UPDATE!
I got around to implementing joystick control into the game... surprisingly it controls a million times better than the keyboard. So far what I used to play the game with was a Wireless 360 controller (wireless adapter used). The video is actually me playing with a controller. I tweaked some unseen things along with:
- Implimenting Progression Structure (will help to make the game feel more like you're progressing once I add more)
- Added a new enemy, though I might change him around depending on suggestions
- Got rid of intro voice as it slowed down intro loading
- Supposedly fixed the problem Apossum keeps having... LMK if it comes up still
I want to add more progression based things next as well as power ups hopefully. Also, a new "surprise" enemy that appears from the bottom of the screen.
After a few months of being busy with school, I've off and on gotten to go back and fix this up. Post your input and play the game.... repeat PLAY THIS GAME! IT DOSNT SUCK... too much... needs fixes ;)
I need input and info if you find problems.
Yes it may load up slow depending on what computer you have, but I expect it to run decently on your machine.
Right now it's in a very basic form. Eventually things will play and feel like a real game. Level progression, bosses, and power ups are what I plan to add, while other details will be thrown in over time. Post anything you wnt to say about the game as I hope to improve it over time and whatever people have to say about it.
P.S. this finally works on Vista as well.
Original OP:
After working on this for 2 days straight, I'm finally done. Originally (actually, still) my entry for Cheapy's Flash Movie Contest (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116670) I have a full on arcade style game for you CAGs 100% made by me from scratch (other than the music... making it 95% me then).
If you like Shmups, this is what it is. Like most Shmups, the character hitbox is small... so you at least know ahead of playing.
When you run it, it may take a few minutes to load up. Be sure to read the quick readme I threw in there to clarify that you have to give the game time to load up. I hope you guys enjoy it as I had alot of headaches and good times making this in the past 48 hours. please post your impressions and let me know if its good or not good. I know there may be a few mistakes that may have slipped pass my hours testing the game, so post any bugs if you find them.
Lastly, this only plays on PCs so sorry Mac users.

my personal opinion: the game owns. the simplistic look plays into the part of me that digs scaled back presentation in games, and i enjoyed the gameplay mechanics quite a bit. once i got a better feel for when to use a shield, it got a lot more interesting. i very rarely play shmups, though, so take this all for what it's worth. regardless, i think you did a great job with the game.
only a few problems i ran into while playing a few rounds to test it out: if you move the "ship" as far down as possible in the center, it kind of locks into place and gets stuck there until you move it up slightly. it may or may not have been designed that way, but when you're having to move all over the screen to avoid getting killed, that one little "snag" zone is kind of hard to avoid. had a bit of a problem on occasion with getting diagonal movement to register as well. the score screen also cuts off the last number, at least on my screen.
little rough around the edges, but overall this came off as a pretty quality game.
edit: while shooting, i cannot move in an up-left or down-right diagonal direction, and it's the entire bottom row that's a "snag zone."

hmmm... yeah, on the next build I put together I'll see if I can find a way to fix those problems. glad to hear you like it though :)

Great Game Rolento. I really liked the graphics, and the music fit well. A very very good freshman effort man.
Because I know criticism is more useful than praise, however, here are the few gripes I have:
- To easy
- Could use a few more slogans when you kill ships
- Don't know if it involves CAG enough to win the contest
- A little slow-paced
All in all though, I really enjoyed it and it was well worth the download. Good job!

thanx for the criticism :)
most of the points you bring up are valid, and the good thing is that I can at least go back and reprogram it. I guess you could say this is a beta release if there's enough stuff to fix.
as for the contest, if it dosn't win I don't mind. This was just kind of an excuse to see how far I could go making this thing. I've made quite a few games, but only as art pieces (see signature pic for an old game I made). This time I just wanted to make a game for being a game... and a little bit of some art.
again, thanks for the input.

Cool idea I would love to see a CAG fighting game done in Flash. Or any game that has the CAG all-stars in it.

Good stuff...I kept getting distracted by the slogans and dying! I have to disagree that it was too easy, I didn't last more than a minute each time. i didn't try to learn the hitbox or anything like that though, yet.
I like the gameplay a lot...seems like it has potential to be a full blown shumup. Afaik, no one has done a game where enemy explosions eat bullets and kill other enemies.
as for criticism, i ran into some technical stuff--
--Couldn't continue after the game over screen. I had to totally restart it to play another game.
--when I'd press a button on the menu screen, I'd get an error about the button I pressed, which then asked me if I wanted to Abort or Ignore...choosing ignore worked. I can screencap it if you want to see exactly what it is.

yeah, a screencap would be great since it usually says exaxctly what is going wrong.
that's weird that it didn't let you start over... hmm odd.

it's probably just something on my pc...screencap coming up in a minute
Really nice game. Played it just for a bit, my only complaints are
Your guy can get stuck at the very bottom of the screen. Well not really stuck, but he gets blocked from moving left to right and you have to move him up a bit to then go side to side. (The 'snag zone' already mentioned.)
Doesn't run in a window. Not a big deal and probably limited by the tools you are using to create it?
Takes quite a while to load (as you noted in your readme.) Again not a big deal, but it would be nice to have the loading screen pop up faster.
What tools did you use?

ahh! yeah, I realize I didn't spend enough time testing the main menu probably... I'll see if I can fix that... probably just a mess up on some of my coding.
as for windowing, I can do it. In the next build I'll reconfigure it so windowing is enabled.
the character getting stuck on walls is going to be tricky to solve, but I think I have an idea on how to fix it.

Awesome!
I'm hoping to have updatd i the next build:
-Soundtrack chooser to decide what songs you want played
-a condensed alternate version with lower quality stuff to make the game load faster
-wall "grab" fixed
-minor visual adjustments like the game over score
-bug fixes
-more
I'm a bit tired of working on it, but hopefully I'll get back to it in the next day or two

Yes I bumped this old thing, the game has problems, the link in the OP probably dosn't work (yet), etc, but bear with me:
I originally thought my files became corrupt in the process of this game and thus couldn't work further on the game. I recently found out it was just some small file reading problems in the coding program I was using. So I am going back and fixing alot of the old problems addressed here and improving some aspects. If I can find the time, I will also possibly implement a level based system and/or new ennemies and/or bosses. So far the following have been fixed mostly or improved:
-Improved Control
-Score going off screen fixed
-Music changes
-Load times WAAY Better!
-More dynamic and fluid menus
I'm just happy to get back with this game since the file corrupt thing ruined my month I made it.
If you have any proposals, please post. I'll have a demo up soon hopefully.

Definately glad to see that you're going to continue working on the game, best of luck man. I woudln't bother with a demo and instead work on improving the main game, personally.

I get stuck on the Square Root screen. if I press anything, I get this:
http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/7205/untitledkk3.th.jpg (http://img76.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitledkk3.jpg)
on one try, I hit ignore twice, then hit the space bar and the sounds from the game started playing, but it was still stuck on the SR screen. on another try it was just frozen all together.
and make sure you tighten up the graphics on level 3.

Hmm... From the looks of it the program is doing some stuff I didn't tell it to do. I'll look it over and sorry about that.
As for level 3... so far there is no level 3 so I don't know what you mean >_<
