View Full Version : Favorite game console of all time?

Well, I've always thought of starting a thread about this, asking what everyones favorite game console of all time is (Because of the games it has). I'll lay out a few rules:

-In this argument, we'll leave handhelds out (only game consoles).

-Only consider a console great because of its own games (BC, Virtual Console, etc. doesn't count, since those games were made for another platform. If PS2 may be your favorite, only say it's your favorite because of PS2 games being your favorite, as an example).

For me, my favorite console of all time is PlayStation. It has many of the best RPGs I ever played (FFVII, Xenogears, FFIX, Chrono Cross, etc.), and has many of my favorite games in series (like my favorite Mega Man X game, favorite Castlevania, etc.). The amount of game genres I liked really expanded with the PS1.

My second favorite would be PS2. PS2 probably has the most games I like, but it just lacks some of my very favorite games of all time.

My third favorite would be the SNES. The SNES has a bunch of RPGs I really loved, and many of my favorite Nintendo first party games were on SNES.

My fourth favorite would be the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was one of the biggest surprises I bought, since I wasn't really a Sega fan all my life, but it definitely increased my respect for Sega. It had many unique games I still play today (like Jet Grind Radio, Samba DeAmigo, etc.). IMO, still holds the best launch ever.

My fifth favorite would be the Genesis. I thought really hard about it, since the Saturn, Xbox, and GC come close, but the Genesis does several memorable games, like arcade type games, Sonic, Shining Force series, and Phantasy Star IV.

What's all your favorites (like top 5)?

NES has the title for me, and that will never change. Mario, Duck Hunt, Milons Secret Castle, Bubble Bobble, Bionic Comando and many many more.

Dreamcast is close though. The amount of FUN I had with this little system was amazing. From Samba to JSR to Shenmue to PSO to Typing of the dead... everytime I think of the Dreamcast I want to go home and play it.

Super NES for me. Man, that system just had some great games. Final Fantasy IV and VI, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Actraiser... The PS1 would probably be second and Dreamcast third on my list.

Nintendo DS > PS2 > PS1 > Super NES

SNES by far. The only thing that has yet come close since is the DS, which is excluded from this thread.

Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, F-Zero, Final Fantasy II/IV, III/VI, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Mario Kart, Mario RPG, Link to the Past, NBA Jam, Mario World... and that's just the AAA stuff that I own. Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Earthbound, the list can go on forever.

Nintendo DS > PS2 > PS1 > Super NESI said handhelds are excluded from this argument. :P I rather have a different thread about handhelds.

SNES > Genesis > I don't Know.

All I know is, the 16-bit generation is the one I have the fondest memories of.

With nostalgia factored in, the NES, followed very closely by the Genesis, followed by the Atari 5200.

Realistically, the Dreamcast, followed by the NES, followed by the XBox. The 360 will probably replace the XBox by this time next year.

In the sense of nostalgia the Genesis, otherwise, PS2 is my all time favorite. I never played games as much as I did once I got my PS2. The game library is just enormous.

The NES, since it was the console that started it all. (For me, anyway.) SNES and Sega Genesis run a close second and third.

I did own the 8 and 16 bit consoles, but I've always liked the newer generation games better . Been having a blast so far with Gears And R6:Vegas, so the 360 has just recently creeped its way into the charts.

4. Forth would be a toss up between the GC and N64
5. PS2 (I just bought one for $20 so it has potential to move on up)
Honorable Mention Goes to the 2600

These systems will always have a special spot in my heart, especially the first three since I spent probably half my child hood playing them.....

#1 is the SNES for me.. followed by PS2 and PS1. I mostly play RPGs.

Square still hasn't made a game I like better than their SNES games.

While I don't believe in favorites, I do favor handhelds over consoles for unknown reasons. Pretty much a large chunk of the games I could play indefinitely are on portables (past and present).

PS2, but I play my Xbox more. PS2 has the best exclusives and lots of multiplatform games, but Xbox has slightly better versions of most of the multiplatform games. But I expect the 360 or PS3 to become the best eventually.

1. PS2
2. Xbox
3. SNES
4. Xbox 360

Past that it's hard to say between Nintendo 64, Gamecube, and Sega Genesis.

My gut told me PSone, but this question inspired me to work on a personal top 100 list, and the system with the most entries so far is PS2. I got love for SNES, as well.

I don't think we'll ever see a library as prolific or diverse as the PS2's ever again (because of ever-increasing budgets, potential microtransaction abuse, and too much 'focus group' influence now), so for that alone, that's my answer.

Final answer, Regis.

SNES was my a big part of my childhood, then PSX, PS2, NES and I can't really pick from the other ones, they do not stand out as much. But SNES will definitely bring back the most nostalgia and I will always remember those games being the most fun.

When I look back at my favorite entries in the biggest franchises, they're usually on SNES: Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Final Fantasy, Mortal Kombat.

On the flip side, PS2 has a lot of exclusives that I love: Guitar Hero, God of War, Katamari, Devil May Cry. I also tended to pick it for a lot of multi-platform ports because of the controller: Tony Hawk, Tiger Woods, NBA Street.

Sega Saturn

Shining Force 3
Dragon Force
Panzer Dragoon Saga

The three greatest games of all time! No RPGs to this day have matched their greatness.

Guardian heroes and Dungeons and Dragons collections have to be mentioned.

Final answer, Regis.I agree. That's why I'm trying to make the best out of my PS2.
I also tended to pick it for a lot of multi-platform ports because of the controller: Tony Hawk, Tiger Woods, NBA Street.Same. Although, I do it for a few reasons. One has to do with liking the dual shock 2 controller the most. A second reason has to do with my PS2 giving me zero problems, and whenever I pop a game into my PS2, it works (unlike my Xbox and Xbox 360). Lastly, I plan to always own a PS2 (I plan to pick up a few slim PS2 consoles in the future, for I can play 199+ games for years).

The Nintendo 64.
3D versions of Mario, Zelda
Super Smash Brothers (infinitely better than the Gamecube version)
and of course the best game of all time
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon.

Top all that off with the most comfortable controller ever designed, solid accessories like the rumble-pak which is standard in today's controllers, and tons of great multiplayer games like Mario Party and GoldenEye... you have the best console ever.
