So, I missed out on Nintendo's sale of component cables last week. Thought there might be 3rd party ones available at retail - struck out there too. But, unless I'm mistaken, weren't 1st party cables supposed to be available on-line at bestbuy.com, circuitcity.com, ebgames.com, and gamestop.com? (We'll ignore Kaplan's comments about them being available at B&M store onthe 19th - I know Ninty's saying mid-December.) What's going on here? I'm not really bothered with composite when playing Wii Sports or Super Monkey Ball, but for Zelda, darnit, I want component before I really delve into the game!
Were there any announcements about this that I've somehow missed?

Yeah, Nintendo mail order really seems to be the only game in town at this point. I was fortunate to get in on the initial batch and will be getting mine today. I would just go ahead and order from them, as I suspect that late November batch is the earliest opportunity you'll have to get them anywhere (first OR third party), save maybe eBay. But who knows.

I'm pretty sure all that talk ended up being BS. 12/15 looks like that will be when the cables go for sale at least online.
I set up my email address to be notified by Best Buy when they get the React component cables in case those go on sale before the Nintendo brand ones.
Apparently it won't email you, it is just a Wish List.
The React cables are going to be $24 so once BB gets them in stock, you can score them for $19 after GGC.

No 3rd party cables are available. Only Nintendo. Only through Nintendo.com. Backordered.

i saw a sign for Wii Component Cables and 3rd Party Wii Component Cables at bestbuy on friday when i grabbed a wiimote, nunchuk, and tony hawk. but they were either sold out or not even put out. the Wii Component Cables were $59.99 (!) and the 3rd party ones were $34.99 (maybe it was $29.99).

Yeah, I preordered the ones on Play Asia. It seems to imply they're first-party. Here's hoping.

Stupid question, but what is the difference between componant and composite cables anyway? I gather that component cables make things look better (hence this thread), but can anyone post screenshots comparing the difference?
Also, does it matter on the quality of your TV? Because I don't have a hi-def TV. In fact, I've been gaming for years on a crappy old 13 inch TV, but it's always suited me fine.

Best Buy's will not. But Circuit City's will!

With component, the picture is sharper and more defined, and the colors are better.

So if I order from Nintendo now can I definatley get the batch that ships the 28th or is it too late for that?

That still doesn't answer my question about wehther or not you need an HDTV to take advantage of them (in fact, the article implies that you do, but doesn't specify).
Also, are there any more side-by-side screenshot comparisons? That one was really close up and didn't give me a good idea how it would look mid-game.
So far it looks like the difference is akin to that between RE4 on the GC vs on the PS2. The GC version is clearly better looking when compared right next to each other, but if you only owned a PS2 it would still look mighty fine on its own. But then again I'm a bit near-sighted, so I guess my eyes are less sensitive to things like that.

Since your gaming on a "crappy old 13 inch TV" you probably don't have component inputs. The composite input is the Yellow port (with red and white ports for audio) and component is red, green, and blue ports (with red and white ports for audio).

Composite = 480i
Component = 480p - 1080i

Composite = 480i
Component = 480p - 1080i
Correction: Component = 480i - 1080p.
Even in 480i component looks much better than composite. Even S-Video looks much better than composite.

At least you have the option of composite... my TV didnt even come with an input lower than S-Video (which is actually in a worse state of availability to the component -- backorder for that puts it into February) so I can't play it at all until the backorder catches up to me.
According to the nintendo rep I talked to, they're looking to have all of the current (as of last night) orders for component cables filled (i.e. shipped) by the middle of next week. Get your orders in ASAP if you want component anytime in the near future...

Nobody should ever use composite cables unless they have some archaic POS tv that doesn't have S-Video. S-Video should be a minimum--HUGE upgrade over composite on any TV.
I don't understand what Nintendo's problem is with these damn cables. Shipping component cables to stores on time should not be rocket science!!!
