How do I convert a file from somthing other than what only shows up on the media sharing deal for the 360 to something that will play on the 360. For example something that is in an mpeg or better yet a .mov quictime file to .wmv so I can watch it on my tv through the 360?

you need a conversion program...
there are a few good ones that were discussed in another thread.
one is M2PMCEncoderZX which is free but kind of annoying since you have to set the settings each time you queue a video. Then there's Riverpast Video Cleaner which is good but you have to pay for it.
There are lots of these kinds of programs out there, so maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

thanks danked, I'll give that one a go.
GV = Golden Valley I presume? You're right up the street from me, I live in Hopkins
PS - How does the VLC software work? What checkboxes do I have to select when doing the file converter deal to get say a divx or quicktime kind of file to play on the 360? The instructions provided in the help deal don't really help me all that much.
