Awesome so you can just buy one anywhere and as long as you register it at that site you get the free games?

If so, that'll work out great if I get a $100 core from amazon.

Okay, this seems suspicious to me. The site is xbox360nextgennow.com, which doesn’t seem like an official Microsoft site. Plus, you have to sign in to your account when you get there. How do you know it’s not a fake site trying to steal people’s passwords?

yeah it's directly from microsoft. I tried registering my console I bought last January for kicks. I'm sure it'll fall through though. You have to sign up for a brand new XBL subscription in the same time frame which is how they'll probably weed people out.

It's a bummer that you need a NEW Live account for this to work. I don't suppose you could renew a year in advance to get the same results??

dubbfoolio
11-20-2006, 04:09 PM
I doubt they have anyway to link the serial number to the purchase date, because there's no way to know how long the console has sat on the store shelf. I wonder if they can detect the system serial number anytime it goes onto XBL. Because if they couldn't you may be able to simply set up a new silver account and this might work. Maybe you need a separate HD? This may also work for anyone who previously purchased a 360 console and for some reason held off on going onto XBL.

Received this in email. It's a holiday promotion from Micro$oft. For any of you folks purchasing or receiving a 360 this holiday season, use this promo code when registering your 360 to receive two "tokens" for free Xbox Live Arcade games in your email. They say you'll receive the response by Feb 15, 2007.

As far as I can tell from the email, you only need to register your Xbox360. They say it has to be purchased between certain dates, but there's no way they could tell when you bought your system. You should be able to take advantage of this.

Thanks for combining the threads. I would have found this one if the search function wasn't crapping out :)

Dumbass, if you bought the system last week and it got bricked, you could still return it.

Alucard400
12-06-2006, 03:10 PM
it's a long drive to irvine. i also really dont have much of a need for playing online and updating. I got the system solely on playing games. This is why i'm giving the middle finger to Sony's PS3. it's only a 7 day return/exchange policy in Microcenter and i'm already on the 11th day. Yeah, call people a dumbass. I hate how people are such asses to others online just because they're in front of a computer. You'd get socked in the face for talking like that in person. But I guess i shouldn't be surprised. Assholes like you are so common on the internet and unhelpful in the forums.

Wolfpup
12-06-2006, 03:17 PM
The system will get updated automatically sooner or later when you use a new game. I'd just do it now while it's under warranty and you can probably still exchange it at the store.

I know what you mean about jerks though. I've been amazed by the responses I've gotten on a thread on here.

EDIT: Oh, and I wouldn't worry much about it wrecking your system. I don't think that's very common. I mean basically the power would have to go out, or there'd have to be a problem with the flash RAM for it to fail. It's probably pretty uncommon for it to cause problems.

Alucard400
12-06-2006, 09:36 PM
The chances of it having issues after the fall update is pretty small. It's a september 9 2006 model. I just dont want to take the risk. The exchange and return period for microcenter is only 7 days. I will still have warranty with MS yes, but I dont want the hassle of having to pack the thing and sending it off to MS and spend some money for shipping in addition to not having a console to play with. I have Gears of War, and that is a recent game which didn't force me to update.

The fall update was supposedly for having the system output 1080p. But I've heard that the system actually gets some issues with the GPU changing drivers or a part of the hardware overheating resulting in the rings of death. I'm not really sure, but I did not bother to read 64 pages(over 1800 replies) on this one thread in the xbox.com forums. This special topic was pulled by MS and was specially moved into the wish/feedback forum away from support as if MS is trying to cover up this fiasco. There has already been people filing a class action suit. Try going to the forums and post anything relating to the FALL UPDATE, and it won't last a few minutes on the support forums. It's very heavily moderated around this time.

I dont really see any XBL arcade games I really want. And all I want to do is play off line for now. I dont really plan on getting the gold live account until next year, so I'm ok for now. By then, there will be a really good update that is well checked in QA standards. MS just doesn't want to be embarrassed by Sony after trying to trumph them with their 1080p claims.

reallynotnick
12-06-2006, 09:51 PM
^They fixed the fall update so there is nothing to worry about now, go ahead and update it. I had mine bricked by the update, returned it and after they fixed it, it updated fine.

I think I will have to try this now that I have a different console with a different Serial #, but I have to make a new xbox live account?

screwkick
12-06-2006, 09:51 PM
I just purchased an XBOX 360 this past Saturday, and the Fall update bricked my system. I took it back to Gamerush and got my money back.

If you check out the forums on xbox.com, you'll see that this is not an isolated incident. It has hapened to many people.

The chances of it having issues after the fall update is pretty small. It's a september 9 2006 model. I just dont want to take the risk. ...

For what it's worth, my system (which I recently acquired through the Overstock deal, thanks to CAG) has a September 7 2006 manufacture date, and I have not encountered any issues after downloading the fall update.

sorry to make this off topic. I just want to help people here get informed so we're all happy about our xbox 360 purchases. here is the link to the BIG thread in xbox.com forums:

http://forums.xbox.com/65/7864073/ShowPost.aspx#7864073

the update was in the last day of October.
you have a september 7 system, that's cool. But That won't make me still try it, because it could be hardware specific. like, it' could be because you got a samsung disc drive while mine is another brand. There is still no evidence of what the real cause is and where specifically. I do know it's mostly from launch and first few months systems in 2005. It's easy for me to be patient about it and pass on this 4 free xbox live arcade games. but It's not easy for people who have been really really pissed off at Microsoft. I'm sure some of you know what it's like to go through hassles and frustration when dealing with trying to get a warranty repair from a company. In this case, the company with an update online is the one that breaks your system and forces you to pay 140$ to repair it. At the same time, they're trying to cover up their BIG BOO BOO by hiding the thread from the support forum section.

I'm hoping MS will have the major fix by january which is around the time this special promotion will end. I still wouldn't mind having the 4 free xbox live arcade games.

allyourblood
12-06-2006, 10:34 PM
i guess i'm okay then. this thread is the first time i've heard about it, and amongst several friends and family, none of us has had any problems. i have a launch-week unit, as does my brother. guess we dodged a bullet. thanks for the info, 400.

reallynotnick
12-06-2006, 11:35 PM
I am 95% sure the problem was that the systems did not have the spring update on them already as it was people like myself getting old consoles back from repair (they send you a different console) or people picking up old ones off the shelves.

They have now said they have fixed the problem with the update and all should work fine. I don't know how it bricked screwkick's and I would out right call him a lier if it were not for his gamer tag.

I wonder what Microsoft will do if their update kills an out of warrenty 360? You can't refuse the update, so it seems like they should take responsibility for it...

You can't avoid the update though. Sooner or later you will get it, either from connecting it online, or from playing a new game that installs it. You might as well install it sooner IMO (and installing it from the net might be safer as it could be a newer version than one from a game).

Not to go off topic or anything, but how do you tell which drive is in your X360? Been wondering about this whole Live issue and which consoles are the ones with the most issues. Mine is from April, 2006 and working great so far. That said, I haven't signed up for XBOX Live yet...

I know the occasional bricking occurs. but you really do have to get the update. Eventually games will force you to, as with PSP firmware. Besides that, the update adds lots of awesome features. If something happens, just take it back. I'll save you the worry though: nothing will happen. Just do it. I've never had any problems with updates myself - and BTW there was one last week, so that's the most recent one.

Actually, I hadn't signed up since I didn't have the wireless network adapter. That said, it just arrived this last afternoon and it took me about an hour and a half or so to install it. Had to get a new firmware for my router. All in all though, I am on Live now...

Tried to register for the free games but the site wasn't working. Will try again soon! :)

This got somewhat off-topic. I have a few comments on-topic:

First, the offer is legit. I got two emails directly from Microsoft on the issue. So, any of you that were worried shouldn't be.

Second, I'm going to try this, although I don't technically fall into the correct timeframe.

Third, those of you getting blank screens aren't alone. I too, am having the same problem. And I think it is because their system is getting hit incredibly hard. I received the same screen a few nights ago when signing up for the Halo 3 beta. Methinks when that dies down, the site will work again.

Oh, and the emails I got had codes "XBXNG2" for three free XBLA games and "XBXNG4" for two free XBLA games.

Well, the email says "Microsoft approved" games, or something like that. I would bet they provide a small list to choose from, and you take the best of them. (Game like Lumines probably wouldn't be on that list, since they are more expensive.)

Anyway, there's something totally messed up here and I doubt it's part of the whole Halo 3 beta deal going on. There's no way MS should be having this amount of issues for well over a week. I am starting to think this is their way of not having to pay out, so to speak. How much do you wanna bet it'll work after the expiration date... :D

Seriously though, I guess we'll just have to keep trying to get through and bother them by email if it doesn't start to work soon. :bouncy:

I am getting a new 360 this Christmas, and we already have it and it was bought in between the time period. And I was wondering...

Since I already have an xbox live account (for my regular xbox), I am just going to be transfering that over. Now it says it has to be a new xbl account, so could I just use the 48 hour trial I get, download the games, and then cancel that account. Or even better, could I make a silver account, and then get the games on that?

Wolfpup
12-13-2006, 11:43 AM
The problem is the games are tied to your account.

eastx
12-13-2006, 02:37 PM
The games being tied to your temporary Live account are not a big deal as long as the system doesn't break. Any content purchased on any account on a console is accessible to all users of that console. Also, I'm pretty sure you can just make it a Silver account and not worry about the 48-hour trial. I'm more worried about this deal ever working...

Yeah, but then the games are tied to your console, which IMO makes them worthless ('course they are free in this case...).

Also you'll lose your Live account if you don't log into the corresponding email often enough. That happened to me over the summer.

Basically so far I *hate* how Microsoft and Nintendo have handled their download services, and I'm guessing Sony will be no better.

I've no idea why someone doesn't just copy the Apple model, which at least works as long as you've got an internet connection available to authorize or deauthorize a computer.

At least when you pay 10 bucks for a game with microsoft you get original content, instead of some 10+ year old game that isnt any different than when the game came out. **cough wii vc**cough**cough**

You can make a passport account with an e-mail other than a hotmail e-mail (as I have), in which case this could not cause a deactivation. There may be other reasons they would deactivate an account, but I don't know what they would be.

I called CS and was on the phone for an hour trying to find out anything.

First I was told it was a scam site and they have no such promo.(this of course after I got transfered from India back to tech which only took 20 minutes)

Then I got told it didn't matter if you registered on xbox.com it wouldn't effect the promo site as you would just simple register there as well.

Then they figured out at long last that it really was a promo they had going on.

And that they would try and get the site working in a couple hours(about 10 hours ago now). It was pretty well a waste of an hour.

fyi CSR Mentioned code XBXNG100 for 2 games...(nothing about 4 games though)

I used the XBXNG102 Code. Here's hoping it actually works for the 4 free games. Hopefully, MS will come out and let us know which if any of the games won't be selectable. I am just about to buy several anyway and will hold off on the expensive ones, if they are applicable to this deal.

Don't care if those are a few of the choices myself, but have most of the worthwhile ones already, including Geometry Wars...

Either way, I am sure I can find something I would like. Most likely I wouldn't want to pay 1200 for Lumines Live! or RoboBlitz, so if you could use the tokens for those and the latest release, Novadrome, I'd be happy. That said, I'd take Dig Dug, Gauntlet, Pac-Man and Frogger, no problem! Though, here's hoping the points needed to make the purchases aren't taken into consideration by MS. There's many at the 800 MS points range I would love to grab! Assuming the 1200 point games are off limits. Crossing my fingers they are not! :D

see, but where's the big delay in the emails? i assume no one has gotten one yet? i wonder if we can re-regsiter with the 4 game one, or perhaps that would disqualify you.

anyhow, between this and having no idea when i got the free points card (6 days on the true.com free trial and heard nothing back) i would be nice to get something now so i can use, since it would be silly to buy points between this and the points, just wish one of them would actually be sent to me.

"just so ppl know, NOT everyone will get 2 free games, its a promotional contest"

Not everyone will be getting the games? Seems like MS changed the rules during halftime, yet again. Either that of that poster is full of crap...

Yes. The catch is that games you "buy" through X-Box Live can only be played on either the original 360 system, or if you're logged in to the Live service on another system (in other words, it requires both that you have an internet connection to play them, and that the service is still running on anything but the original machine).

I wonder how people who aren't eligible will find out that's the case. I also wonder how people who know they are eligible but don't hear anything, or are told they aren't, can take up the issue with MS. I get the feeling many people are going to get word they are out of luck, just for the fact that many are signing up that said they aren't eligible, and as far as I know there isn't a way to check that out on MS' part that would not accidentally pass over some that shouldn't be...

Here's hoping MS doesn't drop the ball!

spincut
01-16-2007, 11:00 PM
i dunno but i registered again with a different coupon but the same serial, since when i initially did it i didnt have a gamertag yet and i didnt know if they message the tokens straight to your XBL or email.

so i registered again, although this time it just said in a box that my windows live ID was not associated with a gamertag, at this point this is incorrect but i registered anyway, i guess if it really mattered they wouldnt let you do it (despite them saying they would "verify" to see if the entry was valid later).

still i'm not sure if this will ever happen (at least not for me, i registered once and i still didnt get an email about technical difficulties).

As long as they don't pick the games you get, you know, since they would pick what you own already most likely, or at least the ones no one wants... :D

Seriously though, I don't care too much about the wait, but I hope the list of games one can choose is worth the wait. Also, I have to wonder why the long wait? Unless they got way too many registrations, though they always wanted us to wait the month even before this came to be well known, I have no idea why it should take a month to start sending out an email whether we are entitled to the games or not. Heck, you should have been notified if you weren't the moment you signed up, if not within a week or so.

It seems a bit odd, if you ask me! :)

I haven't bought any XBLA games yet because I'm waiting to see which ones MS sends. I have downloaded a bunch of trials, and already know which ones I want- so if I get any of those, thats just gonna be gravy. :)

I enjoy the Heavy Weapon demo, but haven't bought it yet because I'm waiting for my 4 free games.

One question though: the one that Microsoft advertises is for 2 free Live Arcade games with purchase of 360, then someone (somehow) found a code for 4 free games instead of 2. So do you think the 4 free games deal will go through?

I sure wish they would start sending out the free codes or whatever they are supposed to send. For some reason I think we will all get nothing.

Dude, they said they will send out the codes between Feb 12th and 15th. It is the 9th. Chill...:cold:

The reason I think they delayed it, is because it ended Jan 15th. If you were on a free 30 day trial, it'd most likely be up by now. I'm sure they want to make sure the codes are going to people that paid for Gold.

Unless these codes don't work when I enter them =(

yep i got my email, i guess they didnt count my second attempt to register with the 4 game code (why did they have multiple codes anyway?! :() so i only got the two game.

i could have sworn that you get a token for any free game, or at least a limited selection.

so i'm surprised that some people were right, and they indeed gave specific games.

i got Joust and Frogger.

still both games are classic and actually i'm really stoked i got joust, still there were other games i would have liked as well (actually i'm wondering they randomly select them, or if every 2 game entry gets these, in which case i wonder what the other two are for the 3 and 4 game guys, so i guess just post what they gave you and i can see whether i should be jealous or not..... Uno would have been my top choice though since i dont have it yet and didnt even realize they gave it away previously).

Download your free Xbox Live® Arcade games.

You bought, registered and signed up. Now it’s our turn. With over 100 high-def games, we’re giving you some right now—free. The next generation keeps its gamers happy. Just follow these steps to download:

1. Turn on your Xbox 360™ and sign in to Xbox Live.
2. Highlight and select “Xbox Live Marketplace.”
3. Select “Redeem Code.”
4. Enter a code and download the game.

Robotron:

Frogger:

Joust:

Repeat steps 3-4 for each code to download all of your free games. When you’re done, check out the demos, trailers and movies. There’s plenty of fun to have, even when you’re not playing a game.

Questions about redeeming codes? Go to Customer Support on Xbox.com.

Got it.
Looking forward to Frogger & Joust.

Already have Robotron.

I got the 3 games (Frogger, Joust, Robotron).

When I signed up, I never saw confirmation that there was a 4-game code (it seemed like a rumor), so I used the 3 game code to be safe.

I guess perhaps there was no 4-game code.

I thought maybe the codes for less games would have different games as well.

Not complaining about free games though (and now I can spend points without fear of duplicating).
