I'm starting this topic in hopes that all political discussion can go here, so that there are not multiple redundant topics on the main page's message list, causing people to miss deals/trades. Subjects may include, but are not limited to: the election, war in Iraq, Farenheit 9/11, abortion, gay marriage, etc. I propose that from now on extra topics that belong here get either merged or locked should the need arise.

On usage: I have no doubt that flamewars will erupt frequently, but try to keep the tone civil. It's just an internet disagreement and you're not likely to change anyone's mind, so don't take it too personally.

DaPhatty Edit: Ok, so you wanted one thread for this and now you have it. Please talk about anything and everything political here. Think of it as a different flavor of the OTTOTT thread. I won't be spending much time policing these conversations so it's up to you guys to set the trend. If I see another political thread, I will point them this way if someone else hasn't already done so. But if they choose to keep the conversation there, so be it.

Current Republican worldview of Black & White, Good & Evil, lack of Gray, scares me.

News at 11.

Politics at this level isn't supposed to be fun. No interns, afterall. Nor any crooked dealings for profit at the expense of the American people.

Ok, how bout this one. It seems to me that the staunch Bush supporters ignore things like CONTEXT when they are defining things.

For instance:

"We are good, they are evil." What makes them "evil"? Because they don't agree with our worldview? Because they use crude tactics (you try warring against the world's foremost military power with 100 people, and see how you'd do it)?

I'm not saying that I agree in any way with terrorists, or that terrorism is necessary, but I AM saying that we should try to properly understand our enemies to effectively address the problem.

These people grow up in a very rigid atmosphere, in countries that are socially, economically, and politically oppressive. An area of the world replete with strife and hardship, originating within and without.

In steps the US, a place of the rich and powerful, where even our poor stack above many of their villages. We muck around with their governments and daily lives all the time (often at the behest of our generous friends the I$raeli$). Think of how happy you'd be if some foreign nation, who represents extravagance in the face of your spartan existance, came in and ousted your government. Imagine further that the ruler this foreign power installed stole billions of dollars from the national treasury only to escape and hide out in the same country who placed him in power. Imagine then that this foreign power refused to turn him over to you so that you can exact justice upon the oppressive theif. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

This exact scenario happened in Iran, and led to the Iran Hostage Crisis. Our CIA installed a Shah who screwed over his people, and fled under the auspices of "health reasons" to "visit" doctors in the US. We would not give the Shah over to the Iranian people, leading to a 444 day hostage scenario and animosity between our two countries until this day. If you know anyone who lived in Iran during the Shah's reign, I'd encourage you to talk to them at length about this particular issue. I think you'll find it enlightening.

In short, the US tends to bring these problems upon themselves. We dick around in other people's business and expect to remain aloof and unscathed. But they are evil, of course, so things like 9/11 were destined to happen. Evil people do evil things, without any apparent reason or motivation. We do no wrong, because we are good. Or so say Bush-ites.
