Line cutting, what the hell are wrong with these people?

NEW YORK CITY--In recent times, New York City has rid itself of the stigma of being a grumpy city. While in office, then-mayor Rudy Giuliani "cleaned up" much of the city, and tragic events, including the World Trade Center attacks, have helped the metropolis's citizens bond.

Now it appears as though one thing may rip them apart--the PlayStation 3.

In stark contrast to the jovial atmosphere of last night, emotions of those waiting in line today to purchase PlayStation 3s are reaching fever pitch. Gamers who were on the cusp of getting a PS3 last night have now been edged out by line-cutters looking to take advantage of the situation.

Outside the SonyStyle Store in Midtown Manhattan, several gamers voiced their disgust at the way the line was being managed, complaining of seeing their place in line move farther back because of line jumpers.

At the Circuit City in Union Square, several gamers told GameSpot that people have been cutting the line since midweek, with the most coming in the last hours.

"There's no management of the line here," said one hopeful PS3 owner. "People are just jumping the line, there were even fights last night. It's totally messed up."

Employees of Circuit City told GameSpot that the store will have 100 PS3s for sale but will also raffle off an additional 100 consoles beginning at 10 p.m. with the support of a New York City radio station.

Local news stations are also covering the escalating tension, reporting that some gamers have moved about 100 feet backward since they first got in line.

The weather doesn't look to help matters, either. An overcast morning turned into a blustery afternoon with winds picking up--the leading edge of an incoming thunderstorm. Rain and winds up to 35 miles per hour are expected straight through the console's midnight launch.





I just dont get it, I would be flipping shit if someone tried this infront of me. ITs one thing to sell your spot, but to get moved back almost a 100 ft is obscene. These people have some balls on them to just cut, in font of all these people. I dunno, line cutting has always pissed me off.

I wouldn't budge if I saw someone cut in front of me. With the risk of getting a little too close my male peers, I'd make it impossible for anyone to cut.
Of course, that still doesn't stop the assholes who let their friends cut.

I was waiting in line for a Wii at TRU this weekend and a guy cut right in front of me. I was the last one in line to get a Wii voucher and the poor soccer mom behind me got the shaft because some douchebag cut in line. What a bunch of assholes...........

Damn, that's messed up. If you've been camping for hours (or maybe even days) and people cut in front of you, why dont you do anything about it? Seems like a waste of time since you're probably not gonna even end up with a console.

This happened to me with the 360. Unless you're somehow first in line, people are going to let their friends in. Of course, my friend and I started going off on these guys in unison, and they wouldn't budge. We called the store 4-5 times to ask for someone to manage the line, but the manager was a total pussy to do anything about it.

I still got one on launch, but it pisses me off that people cut. That's why I'm going to try to be first in the Wii line.

For all the people saying you should do something if they cut in front of you,...what? Is it worth getting in a fight and going to jail/getting sued? Is a console worth violence? I know it shoudnt happen and it has happened to me before. All you can do is complain loudly to the management and hope they do something about it.

Life isn't fair and when you have store managers who only care about selling their crap and not about customer service this will continue to happen. It boggles my mind that you get so many incompetent special ed managers who have such a hard time when it comes to managing a sale like this. Chairs, tickets, 1 employeee to work a few extra hours to manage the front of the line etc could easily solve all these line nightmares.

Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft can easily solve this problem.

Don't launch until you have a reasonable amount of machines to sell.

That will curb the ridiculous eBay prices, the unruly lines, and the threats of stealing. If they can't make the appropriate amount of machines then they should only be sold online. That might not be best for everyone, but I have seen too many stories of people getting robbed and shot over PS3s in the United States.

Store managers are put in the ultimate catch 22 because of the low supply. Customer service is like security, you can't expect to have it unless you pay for it and I guarantee most places are WELL understaffed for the PS3 launch. You know upper management wants to half-ass as much as possible.

I'll happily wait until the circus atmosphere is over to buy a new system. Plus, I really don't see the point in paying $600 to beta test a PS3 or any other machine. Machines ship with too many issues on launch lately that should have been resolved before launch date.
