I forgot to post this a few days ago when it happened:

I tried logging into my account and it wouldn't let me, before I was able to log in, i had to take the ebay fee circumvention quiz.

It's basically a bunch of stupid ass questions about all things fee circumvention. Stuff like only charging actual shipping charges, selling outside of ebay, etc. There was one thing that I actually didn't know about though.

I listed a lot of VHS tapes a while back. I had about 300 or so and I wanted to sell them in lots. So, I made a BIN listing where I let the buyers pick out 30 of the tapes from the list that I had typed up. This way, I could give the buyer a choice of what movies they wanted to buy. Once the item sold, I would simply change the list of available titles and relist it.

It was pulled almost immediately, and I had to take that stupid ass quiz.

Apparently, it is against ebay policy to sell a "pick em" lot. They say that it circumvents fees. How? I just don't understand. Can someone please shed some light on this stupid policy and what fee circumvention had to do with it?

Oh, and if you've taken the quiz, how did you do? I got 11/12.

I have not had to take that quiz, but it's pretty obvious how that listing circumvents fees:

- One "300 item pickem" listing means you only pay ebay one listing fee and one FVF. (totaling 10 listing fees and 10 FVF, if you are going by 30 picks per listing)

versus

- 300 BIN listings which would rake in 300 listing fees for ebay, as well as 300 FVF. (don't forget ebay-checkout's...ahem, I mean, paypal's cut!)

Can you see why ebay prefers the latter? :)

If I was selling items one at a time you'd be correct, but I'm not selling one item at a time. Compare my listing to 10 separate listings selling 30 movies each...

My Listing:

10 Insertion Fees + 10 FVF + 10 Paypal fees

10 SEPARATE LOTS

10 Insertion Fees + 10 FVF + 10 Paypal fees

They get the same amount in fees either way. PLUS, the pick-em lot is much more likely to sell since people can take into account their own taste, and not just that of the seller.

Anyway, I just decided to not sell them on ebay at all. Now they don't get any $$$, serves em right for being idiots.

I knew about the pick em thing. It's even against the rules to sell a shirt or pair of shoes and let the winner pick their size (or color) after the auction. eBay wants you to make seperate listings for all of the sizes you have in stock.

In some cases I could see a shady seller fucking a buyer with a listing like that. "Congratulations on winning my auction! Unfortunately Gears of War and Zelda: TP have been chosen by other winners so you will be receiving Madden 2005 by default!"

Never had to take the quiz.
