okay guys, go for it, I've been on the fence about this game for a while, and as fun as it looks (and it DOES look like fun) I need to know if the controls are good and if theres enough replay value to justify buying it at msrp :)

I've enjoyed that they give you the option to switch from old style 'hit the button to set your power, then hit your button to set the accuracy' deal, or for the obvious 'swing like it's really a golf club'. The controls were pretty good for swinging (I seem to have a knack at hitting the ball to the left when I want it to go straight though, so it may take some adjusting to), easy to get used to, but on the whole I preferred to switch to the old button style. That could be because I've been doing yard work all week and my arms already ached, so the swinging a golf club didn't help.

But yeah, if you absolutely hate swinging the wiimote as a golf club, it's not unplayable at least, you can just switch to old style. This made me happy, because I was really concerned about disliking it the way I disliked Wii Sports golf.

I may be biased though because I played Albatross 18 for a while too, so I'm already familiar with some of the maps and layouts and whatnot.

So far there seems like it's going to take a good amount of time to work though, it seems like you can play Pangya Festa (basically story mode) for every character differently, and I only have three characters unlocked out of something like 10, and new stuff seems to be getting unlocked when I think I've beaten it, so it doesn't seem like entirely short story modes either. Then there's match play and stroke play on top of that.

I know somebody who really, really enjoyed Wii Golf, so I'm curious how the controls compare. Also, is the game silly (I'm not at all familiar with the series)? I think he'd prefer a more realistic golfing game, but he probably likes any golf game.

I'd love to know the same things...

How similar is it to a Hot Shots? Are there unlockable outfits and the like?

I love Wii Golfing except for the short putt controls--is the short putting different on this game?

Like said here...I play Albatross 18 and the game is the same.

Very, very similar to Hot Shots. Unlockable outfits you have to buy with Pang (the game currency, which you earn by winning matches), new things that come in the shop all the time, new items that you can use to help you with matches (things like a item that turns the wind off for one shot, or give you extra curve power, or an expensive item that lets you redo a shot that you hit OB, etc), new hair colors, new clothes, accessories, new clubs, new balls, and of course, new players to play with. There's also a rank system, you start as a Rookie, and move up to Beginner and whatnot, although I haven't really figured out the reason for those yet on this version.

I know you don't like the swinging-wiimote-like-golf-club thing, but can you compare those controls with Wii Golf? It's hard for me to compare it to Wii Sports because I really didn't play a lot of it-- I'll try to go back and try out Wii Sports again later this evening (If the weather channel will ever bloody finish downloading) and see how it compares. FWIW, though, it is a bit more silly and cartoony, again, like Hot Shots golf, it's no tiger woods, but it's still got some realistic bits to it.

It does play nearly identical to the downloadable version, so it's worth downloading to check out that way if you're concerned about it being worth $50. It's hard for me to say whether it was or not-- I paid $5, after using some ready to expire best buy vouchers.

Full game-- Super Swing Golf is actually basically a port from a PC game. Golf MMO type thing. Free download. You can buy items in the game on the PC, for real cash, which I never got into. I won't pay $5 for online golf balls that run out. Rather pay $50 and have everything.

www.albatross18.com download it here, and have a go. :)

No.

There is a PC version. I've been playing it recently and it is great. I'm worried to open my copy for the Wii because I feel the lack of inclusion of online mode will turn me off.

Google 'Albatross 18 season 2' to find it.

Oh, ok. Thanks guys. If you get a chance try out the Wii sports Golf and give us some impressions between the 2. I'm sure the Super Swing will be better but I would like to know what you think. :D

The only thing I'm not really digging is that the golf swing portion doesn't feel as natural as Wii Golf. I'll study the mechanics of it better over the xmas holiday, but with WiiGolf, you press a button, swing, and go. With this, I go into my back swing, PAUSE my swing, press A then continue the swing. I hope there's a way to alter this because it's REALLY awkward and all my through motion in swinging is ruined by having to stop my shot mid swing to press A each time. It can be overcome, I'm sure for me, but it's a real bummer if this is the only way to play. I'd almost warrant switching back over to the regular button press control style if this is it. Either way, I'll keep it because a good HSG style game is fun with friends, no matter how awkward the controls are.

-EDIT I read around some on this, and there's some extra added motions you have to go through before you actually do your swing thing.

What the deal is, is that you first set your power of your shot by fidgeting your arm around till you find a power level you're comfortable with. The lower your arm back down, and take your shot, as you're expected to in a golf game.

A few people had advised on using the tutorial when you purchase the game, as it apparently does an excellent job of explaining the concept of shooting a lot better than the ingame "DO THIS!!!" alerts/pictures do.

I'll try it again when I get home, and hopefully if this is true, it'll be a lot more manageable.
The biggest problem I had with WiiGolf is that I have no heft or resistance against swinging, so all my shots were hooking or slicing when they shouldn't have. Some wind resistance and the weight of a club go a long way in my brain telling my hands how to swing when I'm swinging a real club. Removing that element in the system described in SSGolf is an excellent move on their part. In this way, they're paring down the point of swinging down more to aim and followthrough

great explanation, let us know when you get a better feel for the controls :)

Okay, after piddling with it some more last night, I'm okay with it. It's not quite what I'd read, but at least it will feel more useable...

Basically, set your shot with your backswing, press A, then do your followthrough while holding A. It's basically the same as my complaint, but to watch the tutorial explain it, you don't have to feel as rushed in making your shots as you do in normal golf.

When I swing a club, my backswing and followthrough are all one fluid motion, and in this game, you have to break it up into two separate motions. Backswing, press A, followthrough.

My aim ain't so hot, but that'll come more from needing to figure out where the controller needs to rotate to when I do my followthrough swing. As it is now, most of my shots hook to right.

Putting is about the only mystery left, because I've tried simple taps when you're like a foot from the cup, and it'll only move an inch or less with something that's meant to be a 1yd putt.

All-in-all, someone's enjoyment of the game's going to depend on their ability to learn the games controls and be able to separate that from playing real golf. I manage okay between real golf and Hot Shots, so this isn't THAT much different, even though we have a VERY unique control scheme now...

Someone looking for a bit more authenticity would probably be best waiting for Tiger Woods when it comes out... Me? I just like the SDF golf games. I'm happy.

I absoultely love this game. This is probably the most addictive game I have played yet on the Wii. I keep wanting to go back and hit some more golf balls. The controls are absolutely perfect. I was checking out Game Informer and they had a review up. They liked it also.

Just download Albatross18 and play it for a couple hours. If you like it, you'll like SSG--it's practically the same game. It's also very similar to Hot Shots Golf... it's like that game, only with a cutesy Japanese angle, with young girls and magical golf clubs.

The putting is such that, if you play enough, you can easily make any putt below 20y. Putting isn't the same as swinging irons/woods in SSG--you don't have to swing the club in any special way when you putt. You just choose putt strength by tilting the remote back like the handle of a putter, lock it in with (A), then give the remote enough motion to trip the motion sensor.

Also, to win in the later matches, you almost HAVE to use special shots and other related techniques. In order to win by a good margin, you'll have to completely abuse the game's mechanics.

So in that respect, it has a lot in common with a fighting game, and less in common with a traditional golf sports game.

Wii Sports Golf is a golf minigame with loose rules and play control. SSG is a golf arcade game with concrete rules and predictable play control.

I've enjoyed SSG enough to finish every match in all the modes. It's not a perfect game, but in some ways, it's a lot more enjoyable than Albatross18. To me, it's a buy, not a rent, because you won't get to the really fun stuff in a rental.

I bought this game, and both my wife and I like it a lot, but we can't figure out how to select different characters. When we golf together we both play as Scout, because that's who I picked the first time I booted up the game. My wife couldn't even find an option to play as the girl. We also can't seem to figure out how to make our own profiles. It's just "Player 1" and "Player 2", and I don't think it's keeping track of our best scores, which is a bummer because we want to track our progress. Can somebody point me in the right direction here? Any help would be appreciated.
