it's not working for me. I'm just curious to see if there are any in my area. Demand doesn't seem to be too high here. I just want a Wii and everywhere I go they're sold out. GC fucked up my pre-order not once but twice.

Holy crap that's awesome. Now if i can convince the stores to let me buy the one they supposedly have it'll be even better. This is the best non-deal deal in a long time.
EDIT - Realized that I may have sounded a bit sarcastic here but I wasn't meaning to be. This is seriously a valuable tool... someone chase down one for the Wii.

BTW, when you go to the store if you don't see them out on the floor, ask the manager. Most employee's will give you the run around.

while one person already confirmed it worked, anyone try it and it not work?
i mean to say, they say it's in stock at several stores but in reality it isnt in stock?
just not sure how realiable, accurate, and dynamic this stock system is (as i found a suprising amount of stores claiming to have it in stock in there).

No PS3s in any of the 6 stores listed for here.

Honestly with Best Buy's store inventory locator, from experience it depends on the Best Buy store. I've noted that 3 of the 5 stores Best Buy shows me with the zip code search usually have their Inventory up to date, the other 2 are a complete mess and can never find anything in their own store. I Use Best Buy's store inventory locator for a lot of items, saves me the trip for nothing and/or dealing with ignorant employees who couldn't find anything in the store.
I'll see if I can find a Wii version of the tracker, for everyone else.

This is definitely NOT a good indicator of which stores actually have stock. It might show that they had stock in the few days or something (I haven't been able to pin down exactly what the relationship is between the online display and actual stock). But I do know that my local store got some in and sold out of them and yet the online checker still listed them as having stock. So I don't think it's terribly useful in figuring out where to go.

Yeah, I saw the West LA store on Pico showed it in stock and that was quite the shock. IF they have some they're probably holding them for a certain day.
The most likely reason for so many stores showing them would be from returns. If they take back a defective system it would show in their inventory until they shipped it back.

Hmm, for the past couple of days that link has shown 5 out of 6 stores having them in stock. However, I just checked right now and only 1 has a 60GB in stock.
Option A: This tracker is working.
Option B: This tracker is not working.
Option C: I missed out on a PS3 because I didn't physically go to the stores.

Keep in mind that these systems sell out within minutes of being put out on the sale floor and that Best Buy gets their last UPS shipment in the afternoon. The only way these stores could have stock now (in the very early morning on a Monday) is if they had all have gotten shipments of PS3s on Friday (UPS doesn't deliver on the weekends) and saved them to put out on Monday. But why would they do this? It doesn't make sense. So there are two explanations. Either the tracker doesn't work (or is very delayed) or the tracker shows things like returns or systems that are being saved for other reasons.
I want to find a PS3 as much as the next guy, but I have a feeling that if you guys show up at BB bright and early tomorrow, you're going to be disappointed. The time to go is just after their daily UPS shipment is due to arrive. Of course, it's pretty much up to chance whether you happen to be there on the day they get a PS3 shipment.
Dammenion
11-27-2006, 03:44 AM
Yea I dont have much faith in them either but checking doesn't hurt. Like I said It either has to be wrong or BB was hording them over the weekend. Might have gotten a saturday shipment since ups does Saturday services after thanksgiving. I know it's not a delay since my BB hasn't gotten a shipment since Wednesday and I've been checking that link since Thursday night and it's always been OOS till tonight.
I'm fully expecting to get let down in the morning but what the hell. I'll try

If you do go and happen to find that your store has stock be sure and post quickly so that other CAGs can run out and check as well (this is especially true for people living in eastern time zones, since their stores will be open earlier).

I plan on being there before they open. However I'm West coast so other board users should know before I get back home and my report will only verify if the checker was smoking crack when it said my BB was in stock ;) However if they Hoarded them since saturday (can see not selling sunday morning since the Wii lines and alll) then they might be stocking up for a certain day or ad.

One in Aurora, CO. Or so it says. Having worked at Best Buy for two years, I'm with icruise on this; the stock listed is unreliable. Constantly I found while working there that if our system said we had only one of something brand new in the box, we probably didn't.

There are 4 out of 6 showing inventory in my area...when I used the inventory checker in the previous thread for the 60gb ps3 on friday all 6 showed stock.
I visited one of those stores that are still showing stock as of right now on friday...they said they had no units.
I can get to the same store at about 11am tomorrow, west coast which is an hour after they open and ask to speak with a manager if no one else on the east coast can confirm/deny the validity of the inventory locater before I leave.
I'll check this thread from work in the morning to see if I should bother checking the BB.

I just love how quickly the PS3 eBay auctions are basically dying on the vine, at least relative to the endless riches that danced through people's sleep-deprived heads while camping out for days on end!* This can only be good news for those of you wanting one for personal usage or as a gift.
If the eBay prices keep dropping, that can only be a sign that this sort of pursuit may pay off sooner than most would think. How's that $300-$400 profit margin taste after camping for the better part of a week, you hoarding fucks? Nelson Muntz sends a big "HA-HAA!!" to all of you.

theory, each link could just be a time relevant stock indicator, and only give you the stock indicators for the best system from a certain period of time.

I hate to say it but this is fake..the way best buy's inventory is set up , you can easily make the inventory page say one thing and be pointing to another. After you do this and get your inventory up, hit cancel,a nd the site will take you back to what this is really checking for, which is the 1080p tv.

Considering that I work down the street from the Orange Bestbuy, I'm tempted to pop by when the store opens (shift begins at 10, store opens at...err..10).
My concern is that this tracker might be including returns/ defective units amongst the totals. Still, it'd be worth it. Anyone have a good excuse for showing up 15 minutes late for work?

No dice at the Orange, CT Bestbuy. I had the associate look up both PS3 SKU's in the system, and neither showed anything in stock. I asked if there were any defective PS3's which might be showing up as inventoried items, and he indicated that they haven't had a single return (probably because nobody has actually opened their systems yet). Sucks.
However, I was able to score a memory card adaptor at the local Target. I'm envisioning that these things are going to be in pretty short supply, so you guys might want to check 'em out.

Yea I remember the Circuit City checker last year. However I think the main difference here is last year CC let you search for the product and use the link on the product page. The BB this year doesn't have a real PS3 product page since the whole pre-order mess. So these links are all from people just posting them.
Also I've yet to see anyone say they found one in stock other then the OP

This "tracker" doesn't appear to be all that accurate. I can't imagine that it would be...considering that the shipments are coming in by air, and selling out almost immediately. Unfortunately, it looks like there's simply no substitution for retail stalking.
I'm just hoping that the ebay scalpers aren't going to be so tenacious, now that their only making a "measly" $200-$300 profit.

Two local Best Buys showed up as having them in stock. I called the first one, they said no dice. I called the second one, and the guy seemed surprised..."You should only be able to find product information on the site"...to which I explained that I was looking at the inventory locator and it said they had some...he just kind of said "uh yeah, no we don't have any" and hung up.
So...either it's a no go or a conspiracy. I'll lean towards no go.

11-27-2006, 01:24 PM
The tracker doesn't work the way people think. It says if an item has been in stock, is in stock, or will be in stock shortly. I ordered a 4gb memory card once for my PSP and the first store said it was in stock when I searched with the store locator but when I got there was told that they would be in the store the following day. The second best buy I went to told me that they had sold out (the card was on sale pretty cheap that week). It can be used but it could be that the PS3s were in stock yesterday or they are going to be in stock tomorrow...

There have been some shipments of the ps3 today to the east coast (NY) at Target, they say you have to go to the store, they dont always tell you if they have it on the phone. This was from a Amazon forum, so take it for what it is worth
Nutts
11-27-2006, 02:15 PM
While the tracker could be inaccurate due to one or two units not being deleted from inventory correctly, I also know that they will get a couple consoles at a time and then hold them until they can do another "launch" type event. They did this with the 360, and it looks like they did it for the Wii. Once they get a good number in stock they will run an add or put up a sign in the store to say when they go on sale again. So basically wether it's inaccurate or not is virtually impossible to tell. If you use it on a game title or DVD it pribably works fine. I've used it twice today, and the first time only half of the stores in my area had one, then later they all did. So.... did the other stores just get one unit in stock? I don't know, maybe they are holding them for another line.
icruise
11-27-2006, 02:22 PM
I imagine the tracker has some relation to reality, but the point is that it's not a good indicator of when you should visit a particular store, so there's not much point in relying on it.

I used this tracker to eBay about 8 360s last Xmas, so I can only assume it's as accurate as before. However, when I went into the stores and they checked inventory it WOULD show up if they actually had any in stock, but they would have to get it from the warehouse area. Most workers didn't even know when they got them in.

I wen to Besy Buy at 9:53 not knowing about the tracker
so the store opens at 10:00
I go in witha bunch of other people
5 minutes in & someone behind me asked a managaer if there are any PS3's
I go to where the managar is checking on the computer along with another shopper who also overheard the conversation.
checked & ZERO
I come home, check this thread & the tracker & surprise it states the Best Buy I been to 10 minutes ago has them in stock.

No luck here. 3 Different stores in my area show as having stock, but when I called on the phone, explained the web site said they might have them, and waited for someone to check... none were available.
Now if I had to guess, I'd say someone with a number didn't come get their system yet and they haven't sold it... or maybe they have a return in-store that is messing up their stock. Either way, no joy for me. :(

It appears that the "tracker" is really giving the availability of that 40inch Sony TV. Click on the link, hit cancel, then go back into "check store availability". Looks the same doesn't it?
BTW: I tried this with Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York zip codes. Got the same results each time.

no luck here either. lists available at 4 out of 5 stores near me. telephone calls placed to them indicate none in stock.

This link is bunk. I checked the Liberty MO store 3 times today and NADA even thought the link said they were in stock.

while one person already confirmed it worked, anyone try it and it not work?
i mean to say, they say it's in stock at several stores but in reality it isnt in stock?
just not sure how realiable, accurate, and dynamic this stock system is (as i found a suprising amount of stores claiming to have it in stock in there).
yes, got this all week since launce at westwood BB and west LA best buy even tho the tracker says its in stock go figure. It may be in stock in reality and no one knows it? go figure.

I went on over to BB to see if I could get one for my boss after I saw it on the store locator in stock. After a long drawn out talk with one of the head honcho looking dudes over there, the online system can have a several day lag behind the store's real inventory. Thus, there is no real way to tell if your store has one or not unless you call or drop by to check it out. The store locator feature is a great idea, but the odds of it working are pretty low. Good luck to you all.

well while we have determined this locators are fake anyway, it seems you did get lucky.
but for posterities sake, what Best Buy was it, how many did they have in, and how many do you think they had sold since they got that shipment in (and when, was it their black friday shipment that they decided to hold until monday?).
Did Best Buy get new shipments of PS3s? I saw about 20 people at a local BB while driving to work. These just could be the everyday low life scalpers looking to make a quick buck.

Best Buy Roanoke VA, 4 when I got there, how many did they have I have no clue, no idea about BF... But the Target right next door got some today also I walked in when the last one was walking out... And my local TRU got some 20gb yesterday.. Sounds like a new round of shippments to me..

My BB in Atlanta said they didn't get shipments in Today. I've found that if you call when the store opens, the operator will let you know if they are expecting shipments that day. I think they will tell you this so you don't harass them every hour on the hour.

From what I understand, though, these shipments are more or less a surprise even to the people working there, so I'm not sure how well that would work.

so this is like a surprise third (partial shipment) or just leftovers from the second one that was actually reported?

I dont think so, I know someone in CA who saw about 24 people walk out of BB with PS3's at 2:30 in the afternoon, he just missed them by a few min. I think the managers or employees are calling their friends when they come in and selling them on e-bay, just my 2 cents from what I have been seeing and hearing around here at least

Well, if that is true, calling still won't do any good, since they won't tell you if they're there.

My 2 cents.
Checked this list the other day, and 3 of 6 "local stores" showed as having systems. But when I called, all indicated they were out.
Today, I checked again and a 4th store was "bold" meaning they should have systems. I called, and a very nice woman indicated they hadn't gotten any more... but they were expecting more, and they would be selling them as soon as they arrive. This was more info that other employees had provided, and I really appreciated her understanding. Obviously some employees are getting tired of the questions, but good customer service is ALWAYS appreciated on this end. :)

link seems to be busted now
Yeah they must've taken it down since it wasn't updated or something...anyway, not sure if this is nationwide or not but my BB got in ~40 PS3s around 1:00 today...as for me...I was doing my daily routine of checking local stores (BB, Target, CC, EB, GS, TRU) at 2:00 and just missed them...This is starting to reaaaally piss me off..but at least they're trickling in.

I was headed into my local Best Buy yesterday around 1pm or so, and saw a guy walking out with one. Went in and asked if they had any left, and the guy in the video game dept said to go to register 3 and ask for a PS3. I ended up picking one up even though that wasn't why I was there in the first place. I got home and called my brother to let him know that I had gotten one and he asked me to go back and try to get him one. I went back around 6 and they were sold out. So, maybe 1pm is the best time to go.

It varies by the store. Some stores get shipments at two different times. One in the afternoon or one in the evening. If they get the PS3's in the evening shipment they hold them until the next morning for sale. If they get them in the afternoon shipment, they go on the floor immediately.
The supervisors I've talked to say they don't disclose any of the details to the employees so the employees usually only know if they have them on order.
Crapshoot on whether they get them in the shipment at all and then if the shipment is in the afternoon or evening.
