Anyone have this one? It looks pretty cool and I kind of want to pick it up. Any opinions?

It's pretty cool, a lot of people liken it to Shenmue, but I haven't played Shenmue so I couldn't say. But it's a pretty good gangster beat em up with a decent story.

fucking awesome

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this game. It definetly has flaws but if you pick it up you won't regret it.

I must agree that it's awesome. I really enjoyed this game. If you can look past its flaws (mediocre voice acting, lock on button useless) then you'll really enjoy it. It has an awesome story and is really fun to play.

I'm a pretty big Shenmue fan but I must admit that I didn't like this game one bit.

Out of curiosity what did you not like about it?

I have a friend who is a huge Shenmue fan, but like you doesn't like Yakuza (granted he only played the tutorial fight at the beginning and then said it sucked).

I really wanted to like this but I never could get into it. The fighting was alright but got repetitive. I didn't like the story, and some of the quests they have you do are pretty dumb. Go get dog food? Ugh. Too much loading!

It took me forever to find out where to buy the damn dog food, I tried to feed it cat food at one point

And yeah, the loading times are pretty annoying. Hopefully will be fixed in Yakuza 2.

Speaking of Yakuza 2, that got an excellent review in Famitsu... 37 or 38/40. As for Yakuza 1, I loved it... it's nothing like Shenmue even though it might seem that way (for the record, I loved Shenmue as well.)

Has it been confirmed for a US release yet? It's one of the games I want to play most, but I wonder when/if it'll come out in the US.

That pretty much sums up the way I felt about the game.

I'd imagine that it would. Sega seemed like they really wanted to push the franchise over here (hence why they paid a lot for big name voice actors) so assuming the first game didn't completely tank, we'll probably see it. From what I've seen, the game represents a huge improvement over the first game. And, IIRC, you can beat up a fucking tiger. That alone should afford it a US release.

This was the next to last PS2 game i bought, before retiring the system. I enjoyed it for a while, but got a little repetitive. Probably would've liked it more, if I didn't have a 360.

I'm a pretty big Shenmue fan myself and I absolutely loved it.

You can probably beat the game in a rental, especially with blockbusters no late fees. I would suggest that because it seems to be either hit or miss with people.

I read the US September sales chart a while back. IIRC, Yakuza was ranked at 20, it sold around 20,000 copies, and made around $1 million in sales. Not bad, but not excellent at the same time. It's possible that the sequel will be released.

If we're lucky: It will be subtitled and keep the original Japanese voices.
If we're unlucky: Sega will dub the game, but they decide to go a cheaper route and use Shenmue-quality VAs.

Actually, I'd say if we're lucky they'd give us the option of english or japanese voices. Besides Eliza Dushku the English voices weren't that bad and luckily her character gets killed off so we won't have to worry about her being in the sequel :D

And you never know with Sega about cheapening out and giving Shenmue quality VA's, but I can honestly say I wouldnt pay full price for the game if they cheaped out

Just when Shenmue begins to relegate itself to the back of my mind, I am once again reminded of the franchise which will probably never receive a proper completion (if it gets one at all)

God I miss the DC days... RIP Shenmue and Chu Chu Rocket.

I'm a pretty big Shenmue fan but I must admit that I didn't like this game one bit.

I wanted to like it. For $20, it would hit the spot. For $50, I expect more variety than it offers. Loading in and out of battles is very annoying, and resembles a PS RPG more than an action title (walk three steps, loading, battle, end battle sequence, loading, walk three steps, wash, rinse, repeat).

The story was more engrossing than your average action game (it's more in depth than "are you a bad enough dude to save the president's daughter?"), but the repetitive nature of the game was a bit too much. The did their best to make the actual fighting engine complex and varied, but the biggest problem with it is that it is very very forgiving to button-mashers. There's no incentive to learn the fighting system, since plowing on the "x" button works just as well.

I played the demo. Seemed intruging enough, but the battle system sucked complete ass.

Played about 2 hours and I love the story. Probably one of the best I seen in a long time. The loading time is often but not too long, so it is not too bad. The battle system really could use a lock on button.
