I think people realized spending more than retail for something that will eventually be restocked is asinine.

Either that or all the rich parents already got em.
I was at work today and alot of people said they bought PS3's off ebay recently. I doubt they will go up much more in price now, maybe a week or two before xmas a hundred or two so.

Looks like this guy lost money on his auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Tranferable-Insured-Sony-PlayStation-3-w-4-Games_W0QQitemZ280053326342QQihZ018QQcategoryZ6205 4QQtcZphotoQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Auction ended at $901.
PS3 20GB: $500
4 Games = $240
Extra Controller = $50
Best Buy Extended Warranty = $80
Total = $870, but he covered shipping and of course he probably paid about $60 in tax.

Unless you're rich and your kid has to have it. A local ice cream shop sells a half gallon for $13, while Eddy's is on sale all the time for 2/$5 at Meijer. Eddy's has Girl Scout cookie flavor! But yet the expensive store does gangbusters!
Look at a houshold object, there's a millionaire behind it. Their kids will spring it on them that they want a Wii 10 days before Christmas. That's why the Wii is so hard to get and will get harder closer to Christmas, kids have to have it. Technophiles want the PS3 and they have much better to spend their money on. The Wii is the Ipod of consoles. Except the Ipod was hot during the spring and summer and not the holidays.

Yeah I noticed even if you are throwing in a extra game or control with the system it dosent seem to be bringing up the price any. I have a 60GB system That I want to get rid of but I don't really want to go the ebay route.

Yeah I got $2000.00 for mine so I'm happy I put mine up when I did. I was originally going to keep mine but the lack of good games at launch and the ridiculous prices the first day I had to sell. I am happy they are tanking for the people who bought a bunch of systems as an investment though.

Its certainly no surprise to me why the PS3 is tanking on ebay....what do you do with it once you get it home?
You play Resistance.......and you watch one or two BD movies.....and thats it.
There are no killer app games out that you absolutely have to buy, and there likely wont be any of those for another month or two...so..whats the rush? Why pay a premium....
I'm still scratching my head wondering who's buying these things, and what they are doing with them besides installing linux ;)

I do agree that I enjoyed the 360s early days more then the PS3s early days so far.

Linux? Mostly to do....well mostly to do all the stuff you could do with any old PC without actually having the PC hooked up to your TV or whatever :P
WOW, PLAY MAME! :P
Anyhow.....the reason the 360 launch was more fun was because all the games were in HD, something we didn't have before...and secondly, there were actually 5-6 good titles to buy.
NFS: Most Wanted, PGR3, Perfect Dark, COD2, Kameo......all of them flew off the shelves and were actually fun games to play (yeah even PDZ if you took the time to get into it).....
With PS3 you get ports of games already out for 360....and like 3 new games, only 1 of which is any good...and a couple that are actually really *bad* (Gundam, etc).
I almost bought one when I had the chance...and then stopped myself and said "What the hell am I spending my $600 on again?" and dumped it out of my basket.
I dont do the Ebay scalping thing.....and nobody I know actually wanted the thing for $600 bones so.....<shrug>
Its nice to see that a 60gig one is selling for only $1k on ebay right now though...I'd be too worried about getting ripped off if I was a buyer OR a seller on ebay right now.

Someone once told me, and I don't think it will connect to this thread, you can price a candy bar for .25 cents, and it wouldn't sell nearly as much unless you had priced the same bar as "4 for $1.00".

Profits sure have dropped alot, it's not suprising though considering the paltry launch. And unlike with the ps2 they actually have stiff competition from the xbox 360 and the Wii so people are willing to wait for thier ps3s

That's all it takes to not get ripped off. Profit-wise I'd wait until it was closer to X-mas, maybe time it so it ends on a Sunday (more people at home). Set a reserve if you really want to cover your ass.

I think prices will go up 1 week before xmas. People are still waiting for the second or third shipment and then once those are gone then they will go to ebay to buy a ps3. My estimate is $1500 for a 60 gig console and $1000 for a 20 gig. The # of units on ebay has decreased to 13,000 units as compared to 35,000 a couple of weeks ago.

It won't go up before christmas. The 360 prices didn't go up. The price will continue to drop until ps3s are readily available.
The only people willing to spend $1500 on a ps3 are the people who can afford to, and they most likely would have already bought one by the week before christmas. The people holding out for more shipments are probably the people who only want to pay retail and won't go $900 above msrp or they would have already done so before.
If you are one of those parents who must get whatever the kid wants for christmas, they're not going to wait til the last minute and risk the chance that their precious kid doesn't get what they want.

Honestly, folks - I think it's more down to simple economics. With the PS3, we figure that around 40,000 units were on eBay in the first few days (the number I hear a lot) out of 120,000 shipped. Basically, a fuck-ton of scalpers got in early and there were tons. Everyone who was willing to pay crazy money has one.
Why did this happen? I'd say the PS2 and the Xbox360 launches did it. The PS3 has had the heaviest scalping to date, and the market had the predictable response to saturation - the bottom fell out.
I have a PS3, and I'm enjoying it. But I'll admit that 'having a PS3' is part of the satisfaction, and that I'm playing Blast Factor more than Resistance.

You will see a slight spike, probably the week before Christmas, as some parents begin to get desperate after not having been able to find a PS3. But that is it, and the spike will likely be minimal.

In this case the seller was scammed by a buyer who used a fake bid to bump up the price to the point where no one else would bid and then pulled the bid in the last 30 seconds. If you look at this buyer's other auctions, they have done the same on at least 2 other auctions (including one for an Xbox 360). I did an analysis of it in the "E-Bay scalping thread". In one case he must have missed the window for cancelling and thus just didn't pay for the item. Then he made a new account (used here) since the other had a -1 rating. It is interesting stuff - that is an exploit ebay needs to shut down ;).

Auction ended at $901.
PS3 20GB: $500
4 Games = $240
Extra Controller = $50
Best Buy Extended Warranty = $80
Total = $870, but he covered shipping and of course he probably paid about $60 in tax.

And don't forget, Cheapy, he probably paid $40 in ebay fees and $30 or so in PayPal fees. And I doubt he shipped it for less than $50.
I think there's more going on here than just everyone trying to cash in on it. Didn't a ton of people sell 360's last year? They were in greater supply but I think they sold well through Jan or Feb, right? I think the lack of games, the higher overall price, and probably other issues are contributing factors - many being bad omens for Sony. I was going to pick one up in March or April when I assumed they would become plentiful, but the lack of upscaling means my shiny new $600 HD gaming box would play most games in wonderful 480p on my 1080i (Sony!) HDTV. No thanks - I can get that with the Wii (once I get the component cables :bomb:). I'm actually considering getting a 360 as a result, and I have had almost no interest in it to this point (save Oblivion). I just want to have SOME HD goodness on my HDTV (never had anything over 480p on the thing in the 3 years I've had it ;)).

I didn't really pay very close attention to the Xbox 360 launch, but I didn't get the impression that there were as many people buying it specifically to sell on eBay. While I'm sure it happened quite a bit with the Xbox 360 as well, it seems like there are a lot more people who are total non-gamers trying to cash in on the PS3 this time around. Just looking at the "hall of shame" thread makes you realize that most of the people selling these things know nothing about games and are only jumping on the bandwagon in hopes of making some easy money.

I'm thinking too that so many people bought it for eBay that it became worthless.
Plus my Best Buy has restocked the Playstation 3 THREE TIMES so far since launch a week ago.
But please people, don't support the eBay jerks. I mean if you can get it for below retail and it's legit, fine, but don't pay a premium or you're just encouraging this behavior.

I honestly don't understand why people would put games in the auction to try and add value. The console is the item that is scarce. The games are available and easy to find, and I haven't seen a single auction where the games have raised the price. By adding 2 games, you are basically cutting your profits by $120.
Reality's Fringe
11-27-2006, 05:07 PM
I tried to tell people that this would happen. When you have a game system that is $600 the demand WILL be implicitly lower. Add to that a $200 difference between it and its closet competitor, and you have a recipie for significantly lower demand regardless of brand strength(especially considering the brand strength of Microsoft). THEN add all of these people thinking they're going to make "like 10,000" and you have a recipie for massive disappointment.

Just stupidity, really. They think that by offering the "ultimate bundle" with 3 extra controllers and 6 games and the Best Buy extended warranty (I actually saw some like this) they are going to get someone to spend $5000+, but it just doesn't work that way. Bundling things almost never works to the seller's advantage, especially if the extra things in the bundle are readily available.
Rimmit
11-27-2006, 06:03 PM
Bundling will almost never raise the auction, except lately w/ the wii, accessories are raising auction prices, as the accessorries are harder to get then the games.
I'll say this again, as I've said a thousand times. PRICES ARE NOT GOING BACK UP!!!!!!!! Highest time to sell was w/o a doubt, the morning of launch, when I got 3,700 for mine. And for all those wondering, this was legit, I have the money in the bank account, and have contacted the buyer, who was happy w/ his purchase. Through some miracle of god, I was not scammed.
Honestly, the demand for a ps3 is waaaay lower then that of a wii. The wind got knocked out of the ps3's sails by the wii, and that is partially contributing to the ebay fallout. The item kiddies want this xmas more then anything is the wii. Just standing at target, eb, bb, etc. around the video games section has kids pointing saying how much they want a wii. They'll say, the ps3 graphics are pretty, but in the end they want a wii, and parents will push them that direction too b/c of price.
PRICES WILL NOT RISE!!!! The 360's Didn't rise, and that was when it was the only next gen system on the market. If you haven't sold your ps3 by now. Quite frankly you've missed any reasonable amount of profit for the effort unless you just walked in and picked it off the shelf. Right about now you might net 200-300 per sell if you're lucky.

You will see a slight spike, probably the week before Christmas, as some parents begin to get desperate after not having been able to find a PS3. But that is it, and the spike will likely be minimal.
I doubt this will be the case.......parents aren't buying PS3's for kids at $600 a pop when every game except 2-3 of them area already available on the easy-to-find-and-$200-cheaper Xbox 360.....its scalpers and enthusiasts buying PS3 right now, even most gamers are taking a side seat until a few games are out for the thing. THe 1080i issue has put the brakes on alot of potential purchases as well.
They may be tougher to find on store shelves, but they wont be pulling out the big-bucks stops right before xmas unless Sony releases a bunch of must have Games for the thing...otherwise..why spend more than retail for a PS3 with no spectacular games or BD movies??? Just to say "I have one!" I guess.
Since most of the "good stuff" isn't expected to ship until MARCH, that means lots and lots and lots of time for store stocks to build up. 360s were easily available by March and they were in much higher demand last year.
I agree that if you wanted to scalp, day 1 was the only day to do it.....by now auctions are going lower and lower...with no real reason for them to spike before xmas at this rate.
PS3 has been completely overshadowed at this point by the Wii.......

Most parents don't care if the Xbox 360 is cheaper. If their kids want a PS3, they will try to get their kids a PS3, and most don't realize the Xbox can do the same things for $200 less. No doubts about it, there will be small spike in prices right before Christmas. Agreed, though, the Wii has totally overshadowed it, and it should...it is a superior gaming system in every way except graphics/performance, which matter less to the masses.

Dunno, disagree. This arguement is as old as the hills...parents do take notice when the price of the gift starts to pass the "half a grand" limit.
You're also going to have to take into account that parents who just LAST year shelled out $400+ for an Xbox 360 system are now being asked to shell out $600 more? ARe there any hardcore kids out there who didn't go 360 and only waited for PS3? A few I'm guessing, but not many.....not when its their parents money they're spending, anyhow.
I'm guessing that landslide of weak parents with weaker pocketbooks isn't coming in droves this year.

If there is a spike it will be like 50 dollars. It will be virtually unoticeable. The wii has taken the US by storm, and at this point has stolen ALL of the ps3 thunder. The complete unavailability of the system combined w/ absolutely no WOW factor kind of kill the system.
The wii has the WOW factor of the immersive gaming experience, plus the fact that the controller works way better then I ever imagined it would. I'm not a big fan of Zelda on teh system as the controls imo feel kind of clunky and imprecise at times, but wii sports in some of teh most fun I've had on a system in a long time.
After seeing Resistance and Gears of war, both in high def, I must admit, for the first time ever, I was actually wowed by the graphics, and it was not the graphics in resistance. Gears of WArs had just amazing graphics, with far advanced texturing and overall polygon use then resistance. Albeit resistance is a launch game, it lacks any WOW factor. Gears of War just by seeing it could sell 360's, and this is coming from the biggest xbox hater ever. Just look at my gaming collection on IGN. I own a whopping zero xbox games, but I must admit, it is tempting to pick up a 360 just based on price, and the amazing graphics, which imo will likely keep pace w/ the ps3, at least to the average observer.

It won't go up before christmas. The 360 prices didn't go up. The price will continue to drop until ps3s are readily available.
The reality is that prices will go up. My guess like I said before will be $1500 for a 60 gig console.
We are down to 12,000 units on ebay and I am estimating around 10,000 units a week before xmas. Folks will pay an extra $400 for the 60 gig, just wait and see.

There are a ton of people who aren't able to sell on ebay currently though, what's to stop them from just relisting the weeks before christmas?

so if i dont like ps3 i dont like variety? News to me.
despite owning so many old gen systems and games including a ps1, game gear, nes, gameboy color, super nes, sega gen +32x, etc I can clearly see that in not liking one single system I am just a biased bastard....o well /sarcasm/end/
Big scoop!

I tried to sell mine on release day and it just got buried. By the time anyone saw it, the price tanked. I relisted it Saturday and it sold with BIN for $995 on Sunday. That was with 2 games and an extra controller. In all seriousness, I was just happy to be rid of it (I thought about returning it to the store where I got it, but since I paid cash, that would have been next to impossible).
eBay had a lot of restrictions on selling, one picture, have to show the receipt, etc and then Paypal was a major pain in the ass. The changed my status to "limited" and I can't do shit with it.
I had to fax them a copy of my "supplier" data, tracking number and some address verification for a credit check. When I called them to bitch them out, they told me that they were doing that to everyone selling a PS3 (although this was the first I had heard of it). My account has limited access until they CALL the buyer to verify receipt. What a load of crap! What the hell is the signature confirmation for? I can't move ANY money from my Paypal account (buy or transfer out) until all of this is done and they tell me it may be two weeks or more.
I know that this is what I deserve for eBay whoring, but the bottom line is that I made about $180. It wasn't worth the effort and I won't get my money for weeks until Paypal gets off their lazy ass and gets around to resolving my complaint.
I swear, this is the last time I try to sell a console on eBay. I kept my PS2 and 360 when I should have sold and all I wanted to do this time was get enough to pay for my Wii and I didn't even get that.
Lesson learned.

I could just say wishful thinking or delusional, but I will add: you think you are the only one holding out for a spike? The numbers available will climb again the week before xmas and nullify any "spike." This is what happens when 9/10 people buy this to sell it.
