I'm new to fighting games and I was looking for one to play online. I already have some fighting games I've picked up cheap, but never gotten into, since I didn't have anyone to play with. Guilty Gear X2 for the ps2, soul calibur 2 for xbox, and a king of fighters game. I was thinking about Guilty Gear X2 reloaded for the xbox or DOA: Ultimate, which is on clearance at Target for $7.48. I've been thinking of doing this since my trial card for live expires in another month.

Guilty Gear X2 is a great game, but online... not so much. Majesco really fucked up because there's a delay between when you input a command and when something happens on the screen... so the game is completely unplayable online. Capcom Vs. SNK 2 works well online, but nobody plays that anymore unfortunately... DOA Ultimate works pretty well though... there's some lag issues, but you can at least play that one online.

DOA:U feels like the person is in the room next to you... if you have a good internet connection. If you have at least a 750kb down connection, DOA:U is an absolutely excellent online fighter and one that I highly recommend.

I picked up DOA: U this afternoon. I had to get it soon since clearance items that end in .48 are usually pulled the next time they do mark downs. It's too bad the 2 month trial that came with it expired in 2005. I would have liked the additional 2 free months.

Are there any other good online fighters I should be on the look out for?

Unfortunately, there just isn't a very wide selection of online fighting games. GGX2:Reload is a decent game, but I've yet to get into a lag free match online. Like Chacrana said, inputs feel lagged, so it's extremely difficult to pull off combos reliably. Street Fighter: Anniversary fared only slightly bettter, but still had the lagged input issue. It's worth picking up for cheap, but I dunno how large the online community is now.

DOA4 and SF2' are both great online fighters for the 360, but that's a different issue entirely. Quite frankly, the DOA series has done the best job with online play thus far.
