View Full Version : What should I buy to connect my Wii to internet?

Ok I know my three choices. The USB Wifi Adaptor, a router, or a USB ethernet adaptor. Let me explain my situation, I am a college student, and well I live in a dorm for about 7-8 months out of the year. So at school we get one little internet jack (where I put in a ethernet cable and then I can connect one thing to the internet). Ok so I have a Wii, DS and a PC, and I would like the Wii and need the PC to be connected to the internet.
Ok so now if I was to get a router, it would have to have both wired and wireless (because I want my PC wired for speeds), but I been leaning towards this option because my PC isn't on 24/7, but it has to be under $60 because I am not spending an arm and a leg for something I really don't need. I probably don't want the USB Wifi Adaptor just because I am afraid it might not work and it is $40, I could get a router for that much. The ethernet adaptor would be cool, but well I would have to switch the connection to use it which might be annoying, but it would be the cheapest.
So what do you suggest I do?
thanks

All Wireless routers have wired ports.
I bought a fine one from Fry's for $19.99, it's $29.99 on the site, though:

You may want to read your school policy to find out if you are allowed to have a router/switch/hub in your dorm. I know that some schools frown at that.
Also, all you really need is a switch or a hub since you will be using the school's router. It may be difficult to find a switch with an access point, so just get a wireless router w/ switch if you decide to go that route.
The Wii LAN adapter (http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&langId=-1¤cy=USD&ignoreCrumbs=N&crumb1=&crumb1Ignore=&crumb2=%253CA%2BHREF%253D%2522javascript%253APassO n%2528%2527X%2527%252C%2B%2527ChooseView%2527%252C %2527%2527%252C%2B%2527%2527%2529%253B%2522%253EWi i%253C%252FA%253E&crumb2Ignore=&crumb3=%253CA%2BHREF%253D%2522javascript%253APassO n%2528%2527C%2527%252C%2B%2527CategoryDisplay%2527 %252C%252762707%2527%252C%2B%2527N%2527%2529%253B% 2522%253EParts%2B%2526%2BAccessories%253C%252FA%25 3E&crumb3Ignore=&translateFrom=%C8%C9%C7&translateTo=EEC&usrSearchText=&searchText=&selSrchType=&page=&view=&productId=117712&categoryId=62707&lastAction=ProductDisplay&orderTotal=null)is $25, so you can always get that and find a FAR switch to plug it in to.

I wonder why they wouldn't allow hubs or routers?
Anyways, get some kind of Wireless router. I'd suggest a G. You can get them pretty cheap, and if you ever want to stream hefty files (say a video) you need not worry.

Thats what I recently bought (I actually got the next model up with the speed and range boost because they were on sale for the same price as the base model) and it works awesome. I have our laptop, my wii, my xbox360, etc all attached "wirelessly". And our two PC's are wired directly of the router.
It's a sweet setup that works very well.
One suggestion: If you're in a dorm, especially (or apartment building), make sure to turn on the security feature so no one can (or, rather, can't easily) piggyback on your wireless signal.

some colleges frown greatly upon routers because of the way other users can share your connection (they can't monitor it) so when illegal usage occurs, they can't police it as well (in other words, they just nail to the wall the person the connection is registered to)

I've heard that some wireless routers won't "play nice" with the DS and Wii. That said, I'd recommend checking out Nintendo's site before buying one. They have a list of supported/recommended routers.

I can vouch for the USB adapter. It should be 34.99, not 39.99. Works perfectly for my DS and Wii. All you do is put it in a USB port of your PC, install the software from the included CD, download an update from nintendo.com and voila.. works like a charm, every time.
