I have two groups of friends in my high school.
Group 1 is my "main" group of friends who only play Madden or don't play video games at all. Their weekend consists of playing football on Friday, getting drunk on Saturday, and watching football on Sunday. We'll call them the casual gamers.
Group 2 is a group of gamers who I won't call hardcore gamers, but they're gamers. They're mainly into Halo 2 and World of Warcraft--the accessible gamers.
Well, I decided to invite them all over to hang out and play Wii/Xbox 360. I had the accessible gamers over on Sunday and the casual gamers over on Monday. Keep in mind neither of them had tried either console in the past.
Sunday was way different than I expected. Group 2 came over, all hyped about playing the Wii and never said a word about Gears of War. Inspecting and messing around with the console, they were really pumped to start the Wii up. But when they put in Wii Sports, they were a little less than enthralled. They weren't into the controls and using the Wiimote. One of them said, "I workout after school because I don't want to get fat. I play games and I just want to sit down and relax". No biggy. They decided to try out Excite Truck and Zelda. Even though they were sitting in chairs, they still weren't into it. So they decided to try Gears of War. They were so impressed with it that we played online for about four hours, and some asked to stay longer (I had homework to finish up though).
Monday was exactly as I expected it. Everyone wanted to try out Gears of War. Each of them picked it up and even though they loved the chainsaw animation and the blood, they thought the game was just too hard. They seemed to really like the graphics, but they just couldn't get the hang of it. Cautiously, they turned on the Wii and fumbled the remotes awkwardly when picking the sport they wanted to play in Wii Sports. They eventually decided on Tennis. After awhile, all of them got the hang of it and didn't even want to change sports. After some coaxing, I got them to try out bowling and eventually boxing, and each had them more hyped than the last. While they weren't into golf, they loved baseball and bowling the most. After trying Excite Truck, they were hooked. They really liked how it was like a wheel and the simplicity of it. Two of the guys said they would buy a Wii today if they could get one.
So I think Nintendo has done it. At least in my experience, they've reached out to non-gamers and found what they like. I think that some of the more regular or accessible gamers still want their 360, however. They want online play and shiny graphics with all that tactical shooting and blood and gore they can get.
I just find it funny that none of them said a word about PS3. No one asked if I had one.
Hope you guys find it interesting.
