I know people are downloading updates and stuff online so do you need these to use the Wii? My router is a piece and I can't get it to work.

No, I'm playing without wireless until I get back to my place after Thanksgiving. The onlything internet is used for at the moment is Mii transfers, Email, Updates to the console (patches) and VC.

These patches aren't necessary to have?

They aren't necessary to play games on the Wii, but in order to use some of the additional functionality, they are necessary. Specifically, SD card usage, amongst other things.

Hmm how do you even hook the console to the internet? I have a wireless router that I use for my computer so how would I connect it to that?

Well, for me at this moment, I don't have access to wireless, and it's not affecting my play at all.

Turn on the wii go to internet connections click wireless and scan for connections.
