View Full Version : PSA: Having Wii internet problems (updates/shop)? Change your router channel.

I know this has been mentioned in multiple other threads, but it's a widespread issue that actually has a solution that works well. If you are a Wii owner with these problems, you shouldn't be putting up with it anymore.

If you are experiencing:
-The progress bar freezing while performing a system update
-Tons of errors while trying to connect to the Wii shop channel
-A LONG wait to connect to the Wii Shop channel
-Any other Wifi internet related problems

Go into the settings for your wireless router, and change the channel from 6 to either 1 or 11. This is usually done from your computer, and has nothing to do with the Wii settings.

Before, I was experiencing all of the aforementioned problems. I could never connect to the shop channel, and if I somehow miraculously did, it would take minutes for it to load each page.

After I changed my wireless channel, everything worked perfectly and instantaneously. Suddenly, the Wii worked exactly as I expected it to.

You owe it to yourself to do this.

Not a bad idea to make a post out of it so the question doesn't need to be asked all the time.

The only question is, should the ending of the post be "The More You Know" or "Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!"

Yeah, this is posted in almost every Wii problem thread, but it does need it's own thread right now. This seems to be the main internet-related Wii problem. It definitely fixes any slow update and Wii Shop problems.

Try:

Start bar -> Run...

Type: "cmd" (no quotes) and press Enter
Type: "ipconfig" (no quotes) and press Enter

Take the ip adress from "Default Gateway", and put it into the Address Bar of your favorite web browser, and press enter.

I changed my channel to 11 a couple of weeks ago and it worked wonders.

I chaneged my channel to 11 (it was on 6 before), it doesn't go any faster but it seems to have a smoother connection when I try to connect. I highly reccomend trying this just to try it.

what is the error code 52030 mean...i have my linksys wireless wrt54gs router set to channel 11, turned the firewall off in the linksys setup...dhcp is enabled...please tell me the error code is from nintendo servers getting crushed due to the opera browser dl. I would hate to have to configure it manually. I have had no problems with wireless setups for my notebook, ds, 360 and psp

any help with my question on what that code meansTry changing the channel to 1 (some people only got it working well with one or the other for some reason). Or manually assign the IP address. They don't specifically identify steps for each error code, but here's the general troubleshooting:

This worked wonders for me. Changed the channel to 1 and now my Wii is flying. Wonder if it will have the same effect on my wireless laptop and DS connections.

Dunno if I can help you but I just bought that router last night. Set it up exactly like it says then when it says what internet you have just click next and don't mess with it. Then it'll ask what kind of security you want or something and pick WEP either 64 or 128 either one is fine 128 I guess just makes the jumbled code longer. Make your password thing and jumble it then write down the jumbled thing and go to setup your wii and DS and type that jumbled code in when it asks for a code. hope that helps.

thanks for the help, I already had the router setup wirelessly with the 360, psp, and ds...I just don't get why it didn't work. I will try to switch it to channel 1 when i get home

Easy directions for anyone using the Linksys WRT54G who has no idea how to change channels:

http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=201&p_created=1084206430&p_sid=wfmLjypi&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPT EmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NCZw X3Byb2RzPTEsMjAsNjk1JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0zLjY5NSZwX2 N2PSZwX3NjZl9sYW5nPTEmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4 dD1jaGFubmVscw**&p_li=&p_topview=1

That did fix the minor problems I was having-- it isn't super faster, but no more hangs on system updates as far as I've seen.

I wonder if that would let you latch onto a different channel, in lieu of a router.

My problem is I can't for the life of me remember my username or password to get into my settings to change the channel on my router. I type in the 192 address and that box requesting my username and pw comes up, I've tried everything but no dice. :(

Any way around this?

Yeah, tried it. I'm pretty sure my friend changed the password when we set it up but neither he nor I can remember what it might be. Grrrrrr.

if you can't remember it, you can reset it...i have a linksys and had forgot how it was...I called tech support and he walked me thru it. You will need to reset the wireless setup though.

If you have a wireless router I would strongly recommend that you change the default password. It will help keep your neighbors off of your wireless signal and making changes.
Usually to reset the router there is a reset button that you can press with a paper clip or a pen, you just need to hold it in until you see all the lights come on, then release it. Default for all Linksys routers is Admin for username and blank for the password.

If you have a D-link, I'm pretty sure this is the correct default username password combo:

Username - admin
Password - password or leave blank

I'm pretty sure that's what worked for me.....

Just changed the channel today to 11, and your right, it makes a huge difference! Of course, it was a pain to deal with the router issues after resetting it, but it got worked out in the end :)

what if you arent using a wireless router? im using the DS wifi Dongle, and sometimes my wii wont connect to the wireless dongle. Itll give me a error code, and most likely ill have to reinstall the program and mess with alot of random stuff to get it to work, its really annoying. heard anything on this? any tips?
