PRESS RELEASE

Dec. 19, 2006 – Nintendo’s wildly popular Wii™ home video game system not only revolutionizes how people play games, but it also entices new people into the world of gaming. On Dec. 22, Nintendo and Opera Software bring the Internet to the living room couch with a free trial version of the Opera Web browser. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can download a free trial Opera browser to activate the Internet Channel of the Wii Menu and begin surfing the Web.

Starting Dec. 22, Trial Version Lets Users Surf from the Comfort of their Couches

“In addition to providing innovative and exciting new ways to play, Wii also offers further services and entertainment for all the family. This newest Wii Menu Channel is just the latest example of how we are doing this” says Nintendo of Europe Marketing Director, Laurent Fischer. “Wii is the perfect console for everyone to enjoy and this is being reflected in the phenomenal sales across Europe. ”

“Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available,” says Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Devices at Opera Software. “Wii’s unique interface adds a new dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family will enjoy operating with ease.”

The final version of the Opera browser will be available at the end of March 2007, and will be free for all Wii owners to download through the end of June. After June 2007, the browser will be available for download in the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii Points.

The Internet Channel provides an optimal Web browsing experience on people’s home television. The Adobe Flash-enabled trial version of the Opera browser puts the Internet right onto owners’ television screens and lets them browse with ease, enabling them to check sports scores, plot maps or visit their favorite Web sites. Multiple family members can gather around the television to plan a holiday or make online purchases. The pointing abilities of the Wii Remote allow users to click on links they want to see or to zoom into any part of the screen through the motion of the controller. In addition, the Wii Remote can be used with an on-screen keyboard to make text entry as easy as point and click.

The Forecast Channel, provided by Weathernews which allows users to check out weather information for anywhere in the world using a 3-D globe, is available from 19th December.

The Internet Channel joins the four channels which have been available since launch: Disc Channel, Photo Channel, Mii™ Channel and Wii Shop Channel as well as the newly available Forecast Channel. The Internet Channel, Forecast Channel and Wii Shop Channel are available at no charge, though they require Wii owners to have a high-speed Internet connection. I take that press release to mean that the early adopters of the system will get the browser for as a free download from March until June. Are they gonna make you re-download and pay for it in June? I'm thinking we're getting it free so-long as you download before they start making you pay for it.

The final version of the Opera browser will be available at the end of March 2007, and will be free for all Wii owners to download through the end of June 2007. After June, users who haven’t already downloaded the Opera browser can go to the Wii Shop Channel to download it for 500 Wii Points.

I personally think that the browser is not completely finished but they are pushing it out early to sort of compete with the PS3 in terms of functionality. We may just be essentially beta testing.

While not Opera, I find beta versions of Firefox infintable more stable than final releases of IE, to say nothing of Firefox's final versions.

I can't forsee using the Wii browser much at all, as I have a computer hooked up to the same TV that the Wii is hooked up to, but I look forward to playing with it. And I could see it being useful, especailly for people without a computer nearby their TV.

Zooming in is also so easy, so quick, as is scrolling.

The screen looks like it has an inch or so of black space on top and bottom and a little less on the sides (instead of being pure fullscreen) but it still looks great.

This is going to change my web browsing, LOL.

Also, no need to put http:// and whatnot into the browser when entering URLs.

Agreed on the mega icons. Maybe in the main release, we can customize the size.

But really, that is such a minor complaint...and right now, that's my ONLY complaint.

I also love that it's pretty quick when entering items, even going one character at a time (because of the on screen pointing - so much easier than, say, on Dreamcast). Speaking of entering text, the list of auto-completion list of text is pretty comprehensive.

Oops! I did it again.

Had they made us pay $5 or $10 for this, it'd be worth it, I'm pretty convinced so far...

^ Agreed. Typing is PLENTY sufficient for URL entering and search terms, but for e-mailing and message board posting, a USB keyboard would be great...and I think we can count on that being supported, definitely.

Also, remember the rumor I think we all read a few weeks ago saying the browser would have trouble rewinding and forwarding in Flash files due to memory constraints? No such issue, works flawlessly.

Is it just my imagination, or does the zoom feature automatically adjust based on what you're trying to zoom in on? I'm in YouTube, and when I click to zoom a video, it zooms to a level that keeps the title and the video in view. However, when I click in the comments section or at the top navigation bar, it zooms in large enough that I can read the text (a larger zoom level than on the video).

If it adjusts like that, that's incredible...but maybe it's just a fluke on YouTube pages?

As smooth as it is, definitely a trial and we are the beta testers =p

Gamespot doesn't load for me, Kotaku zooms out everytime i try to scroll down (I neeed to zoom to be able to actually read anything), gamevideos.com videos don't play at all for me either. Haven't tried CAG yet cuz typing without a keyboard is a serious pain.

Also, the browser takes up less screen space than the actual Wii UI. Its looks really weird, and I have no idea if its the browser or just my TV being dumb.

Oh, and anyone figured out a faster way to get to the 'enter a web address' screen? I'd rather not have to go to the start page everytime.

wow.. I am loving this Wii browser. It runs videos and youtube better than my old laptop. It also is nice to watch youtube on the television. Just watched Final Fantasy VII last order.. real nice.

Just managed to freeze it. The whole Wii just froze, so I had to manually shut it down and power it back on.

I just did the same - first time the Wii has ever frozen on me. Even the remote's power switch didn't work. I ws just about to stop browsing and I went back the start page. I wanted to check my favorites one more time so I clicked on that, they popped up briefly, then it jumped back to the start page and froze.

Surfing CAG worked fine, though. However, the low res of this thing is already making my eyes hurt. I have to zoom in to see anything, then need to scroll sideways. Plus everything is WAY fuzzier than I can stand - but watching videos is OK. They really need to make the d-pad do scrolling too. I don't see why not, it could work in addition to the B button.

I tried to watch the CAGcast and it said "unsupported audio/video file MPEG" or something to that effect. But then it showed a white screen with a bunch of Chinese characters scattered all over it - very amusing. I assume this was just the raw binary of the MPEG file. I just hit back to get out of it.

I also had to turn off the auto-completion helper in the text entry. When I logged into CAG it kept trying to change my login to iodine or something .

But all-in-all, a very nice addition to the Wii. I forgot about wiicade. I'll have to bookmark that for the kids.

Oops! I did it again.

One improvement I'd like to see is smoother scrolling. I have a hard time sometimes getting the screen EXACTLY where I want it when scrolling around. It's kind of herky-jerky (not because of performance issues, but rather because it goes from one speed to the next highest speed very sharply, instead of being a seamless transition of speeds).

Which is exactly why I want D-pad scrolling. With the B button you have to position your pointer in the right place to get the right speed/direction. I just want to click up, down, left, or right with the D-pad.

BTW, I also have the black border around the top and sides. I'm running it 480p widescreen.

Haven't been able to download anything just yet. So I doubt unless we start seeing sites offering Wii-compatible downloads, it's not going to happen just yet. It'd be nice to compile a list of sites that allow the streaming of videos over the Wii like YouTube.

That's exactly what's on my TV. A thin black border. Its weird because when I bring up the keyboard, it takes up the entire screen, but the browser itself has the black border. I'm not even running in widescreen too, so it looks oddly condensed.

We really just need a list of sites that are Wii friendly period. I'd love to find some IM services that can be used via Wii. I tried MSN Web Messenger and AIM Express with no success.

Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I was hoping for some light Internet Channel music. With all the wonderful music the Wii plays, I just want more. Browsing the net seems so much more boring without the music when compared to shopping via the Shop Channel, or even checking the weather with the Forecast Channel.

Good morning, early CAGs! The channel's pretty cool, I just wish I could read stuff when zoomed out (only running standard def, so I can sometimes just see some blur with small but legible headlines).

Availability

The release of the final version of the Opera browser for Wii is currently scheduled for late March 2007. Opera for Wii will remain a free download until June 30, 2007. I'm sorry, but this browser SUCKS!

If you scale out (default), it's a blurry unreadable mess.

And if you zoom in with 2 button, it's zoomed way the heck in.

I've been using browsers on my main tvs for years now. And it's always been clear as a bell (even on my old analog JVC set with components). This is a joke. If I set my HTPC to 640*480, Firefox renders the entire page correctly and it's clear as a bell. Why Opera felt the need to render the page at a much higher resolution (that Wii can't display) and then downscale to 640*480 is beyond retarded. Pages work at 640. Yes they need vertical scrolling more often, but if Firefox can make it so you don't need horizontal scrolling, so should Opera. My dream of a quit/lower energy home theater web browser for checking quick scores is dead. This browser SUCKS! ANd only a fanboy would defend this thing (or someone who's never seen 640*480 browsing be crystal clear (displaying the whole page.))

For those of you who have downloaded the browser, I have a few questions for you.

How good is it for streaming stuff? On Youtube, do you have to let it buffer for a while(on my PC I have to let the red part get far enough along so the video won't catch it, if that makes any sense to you) or can you just hit play and off it goes? Does this depend on the type of internet connection you have? Also, can you stream music from something like myspace or listen to radio stations?

Is there any way to have a history, bookmarks, or favorites so you don't have to type in URLs all the time?

The browser sounds great, I'll probably use it as much or more than my PC so that I won't tie up the PC and I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii runs faster and smoother than my PoS.

What I wish was diffrent/what I hate
I can see the large white banner at the bottom being a issue with burn in on some TVs. They should auto hide that.

KB support, please let me use my bluetooth KB!

If there is a address bar that you can easily navigate to and put in a new address I missed it and it needs to be added.

Opera is lovely with tabbed browsing/hell the PSP even has it so Wii should too.

We need way more managment options. I am wondering about cookie handling, clearing history, ect. I want some more options. Again atleast as much as the Wii.

Let us download to our SD card and let us do things with our downloads, like play them in browser.

The big one= Make it full screen!!!!!! I couldnt believe when I seen that it wasnt full screen.

What I like
Its free
Its early still, they can add way more come March
Its fast (faster than PSP and PS3)

Knew this was coming and after taking forever to download the forecast channel, I was smart and downloaded this BEFORE work to avoid the server slam. I still had trouble, which finally motivated me to go into my wireless router settings and change the channel to 1 (it had defaulted to 6 when I set it up). That did wonders. I can't believe how fast the forecast channel and the shop load now. Zoom zoom zoom. I suppose my laptop and DS connection will see a benefit now as well.

Anyway, after fixing the router, it took less than 5 mins to download Opera. I only had time to play with it for five minutes, and like a tool I just went to Wii.com because it was the only site I could think of. Watched a couple videos and they look great. I think that will be this thing's killer app: Great way to watch YouTube and other videos on your TV with friends and family.

I really like how intuitive it is to use the + and - to zoom. Text entry is surprisingly easy, but my first preference would be for them to enable a bluetooth keyboard option. That alone would expand the browser's functionality immensely.

A while back some folks were talking about how it would be possible, even relatively easy, for the Wii to use a 720p or 1080i resolution in for the menus, even if it would be more difficult (but also not impossible) to use that resolution in games. I would love to see them add that down the road, if only to make browsing easier on the eyes.

Also, how are you guys getting Youtube to work? I'm finding that embedded videos seemingly play fine, but using YouTube's search doesn't (gives a javascript error).

Its weird, because last night, right as the browser got released, YouTube was working perfectly fine. Now all I see are those darn javascript/flash errors and I can't watch anything unless it's embedded.

Maybe YouTube changed something? Don't know.

Yeah I have been messing with it... checking out some Flash Games.

Flow does not work, was hoping it would. Check out this flash software, Musicology, its sort of a jukebox that just connects through various music files depending on your mood. Pretty cool.

There are a few things I hope they fix... one main thing is the resolution, for some reason it seems too zoomed out. Hard to read with out zooming in which is werid because it should be ok.

Also adding tabs would be cool. The toolbar should be smaller or be able to hide. The ablity to map buttons or add more features. Zooming in by dragging a marque box around somethign would be cool. Scrolling using the dpad too.

Watched a South Park episode on Google Video, and it was amazingly clear on a standard def TV. I wouldn't mind watching them on a regular basis, as long as they give the option to hide the bar on the bottom.

Little late to the thread, but I dl'ed the browser last night, and was surprised at how fast it was. (I thought it'd be slower...and I wasn't on a good wireless connection.)

Haven't searched the thread, but is there/has there been an announced compatible keyboard? Because that's all that is keeping me from using the Wii browser on a regular basis.

Adult Swim Fix refuses to play and calls the Wii a Mac.

Adult Swim fix uses Windows Media, which is probably not supported on Wii.
It works fine on my Mac (with Flip4Mac installed) ironically enough.

Looks like Youtube broke something somewhere along the lines in regards to the Wii:

http://gonintendo.com/?p=10850

From the Opera forums (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=167137)…
The Opera browser on Wii (http://gonintendo.com/?p=10850#) does support playback of movies (http://gonintendo.com/?p=10850#) on Youtube. Youtube seems to have broken something tonight, however, blocking Wii users. We will investigate and contact them about it.

I was fairly impressed with www.wiicade.com (http://www.wiicade.com)

All of the games were made to fit a standard TV, so the games are naturally fullscreen with no zooming needed. All of the other flash games I've played windowed and don't really look too good.

There's a trick to that, my friend.

To maximize any game just view the .swf file, not the .html file.

By nature, Flash movies will fill the screen. The HTML file is what puts the size limits on it.

So if you want, say, fullscreen Nanaca Crash go to langliet.org/nanca-crash.SWF (not .htm).

Should work with 90% of Flash files and 99% of Flash files work fine in thier swf version.

i think u might have to load the video up before u can mess around with what part of the vid u want to watch. When i went to full screen with 25% of the vid loaded, it suddenly stopped at the 25% mark.

Agreed - I have to zoom in at least one level to read just about anything. And I want to use the D-pad to roam!

I had no problems with Youtube in the middle of the day today - showed my kids a bunch of Mario things (watched the one where the guy beats SMB in 5 minutes - man, I've never seen anything past the first world before ;)).

Wiicade, however, gave us all kinds of problems. Last night I was able to play several games (though several others just loaded to blank screens and did nothing - had to go back and pick different ones). Today they loaded but they were squished into the upper 1/4 of the screen, yet stretched ALL the way across my widescreen display. Made them damn near unplayable. WTF? Every other page I looked at viewed fine, except that when I went back to my home page my background GIF had disappeared. So there was some flakiness going on with Opera. I haven't had time to restart it and check again. I'm sure it will clear up (as it all worked last night no problem).

If they make it so the giant menu buttons at the bottom sink out of view and only come up when you move your cursor down that far (similar to how you can set your tool bar in Windows to do), then it'll be perfect.

Here is a list of features they should add...

1. ToolBar - Ability to Hide and shrink it. Also having the html input there so you don't have to go to the home page. Little options like changing the color could be nice and rearranging them ahla the Wii Menu system.

2. D-Pad function - I would like the option to scroll with the D-Pad. Pretty simple it can get silly pointing it around to move.

3. Cursor - Chaning the size and shape would be great especially for certain flash games.

4. Zoom - Zooming in even more or making a box around an area to zoom in on that one area.

5. Resoultion - I have a 52" tv and it is so tiny to see. The browswer just needs more settings period.

6. Tabs - Having more than one window open to switch back and forth.

Wherever the hand cursor is located when you hit the "+" button, will zoom the screen in that general area.

YouTube has been working fine for me, as well as WiiArcade/WiiCade. Playing flash games is a blast, but I wish the creator of vNES would let us go to his site using the Wii. :D
