I always had a question about this. How come it gives the free month of gold for creating more than just your account, but not others?

Then I never got it. I know that I signed up for live and had no gold card/account so I had to go out and pick up a gold card.

Yes it only works for premium owners. After you create your account in the dashboard and choose your free silver membership, it immediately tells you that you qualify for a free month of gold.
I had a friend that did it all online, creating his account etc, and it didn't let him get his free month. He called support and they told him he had to create another account all through the dashboard, then it worked.

Not 100% true. I created a silver account for my wife, in addition to my gold on my core 360 and it gave her a free month of gold.
