Gran Turismo HD on the PlayStation 3 is no more. The game, which was due for release in Japan this month, has officially been cancelled, leaving developer Polyphony Digital to focus its energy on the completion of Gran Turismo 5. All is not lost, however, as what was Gran Turismo HD will now be offered through the PlayStation Store as Gran Turismo HD Concept -- essentially a playable preview of Gran Turismo 5.

GTHD Concept will be free to download and becomes available in Japan on December 24. There is currently no confirmation of a worldwide release date (what a nice holiday treat though!). This free business has us wondering what happened to that dubious rumor about Gran Turismo's excessive microtransactioning?

It appears that there will be no online elements in GTHD Concept (apart from the very act of downloading it), with SCEI's new Mr. Big, Kaz Hirai, explaining in an open letter released this morning: "For the genuine implementation of 'Online Car Life Simulation', please wait for Gran Turismo 5."

Interesting. Perhaps they realized that 0 copies would be sold thanks to the microtransaction bullshit.

Hahahahahaha, jesus christ. It's the exact same thing that they did with Gran Turismo 2000. The EXACT SAME.

They did this with GT4 also. With the long delays and the eventual release of GT4 Prius and then GT4 Prologue. Lame.

Oh wow , another SONY broken promise .

Come on, it's not a big deal. Who didn't realize this was going to happen? It's just a GT thing.

I think this is awesome. Anything to avoid the microtransaction version.

I saw this coming a Nurburgring away. I love how 1up (I believe) just posted screenshots yesterday.

OH MY GOD! THE PLAYSTATION IS DEAD!

I never liked the game anyway, and it isn't as if they're cancelling the series.

Not surprising with their past. I'd rather that they work on the next game than work on an improved GT4/GT5 hybrid game. I would've liked to have seen how it would've turned out though because of the intriguing concept. Everyone just went overboard with the assumptions about the game.

Wait, people are MAD at this news? I think this is great news. It probably means they got the message that the microtransactions suck and won't sell.

For those of you who were mad, were you actually planning on buying this game, and paying extra for cars/tracks?

Why are there so many MS/Nintendo fanboys on the PS3 board? Seriously. I for one am happy about this because GT5 is the real deal. And now that GT HD will be a free download, count me in.

Is that game ever coming out? It was promised back in 2004 (2005?) when the PSP came out!!!

Additional download to enhance the game (or in the case of GTHD, to really be able to enjoy the game). They had wanted to charge for the barebones game, and force you to buy individual cars and tracks through the Sony Store on the PS3.

For the online mode. You forgot that part.

I'm glad they put a bullet in this one's head, they need to concentrate on true full games rather than these insignifigant digital masturbations. It shows they realize they have a problem with actually showing they have games.

As for the PSP game I can only imagine it never came t be because they couldnt do the franchaise justice. I mean if Sony really wanted it they'd only have had to put out the money to have it finished.

It's not a case of broken promises it's a realization that they had expectations that were too high and that they couldn't produce to meet that standard.
