View Full Version : Something big heading to the VC?

“Something big is coming to the Virtual Console, something that, for the past decade, certain corners of the retro community have been crying out for. I wish I could say more, but the uncertainties of publishing schedules prevents me from spilling the beans too early. Nevertheless, if what we’ve heard turns out to be true, the virtual console is about to become a lot more interesting and looks like it might turn out to be much more valuable to dedicated retro gamers than we first thought.”

It says that theyve been wanting them "for almost a decade". That would seemingly eliminate anything on the N64. Also it wouldn't be referring to anything online.
Earthbound would be a good guess if this is really true. It's probably as likely as anything else.

It's not going to be one or two games, guys... it's going to be all games from a well-known publisher with a huge back catalogue, or it's going to be another console.

EarthBound would be cool to have on VC, seeing as it's my favorite game ever made, but I wouldn't say I've been "waiting" for it. I've had it, and when I want to play it I just fire up my SNES and play it. And I wouldn't say that "dedicated retro gamers" have been waiting for it either, because SNES systems are fairly easy to come by and EarthBound can be had for about $40.
What I have been waiting 10 years for is Mother 3.
It actually does in some way make sense for them to release it this way in America, since the money of the several thousand people who'd buy it (at perhaps more than $8, since it's technically a GBA game and not an SNES game) would definitely cover what it would cost to localize it, and all the other costs -- packaging, manufacturing, advertising, etc. -- would be dodged by it being download only. They might even sell a few Wiis with it, if there are any EB buffs who haven't yet found a reason to buy one.
Anyway, I'd pay like 50,000 Wii points for that shit. Hell, they're just Wii points. It's not real money. Right?
...
Right?

No way. Way too much money involved in making a whole new game from scratch. They'd never even come close to breaking even, considering they'd only be selling to people who own a Wii AND were fans of Chrono Trigger AND still have a desire to play a new 2D RPG AND have wireless internet.

Obviously it was nothing but wishful thinking on my part. But hypothetically, who said it would need to be "from scratch"? Developing new areas and a couple new characters using the same engine (were they even called "engines" back then?) couldn't be that expensive.... I would love to see some type of add-ons for old titles, despite what Nintendo has said about porting to the VC.

I don't know about Saturn emulation.. I think the data size would be way too big for that. I WISH it were true, but c'mon.. to this day, Saturn emulation isn't 100% operational.
I'm thinking it may be Square backlog.. who knows, maybe a translated Seiken Densetsu III will show up (there's plenty of fan translated ROM's floating around).
However, the strongest possibility has to be the Mother series.

Seiken Densetsu 3 would rock, since I've never got to play with traditional controls or truly translated version.
But yeah, the announcement sounds a lot bigger than just one game like Earthbound, the only things I can think it would be would be the unreleased Fire Emblems, Enix's Dragon Quest games, or maybe even retro classics with online support like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. Or Rare games - that would be huge, as well.

I disagree. I'm the first to complain about how weak the Wii is, but I'm sure it can emulate the Saturn. The Saturn has a lot of processors but they're all slow by today's standards.
However, I also think this isn't going to happen, because it would take too much effort to do this. It's not worth it to Nintendo to work on emulating all of the Saturn's processors.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood was mentioned on another forum. The guys on my QA team agree with that post, or Mother. One of those two. Something the retro community has clamored for for over a decade. Both would make sense.

Somehow this started logically and sanely with everyone agreeing that this would be Earthbound.
Then, as usual, things got out of hand.
I really don't understand WHY this would be referring to Earthbound. It came out here, it's Nintendo-owned, and has a cult following...I've pretty much assumed from the start that we'd be getting this.
The source according to the link is GamesTM (http://www.gamestm.co.uk). Which appears to be a UK magazine. Not sure I would get too excited about anything yet, at least for North America.
I'm with you, I think it might be something that europe did not get. Why would a magazine in the UK post something like that for the gamers in north America?

(somewhat) likely candidates (mostly SNES-era RPGs that never made it here):
Bahamut Lagoon
Terranigma (sequel to Illusions of Gaia, which was the sequel to Soul Blazer)
Mother 1 and/or 3
Front Mission
Dragon Quest V or VI
Seiken Densetsu 3
Star Ocean
Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo
Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu
Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

If it is Rondo of Blood, then we'll surely find out, sooner than later, what the upper end of what Nintendo (or, rather, Hudson) thinks we're willing to shell out for VC titles. If it ever makes it to VC, it certainly won't be $6.

Update to the madness by the guy who wrote the blurb in the UK magazine originally:
December 6th, 2006
A couple days back we discussed a recent article in GamesTM that said a mystery VC title was coming out. (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9790) Reader Mr.Hendo got in touch with me to give us some more info. He is a member of the GamesTM forum, and has a bit of info posted by GamesTM staff writer Ash.
Everybody seems to be grasping the wrong end of the stick, where that comment’s concerned. The mystery game in question isn’t actually a console game and wasn’t made in Japan. So everyone who’s guessing at Mario RPG or NiGHTS 2 is going to be disappointed.
You guys went nuts commenting on this story the other day, now with this bit of info, what are you changing your answers to?!
Source: GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9973)
So, it is concluded that it is a single game, which wasn't the impression I got initially. Also, it is a game that is not from Japan, and is not for a console. That leaves the PC and the arcade, if it is a port of another game.
My personal guess is still that it is a PC point-and-click adventure game, which were usually developed by American/European companies as far as I know.
Tybee
12-06-2006, 06:04 PM
Yeah, I'm changing my answer to a LucasArts adventure game, most likely Sam & Max. The evidence:
- The obvious: Sam & Max were never on a console (this would rule out the Monkey Island series) and were, of course, developed in the U.S., not Japan.
- Telltale Games, the makers of the latest Sam & Max games, have been in contact with Nintendo about bringing those games (or something else) to the Wii.
Source: http://www.mixnmojo.com/php/news/showfile.php?id=2132&category=telltale
- Sam & Max and other LucasArts adventure titles were/are huge in the U.K. (arguably more popular than they were in the U.S.), which is where this tip originates.
- Although the tip concerns just one game, it opens the door for a whole genre, which would explain the level of euphoria GamesTM attaches to the tip.

I'm already disappointed. One game on the VC is *not* worth massive hype. Now, if Nintendo sealed a deal with a company like Sierra to get all of their old point-n-click games updated and put on the VC with Wii-mote controls, that'd be worth hooting about.

The first hint towards something exciting coming on the VC was written in a UK gaming magazine, which is pretty damn legit. Although everyone is giving credit to GoNintendo, they actually just posted a transcription of the original printed column from a magazine. Check the links posted earlier for a picture of the column in the magazine, and a link to the new bit of info posted by an employee on an official forum linked to the magazine.
And Mykevermin, I think you're right about the announcement schedule. I can't wait for this Friday!

I really, really don't think you're going to see GB, GBC, or GBA titles on the VC, at least not at this early juncture. The GBA itself is still alive and kicking. The DS plays GBA games. We had the Game Boy Player for the GameCube. So I don't see Nintendo bending over backward to emulate its portables on the Wii. Maybe down the road. But not now.
GameGear is a little more likely, but I don't think retro gamers have exactly been clamoring for GG titles, most of which were scaled down Genesis games. Still, this is something I would like to see someday.
I think it has to be something PC-based. And point-and-click adventures are a no-brainer on the Wii. It's really the most logical conclusion.

What if its a series of remastered classics? That would be nice. Link to the Past with the Four Swords engine...they really should have two series' of VC games...one with just untouched classics, the other using more recent engines for classics.
I know this has already been ruled out, but I would kill for Lunar 1 and 2 on Sega CD.

Well whoever remade KQ1/2 just gave them icon parsers, much like the last few generations of point-and-click games. (I always got a kick out of asking Roger Wilco to lick random things. Buildings apparently tasted like wildberry!)
I'm not down for the speculation of this sort of thing, though. 'Cuz inevitably I'll lie in bed, my eyes wide and hopeful, thinking about playing Day of the Tentacle on the Wii and reliving the madness of Dr. Fred.
And then it won't happen. I'm going to get some shit like Kirby, but you can change his color.
