fuck up, that it ain't happenin' this year with Sony. EBay scum will just get friends and family and anyone else on their cel phone list to linesit with them, selling multiple items at a much smaller profit margin than one item at a 200% markup. You don't think this will happen, anyone? Your loss.

Also, getting there earlier ensures a much better chance of getting the games and accessories that you want. I assure you, extra Wii remotes and nunchuks are going to be impossible to find for at least a week in-store after Sunday morning. Who isn't (including eBay fucks) going to buy at least one extra Wiimote/nunchuk combo?

*---Seriously, you're not likely to find someone on these boards that enjoys linesitting less than me, but what's the harm in putting in 6-8 hours that turn out to be 90% unnecessary? I don't think that's a ridiculous amount. If you get to a store and only a couple people are there, then go grab a coffee and a doughnut from a gas station. Read the damned Sunday paper in your car. Kicking yourself for losing a few hours' sleep is far less excruciating than bashing your head into the dashboard for arrogantly and naively thinking that showing up thirty minutes before store open would be plenty.

Also, please keep in mind that the Wii launches on a weekend (as opposed to a Friday) and since people probably feel like they've got a much better chance to secure one, they're more likely to show up for one. The only question, in my mind, is when.

Glad I did the preorder thing. Good luck...if in your experience there's such a thing as "luck".

Oops! I did it again.
11-16-2006, 05:16 PM
My magic number for the moment is 14: 14 hours. I'll try to center around that.

So if my Toys R Us is doing a midnight launch, I'll go at 9 or 10AM.

If they open at normal hours, I'll go a few hours before closing and start.

Or if I opt to go to a Wal-Mart, I'll probably go at around noon.

I'm the type to play it safe...I've been burned too many times to rely too much on luck.

The thing is, many people are probably already adjusting their holiday strategy to eschew the PS3 and get the Wii instead.

I've never bought this argument. The systems are too different. Someone wanting a PS3 and Resistance at launch aren't going to pick up a "kiddy" Wii when they get shut out. They'll be much more likely to turn to the 360 and Gears of War.

Similarly, I'm interested in the Wii, and have no interest in the 360 or PS3.

MS and Sony are after the same market, Nintendo really isn't after that demographic.

I'm going in at 9am to 10am, to see the lines(most stores open at 10). Future Shop put out a ad to say they'd be getting 15-60 Wii's, and the EB in my area said that they'll have more Wii's then people Pre-ordered for so i might get one there(i got Zelda P-Oed their). My current plan is to wake up on Saturday, eat breakfast, prepare my supplies, and drive 15 minutes to a TRU that is doing a midnight launch. If anyone is lined up at that point (around 10 or 11 AM), I'll hop in line. Otherwise I'll keep checking back every two hours and whenever a line has formed, that's when I'll start camping. I've never camped for a console before, and I've got nothing going on that day anyway. My wife is being very understanding about all of this.

$40 coupon?

Please elaborate...

It's just that $40 off $199 CC coupon that people get from the USPS for a change of address... a scan was posted in the deals forum, but it's YMMV since the resolution isn't that great and the barcode doesn't work, forcing the cashier to manually punch in the number...

Anyway, I'll probably hit Walmart on Saturday night. A couple friends will be at Walmarts in other parts of town, and we'll be communicating regularly. Then, I'll be doing TRU on Sunday morning.

I'd prefer to get one from TRU because that's where my stack-o-gift-cards is from, but Walmart at midnight is my safety just to make sure I get one. I'll either return the one I get from Walmart if TRU comes through for me or sell it to a friend.

Well, no one said it would be even a majority of those shut out of a PS3, or even a quarter of them. But there will be some, be it more 'open-minded' gamers, parents who are just trying their best, or eBayers who want to at least make something of these consoles. Which is why I will forever hate them. The Wii has to be the 'Plan B' of many. To dismiss this based solely on the obvious contrasts of the two consoles is missing the point, I think. Some people want something from this weekend. It's just about getting caught up in the zeitgeist of the moment.

Anyway, kids, just get there early. Do your research. Know your options. Figure out the 'safe bet' time and add two hours to it. And if that means you get there ridiculously early and have to go lounge at Steak 'n' Shake, so be it.

I feel better about getting one on Sunday. My local target had maybe 20 people camped out side for the PS3. And they are only getting 8 of those. The word on the net is my Target is getting 60 wiis so I have a really good feeling that if I show up a few hours before they open I can get a wii.

The Plan:

Friday night
Sell off Nintendo DS, Gamecube, and any games that I could part with and make up most if not all of the cash.

Saturday morning
Hit up the three Walmarts in my area and check what they will do. Vouchers are most desired. If I must wait then it will be done closer to noon. Grab some food from the grocery store, empty the bladder at home and just chill out with a thick book and conversation.
