I keep thinking about picking up a cheap widescreen LCD monitor...probably a 19" or 23" for when I get a 360 next year. I now started to backtrack a little and am also thinking that I could grab a 19" or bigger CRT for almost nothing. So would I lose out by not having widescreen? How would the 360 fair on a CRT? CRT's are better in some aspects right? Like black levels?

Mine is hooked up to a 17" Apple monitor [free from brother-in-law] , @ 1280 x 1024 " .
It looks damn good , and it's not in widescreen .

As long as you run it at it's native resolution , it should look great .

I run it on my 22 inch Westinghouse monitor, and it looks beautiful! Price was great ($200) and I didnt have to buy a VGA cable for the 360 (Direct composite inputs!)

CRT are better in almost all aspects. Better color, contrast, black levels but the bad is geometry, size/weight and some overscan. I wouldn't buy a CRT unless you go all out and buy a 28'-32' WS.

go with crt. I have mine hooked up to a 32" phillips crt and it looks beautiful.

It was a bitch to move into my new apartment but well worth it considering I got this amazing tv on the cheap.

Track down one of those bad boys and you're set. They're expensive on eBay, but I see them relatively frequently at auctions and occasionally on craigslist for cheap.

CRTs do not have native resolutions. I run on a 19" CRT Monitor at 1280x720 it looks fantastic, I adjusted the vertical size with the controls so it has the correct aspect ratio (letterboxed 16:9). I tried 1280x1024 and it didn't look nearly as good, I think the 360 upscales its 480p output (the 360s native 4:3 resolution) in order to make 1280x1024. If you haven't tried a widescreen resolution, Richlough, I would try one to see if it looks better.

I know , he was talking about an LCD .
My monitor is 4:3 , so no need to try widescreen [16:9] resolutions .

My monitor is 4:3 as well, but I think the 360 sends out a lower quality signal if you use a 4:3 resolution as it looked worse to me. I would try using a widescreen resolution and letterboxing it yourself with the monitor controls. See if it looks better.

A friend of mine has that very monitor and it's the best damn picture I've seen (outside of the several thousand dolar high end graphics monitors)

CRT > everything else (unless you want a big screen, CRT doesn't go much past 36")

Just keep in mind that CRT hurt your eyes after a while, and LCD's are much better. I'd rather get a LCD.

That's not necessarily true at all, and likely has more to do with the refresh rate than the type of monitor it is.

If you can afford the size and weight, a CRT will give you the best picture every time. Sadly, they only go up to about 37"...if there were a way to do it, I'd love to have a 46" CRT that I could just plunk down in my living room. It would never be stolen since it would take half a dozen people to move it.

Personally, I'd go LCD. Actually, I did go LCD. I have a 20" (visible) CRT monitor - an NEC MultiSync FE1250. It looked great with the 360. I ran the 360 in widescreen at the highest resolution, and adjusted the monitor to squeeze the image the proper resolution.

A few months ago, I switched over to the Samsung 215TW, a 21" widescreen LCD. The reason for the change was mostly screen size - I think the 360 is meant to run in widescreen and I don't want to play it any other way, and a widescreen LCD is simply going to be a lot bigger than pretty much any 4:3 CRT running letterbox. Image quality-wise, the LCD's black levels are much worse, but it makes up for it with some very nice brights. Images pop a lot more than they can on a work oriented CRT. This particular monitor seems to have very good transcoding, so running it out of its native resolutions looks fine, though it does only display in 16:10 and 4:3 (no 16:9).

LCDs – brighter, bigger. CRTs – more versatile, more accurate.

Keep in mind I'm talking about computer monitors here.

I have a Samsung 30" widescreen CRT that I got awhile ago and it looks great! As another poster said no such thing as native res on a CRT. No lag worry.

I was disappointed with the 360 on my 19" CRT. It's fully capable of 1920x1440, but the 360 only recognized it at 800x600 and it looked no better than my regular TV.

My 360 looks great on my 20" SGI CRT beast. At launch, the colors looked a bit washed out, but a patch fixed that shortly after. I was considering picking up an HDTV or larger LCD, but I'm holding off since my monitor looks great. I'd really only want an HDTV for more size.

Huge CRT monitors can be had fairly cheaply, as long as you're buying it locally. I actually had this beast shipped, I paid $60 or $70 total and $50+ of that was shipping. Be sure to get a monitor with multiple inputs, if you're going to share it with your computer.

To the previous poster, your 360 doesn't "recognize" or detect anything, other than that you're using the VGA cable. You have to specify the resolution you want to run in, yourself.

Just out of curiosity, what resolution are you running your 360 at on your monitor?

The only resolution option it gave me when setting up was 800x600.

I used this when I first got my 360...I have it hooked up to a regular lcd hdtv now, but this CRT is awesome with the 360.
