To make one in windows just press the "Print Screen" button that is to the right of F12. Then you can use your fav graphic program to start a new file and paste the image which is in the clipboard to the program. Save as a gif or jpg. Find a place to upload it and display it here. You can use the CAG gallery if you have to but you will not be able to display it inline in this thread. Anyways...

No desktop background - I need all the RAM I
can get to keep 40 browser tabs open at once.

Besides, I always work with maximized windows.

I have a little collection of wallpaper images, I just never use them as wallpapers.

You should open the bitmap in a graphics program. You can use MS PAINT and then resize and then SAVE AS...you can then choose a new file format like JPG or GIF.

It's my website mascot, Beta. I draw my own BGs for my comp.

This was my old one:
http://lensflare.ecau.net/misc/desktop042904.jpg

As for Busy desktops, I like having my games and most used icons there so I dont have to hunt through menus to find them because I really hate the way XP handles file folders, I really could stand to loose a few but I never know when I'll need them so I just made a new image that wouldnt be obscured as much. I keep some of my lesser stuff like FTP, Spybot and antivirus in the start menu.

Alpha2, I have to say, I really like your artwork.

I like my desktops completely clean - I put all of my icons in the QuickLaunch toolbar. And a lot of the programs I use just stay in the start menu's "recent programs" list, so i don't need dozens of icons. My desktop:

If I find a piece of art that I want to look at, I don't want a bunch of hideous icons covering it up. I use quick launch to quickly launch my programs. And all of my files I keep on a separate harddrive from my Windows installation, so it's not like I'd store them on the desktop, no matter how often I use them

Alpha2

I used to use the quick launnch bar but it kept taking up so much space on the bottom so when I'd have like 4 or more internet windows or applications open it was a bitch and half to switch between them because the bars would be too small for the labels to say which was what...

defender

Yeah I like a nice looking desktop image but to be fair...how often does your computer sit with just the desktop?

I like artwork on my desktop and then I place all my icons around that. I try not to get an image thats too overbearing on the desktop because then I cant see any icons..or the image. As you see from my desktop image...I keep Brooke clean.

All you have to do is drag and drop into the quicklaunch toolbar.

I agree...which is why I keep my quick launch toolbar as short as possible with only programs I use on a daily basis.

redgopher, how do you get that "crash on loading" screen to come up (like in your gallery)? there was a program that i used to change the start button label and startup/shutdown screens for windows 98, but i can't even remember what the name of it was anymore.

Alpha2
06-26-2004, 05:44 PM
I like the way Redgopher is using his quicklaunch, thats acutally the first time I've ever seen it like that! I just dont like the way it floats though, too easy for me to push off the screen or resize by accident.

I think I was spoiled by my old Mac at work with OS 8, I literally had 3 icons on the desktop and thats all I ever needed because the way the file structure worked gave me easier access and less needless diging to get to applications I needed, it was rare that anything was more than 2 or 3 clicks away. Plus it was more pleasing to the eye.

Yo redgopher...I really want to know how you got that box of little icons on your desktop. I would LOVE to do that.

It is a program made by Aladdin Systems (known for StuffIt) called DragStrip. You can download it from their site, and if you're.. um.. less moral than some of us... you can get a serial for it. It's a great program. I have it really minimalized, so you can have like tabs for lots of pages of icons, its really sweet.

I didnt need a program.

First make sure your taskbar is NOT locked...you can right click the taskbar for that.

Then turn on the Quick Launch which again is a right click on the task bar...

Now drag the quick launch off the taskbar (you do this by clickin the left side of the quick launch text)

Now just drag any shortcuts into the quick launch window and place it where you want to..you can resize it too.

I arrange the hell out of my Start menu so I don't have to hunt for programs and I don't have a cluttered desktop.

Of course, I have worked on a few machines for people where they had so many icons on the desktop, the desktop would actually scroll so you could see all the icons.

Here's mine on my Win98 desktop. I open most of my programs through the Start menu or via keyboard shortcuts, so I took the minimalist approach. I love that picture; it's so peaceful.

http://members.cox.net/thomassonw/desktop.jpg

On my XP laptop, I just use the default Gateway background because it's a Tablet PC; I rotate the screen to portrait mode a lot, so if I use a background that isn't designed for it, it will look distorted.

HYDE

alongx: It's been a while, but you'll first need Resource Hacker

http://www.users.on.net/~johnson/resourcehacker/

Then you'll need to read tutorials from there. There's a few odd steps, like deleting the prefetch copy of explorer.exe among other things (if I remember correctly), so if you're squeamish about it, it's best to buy one of those style mod programs. I did my work with a hacked uxtheme.dll and resource hacker as I used the default windows theme as a base. Keep in mind though - every time you windows update, with this method, your explorer.exe gets hosed and you have to do it all over again. My start menu also says Hadoken vertically instead of Windows XP, also doable with Resource Hacker (it's a graphic replacement). Poke around here too http://www.themexp.org/

alongx: It's been a while, but you'll first need Resource Hacker

http://www.users.on.net/~johnson/resourcehacker/

Thanks for the tip! I appreciate it.

I think that was where I got it, it was months ago. Just scroll down the page a little.. there are a lot more selections.

a little off topic but i had to add that i see alot of win98 and 2000s here and i am suprised, i bearly switch to xp 2 months ago and 98se was much more haxxor resistant. its too bad that MS is taking it off their support list soon. (this nov so i was told)

I cannot imagine what give you that impression. The majority of compromises are to the IE code base. The bulk of this, holes and all, is identical for Win9x and the newer NT-derivatives. Also there were numerous Win9x holes in functions that are performed so differently under Win2K/XP that the same compromise didn't work there.

You don't see as much Win9x specific stuff because that field has been largely played out. There isn't any glory in reporting new holes in a product with a declining user base. Likewise there is little interest in performing new Win9x exploits because using that severely date platform is punishment in of itself. I was pretty happy when I first installed a Mephis Beta seven years ago and saw all the little improvements over Win95 but that was seven friggin' years ago. I'm far too attached to the greater sophistication and functionality of 2K/XP to ever go back. I don't spend a lot of time worrying about security holes except in terms of my more gullible clients. I've never had a successful compromise against any of my systems but I can't be there to protect against social engineering which exploits the single biggest unpatchable security hole.
