I have a cable modem that connects to my PC. I just got a laptop(for Christmas, hooray it doesn't suck!) and I tried putting the cable into my laptop instead of the PC. The laptop won't connect to the internet. How do I fix this?
Also, when my dad gave me it he gave me a wire that the salesman said was necessary to do wired internet. The cord has an end that looks to plug into a phone jack and the other end is small, it looks like it could fit into where you charge a cell phone. I couldn't figure out what to plug it into so I just used the ethernet cable.
In case it matters, I have Windows 2000 Professional.

If you have a camera take a picture of your setup.

I don't have a camera but I'll try my best to describe it to you.
I have the cable going into my cable modem. The modem has a CAT-5e cord going into the back of my PC. I can get on the internet fine with the PC. When I take the CAT-5e cord out of the PC and put it into the laptop, it detects the it but I can't get on the internet.

Try going to Control Panel -> Network Connection. Then double click the icon there for your ethernet card. Go to the last tab and check if you're getting an ip address. It should be the same one as your PC.
If there's no ip (with the cat5 still in the laptop) go to Start -> Run. Type in "cmd" or "command" without the quotes. On the command line type in "ipconfig /renew" again without the quotes. If that still doesn't get you an ip, hopefully someone else will have a better solution as I can't think of anything right now.

Edit: Nevermind, I probably just do the same thing! I'm such an idiot.
Edit #2: Wow, I feel like a total moron now. All it took was me unplugging the modem and CAT5, waiting a minute, and hooking it all back up to the laptop. It works fine now. Thanks for all the help and sorry about wasting your time on something so simple.
