I have a few in mind but we're thinking of a 5 year old and younger here. Also I know I'm sounding picky but I'm looking for something the adults can enjoy and the kid can look back on and while it will have weathered will provide a fond sense of nostalgia. Would "Kimba: The White Lion" be good or too scary?
I already have "Land Before Time", and both "American Tail"'s as well as "The Rescuers" or something else in mind for traditional American animated fare.
Also would "Spirited Away" be good for a preteen or would it be a bit too young?
We're dealing with a set of nephews here 5 and under then a niece 12-13.

While not an anime, it is a great movie for both kids and adults...The Iron Giant.

Any Miyazaki films.
My concern about Miyazaki was the kid being able to understand it or some scenes being too frightening.

I second A Little Snow Fairy Sugar for the niece.
Also Best Buy has the Pretear box and Seasons one and two of Wedding Peach on the cheap. Another good one is Angelic Layer (ADV boxset).
The Hello Kitty Animation Theater DVDS are also excellent (retelling of fairy tales) and my daughter LOVES them.
For animated movies, go with Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and The Cat Returns. These are universally loved and appropriate for any age or gender. Castle has adventure elements, Totoro is kind of slow but moving and The Cat Returns is like a fairy tale.
Good luck. :)

Forgot Totoro. Thanks kittycatgirl2k. And Snow sounds and looks excellent for my younger niece.
Also does anyone know where I can find that bittersweet Cinderella Anime that aired on West Coast tv back in the 80's?
Oh! I just realized I may send my nephew some episodes of "Doraemon". Any good places to find them subbed or dubbed?

Spirited Away should be fine for kids. There's a little blood, but that's about it.
Dead of Knight

Kiki's Delivery Service for the younger kids.
Cardcaptor Sakura (NOT THE SHITTY CARDCAPTORS REMAKE) for the girl.

Get the Project A-Ko complete set
Those movies features artists from all the well known Anime you and your kids might be watching. Made as a group project from many people in the Anime world.
yes there might be
pantie shots. ( which this film is noted for )
Slight nudity
Screen flipping( Pokemon thing )
Then I also Suggest Nobodys Boy from the 3000 leauges in search of monther series. This boy has been raised as a orphan with surrigate parents. The boy is traded and then begins his journey in which he finds his real mother. Really touching kinda like Bambi when the mother dear was shot. My Grand Mother got me this movie also.
Windaria is also another real nice film where rival kingdoms fight until there is no more. What is really nice is the artwork kinda like Secret Of Mana meets india. I love that movie and watch ever now and then. The ending is real sad thou.
Bagi monster of Mighty Nature is also a great film for a young child. Bagi a mutant animal escapes and is raised as a childs pet. She and the child now man reunites when he is at a teenager stage. The movie is over all childish and have the blah blah kiddie bike gangs, Mad scientists, and corperate goons. THe movies is one of those animal meets man movies. The ending is sad but the overa ll is funny.
The real Rockman collection that capcom offically made is out. Five Part episode. Not Ruby spears Mega Man. This is a five part episode Rockman which is really nice in terms of kiddie ideals.
Ferngulli is a great Amerikan film with the disney dancing and stuff. It takes place in the rain forest and is a great film. Personally my middle schooled showed us this in terms of Rain forest awareness where they then gave us some rare rain forest plants. Really nice movie for a kid.
To be honest cartoons as a gift is kinda ifi. I would try and give them something to benifit there future. I watch my Anime on my computer so that is how I really feel about it. I really hate the idea of a child watching a cartoon over and over again.
Out of all of these I would suggest Project A-ko. The original movie is possible the greatest feat in Anime. The next couple of movies is really done well.

I agree with Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Iron Giant recommendations. Spirited Away is a bit too dark, IMHO.

If the niece likes romance, then I happen to think that "Whisper of the Heart" is the best anime romance movie ever created.

Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro are appropriate for all ages. Totoro has the s-word ("stupid") which kids like to repeat, but honestly, so what.
For a five year old, I would not recommend Castle in the Sky -- guns, blowing up, fighting etc -- okay for a six or seven year old, though. Depends on what they've watched before. In my case, despite loving Castle in the Sky and wanting to share it with my son, I wouldn't show it to him until he was six, and I even wrestled with that. It was okay and he loved it.
I would also not recommend Spirited Away. It's not a really scary movie, but it has some things that are intense for young children. Six or seven at least. I'd say the same for the Iron Giant, too.
For a little younger, Panda Go Panda is awesome. Perfect for kids who love trains, and I found it completely charming. Papa Panda's dub voice is hilarious. Appropriate for 3 and up.
Pokemon is a good suggestion, too, though my son liked it sort-of at 5 but now loves it at 7. Same with the next door neighbor's son.

Perhaps not anime, but my favorite cartoon/movie is Lilo and Stitch.

Appropriate for 3 and up.I actually thought of this one, too, but I wasn't sure if it would be easy to find. I saw it a long, long time ago and loved it, and I think it's good for children of all ages. The way the son panda sticks onto the dad panda's belly is awesome.

I remember watching My Neighbor Totoro as a kid, I really loved it so I would have to recommend that one.
Spirited Away would be good for the 12-13 age range, but the younger ones would probably lose interest in it.
Proco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service and The Cat Returns are both really good and should keep the kids interested.
I also really like Panda Z, its a TV parody of Mazinger Z for really young kids, each episode is less than 10 mins so its good for those with no attention spans and I found it pretty funny.
Edit - I found an episode of Panda Z on youtube, you can watch it and see if that's something you'd like to get the kids.

Um, Panda-Z has a "13 and Up" sticker on the back of the DVD. I saw it at Best Buy and was going to get it (the one with the toy is $6) but that killed it, since I was looking for something I could watch with my 7 year old.
Sometimes these age indications are dead wrong. But they usually are there for a reason.

It was originally hard to find and (relatively) expensive, but it was reissued at a sub-$15 price point not too long ago.
I think I found it both times at Fry's.
Anytime we hear the word "bamboo", someone chimes in with a Papa Panda voice "Oh, that is especially nice."

I don't really think Panda Z has anything in it to warrant a 13 and up rating. Since it's a parody of Mazinger Z it has the robot with the breast missiles in it, but that's about the worst thing it has in it. Like with anything watch it first and decide if you want the kids to see it.
