Ok, I should be getting a PS3 this week (connection at a store), anyways...I was curious how to hook it up.

I have a 26" LCD with Component & HDMI. HOWEVER, I have an optical out running FROM my TV TO my receiver. So, if I run HDMI, will it use my optical out for the sound? My receiver does NOT have HDMI. Just curious how this hookup works...I know there are issues with HDMI, correct?

So basically, HDMI from PS3 to TV. Optical from TV to Receiver. Does that work for Dolby DIgital?

(360 is on my BIG TV).

****UPDATE****

Ok, I got my optical switch today I realized I don't think I need it. Basically, the demos are NOT 5.1 surround, which was throwing me off. I put in my rental copy of Resistance and noticed that if I leave it as my basic setup, I would get 5.1 out.

So, HDMI from PS3 to TV
OPTICAL from TV to Receiver.

The only change is to switch Blu-Ray from PCM to Bitstream and enable the 5.1 outputs via HDMI. Everything seems to work that way. I'll leave my switch up for a while, but it seems that I can remove it for less clutter. Not a big issue, it's optical either way I look at it.

When you connect the HDMI to the PS3 it will put the sound through the HDMI by default. You can change this however. Go into the PS3 sound settings and it will give you the option to use optical output for the sound. That is how I have mine set up.
Just out of curiosity, why don't you hook the PS3 to your BIG TV too?

Basically, the PS3 is on my second TV just in case I want to play a game and the wife is watching the other TV. Also, I'm out of component inputs on my main TV. (I only can do 1080i on this TV also). i know I could get a Component video selector.

I'm still confused about the sound issue. Since the optical is ON my TV, I would NOT run an optical cable from the PS3 to my receiver....

I'm assuming if the HDMI brings the sound into the TV, the optical will carry it out.

When I first hooked my PS3 to my TV using an HDMI cable, I tried to use the optical out from the TV to my reciever. It didn't work. I am guessing it has something to do with the HDCP protocols. Or I could have done something wrong. But running the optical from the PS3 to the reciever works as long as you change it in the PS3 setup menu.

I sure hope that was just a fluke...I don't think I have any more optical inputs on my receiver. I know I can get a splitter at monoprice, but not sure how well that will work.

Get a video selector with optical in/outputs and just use the optical portion. That is what I have to do with the PS3.

Others are reporting on different boards that my way WILL work...so maybe it depends on the TV also. Who knows....

I know Monoprice has some cheap Optical Switches (one is OOS now though)

When you get yours, be sure to post here if that way works. If it does I may try again.

I'm getting it today...I may not be able to hook it up until the weekend. I have no HDMI cable yet. Others are reporting it will NOT work, some are. So, maybe it differs from TV to TV. I guess the worse thing is another OPTICAL cable and OPTICAL switch. Hopefully Monoprice gets them instock soon.

Actually almost all of it depends on the TV. The audio and video are both being transmitted to the TV via the PS3's HDMI connection. It's whether or not your TV allows audio tansmitted via HDMI to be tansmitted back out through the TV's audio outs that is the issue. I could be wrong, but the problem wouldn't have much of anyhting to do with the PS3 itself I wouldn't think.

I'll report back whenever I get my HDMI cable.

The PS3 will allow you to send the audio through a seperate optical connection.

Well, hopefully I get my HDMI cable today so I can test it out....I'm doubting it will work, so I already ordered a cheap Optical switch and will be getting another optical cable...JUST IN CASE.

Well, JUST running the HDMI cable to my TV works! No need for the optional optical cable I already purchased :( oh well, makes it easy on running my setup.

Well, I guess the sound does NOT work correctly. I played a few demos and I only got PCM sound from my receiver. Not 5.1, so I may just run an optical cable switch to take care of that anyways. Should be easy enough.

HOWEVER, I did get 5.1 from BD when I switched it to Bitstream...so, go figure????? Not sure how this whole sound setup works. Are the demos in 5.1 surround? (MotorStorm and NBA?)

When optical out is used on the TV, you lose the 5.1. This is the case with most of the TVs that have this feature. Something with converting the sound to work on the TV, and then spitting it back out.

Weird thing is, the Blu-Ray disc DID output 5.1 when I tried this...although, as I said I had to switch to Bitstream. I will just run optical directly though...as I will get an optical switch today.
