View Full Version : The new Kirby game is not so good, IMO.

WTF is going on in that game? Maybe I haven't given it a fair shot sonce I bought Yoshi's Island DS on the same day but the new Kirby game is horrible so far, IMO. It feels like a random SNES rom that I'd play for 30 seconds and never again. I'll spend another three shit sessions or so with it to give it a chance but I might be sending this one to eBay...

I don't know. This is actually the first Kirby game I've ever played - I picked it up on a whim for $20 when it was on sale at Circuit City.

Well based on this game I'm not missing much at all. Name a good Kirby game and I'll go play it.

The first one for the NES was awesome, IMO. But, then again, I was like 10, so it's relevance to today might be a tad skewed.

Kirby's Dream Course - SNES and the other Kirby game for the DS.

Kirby Superstar (SNES), Kirby Canvas Curse (DS), and Kirby's Dream Course (SNES) are great. None of the other ones are all that exciting. I haven't played Squeak Squad, but the two platformers on GBA sucked.

Kirby SuperStar for the SNES. 2 Player Fun.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES) was solid

Very well said.
I have only played about 4 Kirby's but I love them all. The first DS Kirby game I have never heard a bad thing about. Kirby is a great 2D platformer.

Just like every Kirby game made in the last 5 years, I will check this one out when it falls into the bargain bin.

Yeah, not much changes in the Kirby games. That's ok by me as I tend to like the formula. They tend to be just quick and dirty platformers, not really hard or anything, but still fun in their own way. But, because they are all similar, if you don't like the formula, you'll be hard pressed to get into it I imagine.
I still say the best game in the series is the very first game, Kirby's Dream Land on the Gameboy. Followed closely by Kirby Canvas Curse, which breaks the mold a lot and is perhaps the best use of the DS's abilities I've seen yet.

The only thing I hate about it is the controls. I'm so used to B jumping and Y running/attacking that reversing it screws with me.

The two on the Gameboy and the NES one (Kirby's Dreamland 1, 2, Kirby's Adventure). Kirby 64 was also okay, although it looked horrible. (Haven't played Kirby 3 on the SNES, though it's probably good)
I haven't liked a Kirby game since those. IMO the gameplay in the GBA games is totally broken. You're too big on screen to plan ahead. There's too many enemies, and everything is just spastic. I loved the pacing and feel of the first three games. It's like they just threw crazy stuff at the screen on the GBA ones just because they could.
I'd love to hear from someone who also loved the first three but hates the later ones as to how they like Squeak Squad.
EDIT: BTW, I know one of the GBA ones was a remake of Kirby's Adventure...but I hated it too.

Ok, I love Kirby as much as the next guy, but I'm not going to crucify the OP for not liking the game. This is far from the best Kirby game, but the big criticism against it is that it's not very original. The best of the Kirby games is probably Kirby Super Star which is slated for release on the Virtual Console in 2007. If you don't like the mechanics of Kirby though, don't bother. Every Kirby platformer is pretty similar.

See I don't think so. Technically, if you describe the game, they'll sound the same. But the early Kirby games play completely different from the new ones IMO, and I hate the new ones.
I wish I owned Kirby 2, and I wish the DS could run it...

Having played every Kirby platformer besides the N64 one, I'll have to disagree with you on that. Besides the different powers and a few new moves here and there, I feel the core game play is essentially the same from Dream Land to Squeak Squad. There are certainly variations in the formula, but Kirby doesn't feel any less solid when I toss in my SNES copy of Super Star vs Squeak Squad/Amazing Mirror.

I really, really want to buy this game (couldn't buy it during the CC sale since I already spent my money on something else). I absolutely loved every Kirby (platformer) I played (although I missed out on a few). I don't care if it looks, plays like an SNES. I just like Kirby because it's fun.
I just don't see how the game can be disappointing, but we'll see when I get it.

I beat Squeak Squad last week and while it was fun while it lasted, it's disappointing in the fact that it's too easy and short. It's the same Kirby gameplay as any other Kirby game, but everything including the bosses felt too easy.

Kirby Tilt and Tumble was alright but it was too difficult to keep it in the exact right place

My favorite Kirby is the NES one that was remade for the GBA, Nightmare in Dreamland. I haven't tried any of the Kirby games on the DS yet... only because other games seem to make themselves cheaper or more anticipated. :)

Just started Squeak Squad last night. While not nearly as inspired as Canvass Curse, I love the game. Classic Kirby Gameplay with a little bit of sillyness of touch screens, some of the neat unlocakble things to play with could be fun. But, then again, if you don't like the previous games, you won't like this one I daresay.
In the end, it's at least more fun and engaging that Yoshi's Island DS was I think.
I think Nintendo has 8 year old Japenese kids making there 2d games now because they are stale and uneventful. The only exeption is Kirby Canvas Curse. Supermario was way way to easy and yoshi's island is just gay. It is not even close to being as good as the original Yoshi's Island. I would like to see some new creative minds work with Miyamoto and give him some purple weed.

You falsely criticize Nintendo for having "8 year old Japanese [sp] kids" making their games, and you then go on to call Yoshi's Island "gay," something an 8-year old would say. Well done.

Well, I finished Squeak Squad today. Fantastic game. I loved the little touch screen features, and the structure of the game was just a fun departure (if not radical) from the Kirby norm. I think I actually may go back and unlock everything. I love that you can get little things like changing Kirby's color in game and such. It's goofy, but a lot of fun.
Despite the OP's toptic, I'd say this is a must-buy for DS owners.

I just finished it yesterday and it's a great game (I actually got all the treasures as I went along, so there isn't much replay value for me). I wish it was longer, but I guess that's what I say about all games I like.
I've always liked Kirby and this is no exception, it's not too different from other Kirby's, but if it ain't broke don't fix it right?

I thought Squeak Squad was just way too short. It felt kinda like Yoshi's Island 2 did; like it was made by a good company trying to emulate something made by a different, slightly better one. Personally I think HAL has had their heads up their asses for the past year or so. Everything they do seems lackluster compared to their earlier efforts.
