Hey all,

This isn't a thread to bitch and moan about a console that has died. I'm more curious to hear if anyone else had similar problems with their Xbox 360.

I got a launch console and have had no problems at all until two nights ago. I hadn't used it in about 10 days due to a Thanksgiving break to go back home, but when I started playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted (fugly greatest hits case), it started freezing constantly. It would be a series of vertical, blocky-graphic lines ontop of the game graphics with a VERY loud but thankfully brief electronic static sound that freaked the crap out of my cats. This would happen in game and during the movies. Sometimes I could play for an hour before seeing it, but most likely, it happened within 5 minutes. Thinking I had a defective game, I popped in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Same freeze within 5 minutes. Gears had the same problem.

I tested a bit, removed all accessories (including the hard drive), same freeze. I tried my work's A/V cable, same freeze. Of course, Microsoft's customer service center is "updating their software" for the past 2 days and cannot initiate a repair order, but that's what's going to happen.

Anyone else get this kind of issue? Seems like when most people's 360 dies, it's with a ring of red.

I'm pretty bummed, as it's the first console to die on me. Hell, I still have my original 2600 and C-64 working well.

thanks for reading.

This is what happened to my launch 360 (though mine died in just three weeks and was replaced way back in December 2005). I never saw any red lights and it just froze.

The only time I have ever seen the red lights is when the Nyko Intercooler isn't plugged in all the way. I just make sure things are tight and then it all works fine again.

I've had mine since April and my room mate rented GoW tonight, and it froze twice on him with 5-10 mins of starting single player. I've it happen all the time in Dead Rising so I've never even got a chance to play it

This is pretty much exactly what happened to mine. A launch system that just started freezing with a red/black checkerboard screen. This was 11/20/06 (two days left on the warranty for launch systems). Tried starting it the next morning froze twice and on the third time starting it, 3 red lights.
Needless to say my system is being shipped back from MS as we speak.

I remember hearing about this specific problem a lot back around launch time.

This is almost EXACTLY what happened to mine. Only 2 days later on 11/22. It almost seems as if these things were made to last about 1 year and then take an uber shit. I just got a different one back a few days ago. It seems to work fine, my only beef is that when the disk tray is empty the thing sticks when I try to eject it, I have to nudge it to get it out. But other than that it's ok.

Welcome to the death of your console. Pretty much every launch console is defective and this was bound to happen eventually. Same thing happened to me, your console will probably die pretty soon. the red ring follows shortly

I appreciate everyone's responses...it's interesting since I hadn't really heard about this type of death before.

Now I'm stuck in Microsoft customer service hell. I've been calling for the past 4 days, and it's been one thing or another. First their internal systems were being updated for 2 days and wouldn't allow a repair order, then last night I spent nearly 2 hours on the phone with them as I would get disconnected nearly every time I got put on hold. Then when I called back, I'd have to argue my case to get the free shipping/repair. Finally I get through again this morning and after being on hold for nearly 25 minutes, I'm told that their systems aren't allowing them to create a repair ticket and that I'd have to call back on Monday morning. Fantastic.

At least I didn't get disconnected this time.

Almost worth it to buy another Core system at this point.

So......now they tell me that I need to send in my HD with the console, even though I have proven that the HD is not the issue. My question to those who have sent in repairs, did you get your original HD back with all the info still there?
