I am hearing so many people say that keeping your 360 vertical is bad for it. But whenever somebody says that, there's always somebody else that argues that that isn't true. Then it turns into a big heated arguement. I'm really sick of reading these arguements and having no definite answer at the end of it.
I have no idea whats true and whats not, so can somebody please just tell me once and for all if keeping the 360 vertical really is bad for it?

all that it affects, is that if the 360 moves at all, even a little bit. It could scratch the hell out of the disc, making it useless. Although, if you place it in a spot, where there is virtually no way that it may get bumped, then go for it. But, i personally think consoles look better horizontally

vertically allows all the air to get out of the system easier, so in theory it sounds better for it. just make sure the thing does not move.

The only system I keep vertical is the slim PS2. But I think that's pretty safe because it has that hard spindle to keep the disc in place. With a 360 or fatty PS2, where the disc just sits in the tray, I imagine it could be more risky.

Is this true? A lot of air comes out of the vents on the bottom of the system (the right side if it's horizontal). Seems like it gets better flow horizontally.

It doesn't matter. They designed it to stand either way.

you mean in. the fans exhaust air, and all the vents allow the air in drawn thru the parts that heat up.
not that that matters too much. the convex shape allows the air to reach the vents on the bottom.
the system was designed to sit either way. i dont beleive it really matters. they wouldnt have made it that way if one orientation was grossly bad for the console.
I keep mine horizontal, but in theory it shouldn't really matter provided you don't move the system while a disc is spinning inside. That would be true whether the system is horizontal or vertical, though.
I keep my Wii vertical, but that one is slot-loading and comes with it's own stand with rubberized feet.

I don't think the Wii was designed to be horizontal.

You sir, are a genius.

It can go either way--there's little feet for both.

Here is how to answer your own question. Research DVD Rom drive technology and hard drive platter technology. Then decide which you'd rather be spinning at a high rate vertically. That's your answer. :)
And d00k, I think you need to explain your weird obsession with CG character images with malformed mouths RIGHT NOW.

Officially, they are designed for both vertical and horzontal.
However, you will never see me running it vertical. It can tip over easier. The disk is not balanced. If the console moves even a little bit bye bye disk.
This was a debate in the computer world too with CDROM drives. Many people in the industry felt it was a risk to spin a disk vertically, and I agree.
Hope that helps.
