If the person paying used Paypal and a stolen credit card then Paypal will pull the funds back. The seller gets screwed. I have seen it many times.

i had this problem once. I traded with some kid in Canada, but he never sent me his games. So after me calling his house and bitching out his mom and threatening to call the govt for mail fraud, he said he would send me money through paypal. he sent it to me alright -- from "a friend's" account. then two days later i get an email from paypal that says "your money is being taken back because of fraudulent use of another user's account." aka this schmuck used a stolen account to send me money.

Long story short, six months later more bitching and a few borderline stalker calls to his mom, his dad, and his school principle, i got my games back (now used, instead of new) and a couple others to boot.

thatstoobad
06-29-2004, 03:33 PM
that happened to a friend, except it was a cd and $60. but yeah, if someone pays with a credit card that is not theirs (often known as "stolen"), paypal takes the money back and credits the card. the worst part is that they don't require that the item be sent back. so my friend was out the $60 plus he couldn't get the cd back.

PsyClerk
06-29-2004, 03:36 PM
the worst part is that they don't require that the item be sent back.

Uh...they don't require it because they can't require it. If someone stole my credit card and used it to send money for an item via PayPal, I sure as hell am not responsible for whatever was sent in return. It sure as hell wouldn't have been sent to me anyways.

What's funny is that he is saying its fraudulent even though it was paid by their family's paypal account, sent to their address and their name on the address, their email address..... but they never got the package even though my delivery confirmation shows it was delivered on the 15th of June? As far as Paypal only being able to take funds if you have a balance, that's not necessarily true...if you have a linked bank account they have been known to just take the money out of there.

If the sender and the shipping address from paypal were both verified then you are protected under paypal and you will be reimbursed for any losses of goods due to fraud. So when I am selling something via ebay/paypal and the other person is not verified I won't do it. If the person is verified (which means they have a linked bank account) but the address is not, I try to make contact over the phone to make an attempt to see if the person is legit. You never know, but usually a scamster won't talk to you over the phone/give you a legit number.

The problem with this is that any address that isn't where the person receives their credit card statement is not "verified". I went through this whole thing with paypal of trying to get my job and/or grandmother's addresses verified, because no one is home at my apt. to receive packages. They wouldn't do it nomatter what, this was a few months ago. They needed I think a credit card bill, possibly a utility bill in my name would have done it, can't remember. But since I didn't have those things, the other addresses remain unverified. Some merchants refuse to send anything to any address other than a verified address, so I'm forced to make arrangements to be home or left with a neighbor, etc.

Hopefully this can be helpful for the future.....always check the verification status and when possible see that you are covered under paypal's fraud prevention.

I disagree. The material used to ship the item should have had no bearing on what the buyer THOUGHT he was getting. The buyer made an assumption based on the packaging. Had the package come in a FedEx envelope, it would be reasonable, based on the thought process of this buyer that he could claim he was receiving shipping supplies from FedEx and not the game promised by Redgopher.

If anyone thinks the buyer isn't sitting there playing the game shipped by Redgopher and laughing about this most trivial of reasons to claim he was defrauded you are sadly mistaken.

Do you know Jack personally? Because I'd like to kill myself. Better yet, I'd like to kill everyone in that house. Can you have him send a gas cannister over there and kill those scamming sons of a bitches?

This is exactly what happened. I got screwed because the address was unverified. I'm pretty sure that the fucktards I was talking to on the phone were the people who scammed me, and the Paypal account wasnt even theirs. So technically, I'm screwed and all I can really do is file mail fraud charges (which I did this morning) and call the Palos Park police... I called them too, but guess what? For some reason, I can hear them but they can't hear me. Fanfuckingtastic.

I mentioned to the father, or as I like to call him, Der Fuhrer, that I had done the same thing when I was 13 or so and got caught, that it was stupid but I can understand what it's like. Basically the only reason I said it was to get him to understand that he can't always trust his kids, you know? Well as soon as I said it, he proceeded to tell me he hoped my parents beat the shit out of me as a child.

Yeah.

Really helps the cops in Palos Park can't hear me. This is so gay.

DUDE! Calm down and STOP BEING AN IDIOT. If you shipped to his confirmed paypal account and you used tracking then you can be under the seller protection policy. That's what it is for. It's paypals way of protecting sellers in odd cases like this. Just state very planly and kindly to any questions and give them a detailed email giving them all the info they requested. If you dont hear from them in about 10 days email them again. I bet if you follow my advice that in 2-4 weeks you get the money back. This has happened to me at least 5 times. Every time I get the money back. Once it was $600 even.

You are totally being a spaz and I am suprised people here arent giving you advice on how to handle this and just letting you go on and on and on.

I don't think he's covered. He already said that the address wasn't covered.

So they can take your money even if you pull it out of your account first?

Mr. Defender likes to be a late arrival, I see. If you had actually bothered to read the rest of the posts, you would have seen that one.

Well I tried to read most of the ranting on the 4 pages but I guessed I missed the part where you admitted to being the biggest noob ever and shipped to an unconfirmed address from a paypal payment. Maybe you could point out where that was?

Whats your next brilliant move? Buying a new xbox from Nigeria for $50 but you have to send cash?

Also to clarify...a confirmed address is different than a verified account. The buyer does not have to be verified at all. You just have to make sure their address is confirmed.
