I want to see a fully realized pokemon world where pokemon run around wild and free and you can capture and train them just like they do in the cartoon. ive been waiting for that for years now and eh if the wii price was like 150 and they had a realistic pokemon game where the pokemon also did more than just turn based rpg fighting itd be worth owning. and i still want to know why those kids in the cartoon are allowed to walk around alone and not go to school.

i agree 100% i've been waiting for years to have a propper pokemon game. but the only realistic ones are all pokemon stadium style which is terrible. they need a propper 3D running around one when u can catch train and do what ever ash does in the show. and actually see pokemon.. not just run into them in grass! come on nintendo

I agree too, but what if they made it into an MMO?

All I want is a 3-d RPG, is that to much to ask?

I'm surprised they haven't made one yet, it would sell really well and get a lot of Pokemon fans to buy a Wii.
Who knows, maybe a true Pokemon RPG for the Wii is one of the big games for this fall that Reggie was talking about.

"Hey guys you know what would be cool? If they made a Pokemon game that wasn't like all the Pokemon games. And they called it something else. Oh and it had guns, and if it was on the Wii, the Wii only cost 43 dollars and came with free cotton candy."

They won't make it because it makes too much sense and being off beat printed too much money for them. An MMO Pokemon would be fantastic, but the rapists to kids to friend code ratio would be off the charts.

Nintendo makes a lot of questionable decisions unfortunately. I've been waiting, what, more than ten years for a true Pokemon game on a home console.

Pokemon Ruby got pretty close, but I think Diamond and Pearl was like...let's say a step back, shall we?

What makes it funnier is the topic is still valid almost a year and a half later

Well, I think this topic will probably always be valid because I don't see a game like this ever being made.

Here's the thing about Pokemon:
Pokemon Red/Blue came out 12 years ago. It is a game that is aimed at young kids (middle school or younger). That means that the majority of Pokemon's target audience wasn't even born yet when the original Pokemon came out. It would be disadvantageous for Nintendo to really evolve the series, as the franchise is set up to gain more new users rather than retain loyal fans. Think back to being 10 and playing Pokemon blue. Now imagine being ten and playing Final Fantasy 8. It's a very different experience, but that is what making a "real Pokemon RPG" would do. It would alienate its target audience (sorry guys, I know it hurts, but we AREN'T the target this time)
The nice thing about Pokemon is that it introduces kids to RPGs, as sort of a springboard to other games. If they were to evolve the series, it would quickly become cumbersome for new gamers.
I'm not saying that you should outgrow Pokemon. If you still enjoy it, more power to you. But don't hold your breath for something more mature; that's not what the series is all about.

I think I was... 12? when I played FF7. I was around 7 or 8 when I was playing Shining Force and Phantasy Star. It's only a "very difficult experience" if you're a little fucking bitch.

Then imagine 20 years from now you go on ebay and find a "Brand New Never Opened Wii!!"
So you buy it and when you open the box you find out...THE COTTON CANDY HAS MERGED WITH THE WII TO BECOME ONE BEING!!

Actually all Pokemon games have been proper.
Of course a console version would be amazing. An MMO would be even better. But the thing is, THAT'S not a proper version of Pokemon.
Pokemon is meant to be a portable game. One of the big things in Pokemon is the ability to trade with friends. Ya know, face to face. The Wifi connection made trading Pokemon pretty awesome in Diamond/Pearl, but the face to face trading should never be lost. When Pokemon comes to be an online trading/battle exclusive, then the series will be dead.
A Pokemon RPG game for the Wii would be great with the exception of, of course, being able to trade face to face with your friends. To me, that's a feature that should never leave Pokemon. Even if I didn't use that feature, it still would turn me off. Of course, if they give the ability to copy & trade your Pokemon on a Wii system using an SD card... or even the Wii remote.. :-k

I would play a Pokemon MMORPG.
How epic would that be. Group battle against a Giant Jigglypuff or Red Gyarados. 2-3 person raiding dungeon of Team Rocket places. Until then, I'll stick with my proper pokemon games like Pokemon Snap.

I have been hearing a lot of people asking for a Pokemon MMO lately (they even mentioned it on Retronauts) so here is the question:
if someone made an MMORPG in which you ran around collecting a variety of creatures, and trained them and leveled them up and, if you ran into another player, you could battle them, BUT it wasn't Pokemon, would you still enjoy it? Or is it simply just seeing the Pokemon license "realized" in a different way?

I think you just described the thought process behind the game Shadow the Hedgehog.

I think you're wrong in saying that Pokémon has a target audience, just like you would be if you said Mario or Zelda's got a target audience. Nintendo's franchises are designed so that anyone can play them, and that's not going to change.
And as far as being cumbersome goes, if you start to get into all of the hidden stats and breeding and all of that crap than the game gets ridiculously convoluted. It's entirely possible to play without thinking about that stuff once (and it's a lot more fun that way), but it's there if you want it.

That would depend on a lot of things. There have been similar games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robopon_Sun_and_Star_Versions) that have been less than stellar, so the fact that it's like Pokémon isn't enough in and of itself.

Haha, it's funny that you mention robopon, because when I posted that, I was thinking "wouldn't it be cool if, rather than tiny animals, there were tiny robots" but you are absolutely right: robopon was bad.

What they should do is have the fighting in Pokemon games like Smash Bros Brawl, but have a life meter instead of throwing people off the stage. Have the 4 moves mapped to the B button and basic attacks (like they show in the TV show) mapped to the A button. Triggers are to dodge and maybe the X and Y button are to call back the Pokemon. It would be hard to animate all 300 or whatever Pokemon they have now, so maybe they can just do the 150 or so original Pokemon or just put in the favorites.

It is possible to do the genre right and not be Pokémon. Most of the Dragon Warrior/Quest Monsters games, for instance, have been good. The old Monster Rancher series wasn't bad either, although having your monsters die of old age was a pain in the ass.
The problem is that they're the only ones that come to mind outside of Pokémon. Other attempts have been bad, a la Robopon, or faded away quickly, like Magi Nation.
I still need to get the Dragon Quest Monsters Joker for my DS, come to think of it. Either that or Pokémon Diamond or Pearl - it's time for some next-gen monster battling. :-k

Ignoring the fact that that changes everything about the franchise to date and would be a HUGE undertaking in terms of time and resources...
If Brawl needed a dual-layer disc, then there's no possible way that a game like that would fit on any of the storage media Nintendo uses. I kind of doubt the Wii could play an eight-layer disc anyway.

Brawl needed a dual layer disc for all the music.
It changes everything about the franchise, but it could be for the better. I think it would be fun and make it more like the TV show.

Nintendo must realize that everyone who grew up playing pokemon from the original red/blue to most likely even the new ones diamond/pearl would love to play this series in full 3-d. Hell I would be all over a redux of red/blue with 3-d graphics and orchestrated music. I guess their saving this for when people finally tire of there products, they'll pull out their trump card and the money will flow in like water again. (I was one of those suckers who bought pokemon snap and the original pokemon stadium). Is there a petition out there yet for this topic to send to Nintendo?
