View Full Version : Is throwing considered cheap in fighting games?

Back then I remember playing SF 2 how the person would block all day then for the last tip of their energy bar one would just go for a crouching short follwed to a throw. The reactions of the losing person in match would be like "that was shaq-fuing" cheap.

Depends on the game whether or not it feels "cheap." In something like VF4Evo, I find that it is a challenge to get good throws in (especially with the aikido chick and Goh) because turtling like your example in SF2 is much, much more difficult.

Throws are a part of actual real-life genuine fighting. How is that cheap?

Having a miniature napalm thrower up your sleeve, that's cheap.

You don't actually buy that chi story, do you?

Some games where the throws are very unbalanced, i.e. SSB - the original, it was considered very cheap with my friends. But usually no. It is usually not the most interesting or satisfying way to win/lose, but it's not cheap.

Throwing cheapness totally depends on the fighting system itself, as noted here. In most modern games post-SF2 there are throw counters, so I would generally say, no, they're not cheap. Same goes for blocking (guard breaks, meters, etc.).

Don't be a scrub! Play to win:

... or throwing is more than fair, because it is built into the game. Change your strategy and learn how to win.

Definately not. Throwing is a big part of fighting games and to some character it is an essential part of their offense. Characters like Zangief can't really survive in a game without throws, even if they are of the 360 variety.

I will say that throwing in SFII was rather cheap, since you could throw someone while they were in block-stun. But they changed that starting in SFAlpha, thus placing more skill and timing into the throwing game.

yea the super smash bros throw or the Dk throw where you would hold onto the other guy and then jump off and throw him and then jump on was cheap but I learned how to get out of that ;)

I dont think its cheap, its a move.

Throws have been toned down from the old SFII days. I remember in SFII a throw would do something massive like 20%-25% damage. In Japan, it was considered so unbalanced that if some players accidentally threw an opponent, they would apologize and allow their character to be thrown in retaliation.

Nowdays, throws aren't so gamebreaking so throw to your heart's content. Plus some characters these days have most of their special moves as throws, so it can be unavoidable.

It's difficult to isolate any one aspect of a fighting game as being "cheap." You can tell if someone is cleverly working in throws or trying to fake you out in order to get a throw in...or if they're just exploiting a weakness in the game. Old clunkers like Streetfighter II weren't as well designed (naturally) as their descendants; if somebody jumped at you with the right character, you had to guess blindly whether to try striking them or risk being thrown when they landed in front of you. That's just a limitation of the system. Such easy to exploit gaps in gameplay aren't nearly as prevalent in current fighters, and so I would say throws aren't cheap in most modern titles.

Darn. Psyclerk got it in first. And more succinctly to boot. Curse you fast-typing blunt types.

Nope, and if you start getting grabed alot, games now have grab reversals to get out of it, or be more offensive.

You know what is cheap though, Gill in SF III 3rd Strike.

I in SF 2 and a few other games I always thought fire balls were more cheap then throws. I mean every character could thow but not everyone could shoot a fire ball. At least with a throw you have to have the balls to rush the enemy. With a fire ball you run away and pop them off one after another from a distance.

not cheating the best way to look at it in a negative light is say it is a loop hole but it is in a game and I say it is perfectly okay.
