My wife is pregnant with our third child (who will be a boy), and we are trying to decide on a name. We have it down to two choices, so I thought I would put up a poll.
William Bryant Thomas
(Family Names)
Dante Christian Thomas
(Original Names)

I chose WBT because Dante makes me think of the Divine Comedy, which in turn makes me think of the devil.

The only Dante I knew in High School was an annoying asshole. Don't name your kid after an annoying asshole.

Which is great cause his middle name is Christian!
The Demonic Christian boy.

I voted for WBT. The Dante one just sounds like you're trying to make him sound cool. Like naming him Cloud, or well, Dante.
William Bryant Thomas is a good strong name.

How does the Divine Comedy make you think of the devil? The Divine Comedy discusses Dante's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven.

Dante is just stupid, its like naming your kid Janus....
It sounds cool, but really it makes you a douche.

True, but it starts in Hell with Inferno, which is also the most famous of the three, and Hell makes me think of the Devil.

I vote Dante, if only for the fact that I really, really wouldn't want to be named "William".
On a related note, my mom originally wanted to name me Mario (as in the hockey player). Fortunately, my grandparents were able to convince her otherwise.

Yes, Crotch is a much better name. The Crotch.
Mario is too common.

David Brent Thomas. He'd have the same initials as the band Drive By Truckers, and he'd be named after everyone's favorite office manager.

Dante, just because I'm pretty sick of people having the same name...I mean, seriously, no offense, but how many fucking Williams are there?
Just as many fucking Saras...and I bet quite a few williams happen to actually be physically fucking saras right now this second...which in turn makes it even freakier..because it's not even adjectives anymore..it's just that there's so many williams and so many saras that it's inevitable for saras to meet williams and williams to meet saras..and the absolute infinity of the number indicate that in ALL probability, there is a william having sex with a sara RIGHT NOW
Besides, someone said it here, quite a few of us will KNOW what the name Dante means something other than an Italian poem. How is the first choice "family" names if so many million people and other families have them, besides your family? 100 years from now, there will be quite a few more dante, but not as many dante thomases..it'll be unique to your family tree
And now that I think of it..Dante Thomas sounds pretty cool. Dante and get rid of the second name, that's my vote!

I voted for Dante, because I'm not into "family names." Personally, it would creep me out if I were named after a dead relative.
But then again, I named my son "Lennon Winter." We couldn't come up with any boy names that didn't sound overused, too weird or trite and Lennon popped into my head as a joke. It beat out my original suggestion of Bucephalus, so I probably shouldn't be consulted for such matters...

Dante. That's one of my favorite names for a boy, and also as said before the play on Dante Christian is wonderful. Seriously. :applause: That's brilliant, and I'm gonna go write that down somewhere. ;)
Personally I don't think of the Clerks Dante, I think of the other Dante...

So, the name isn't "not cool", just because of Clerks' Dante. You got to take into account all the well-known Dante's...
